Chapter 14 - THE THIRD PLAYER

We all froze.
Vanessa walked into the light. Gun raised. Aimed straight at me.
“Touching,” she said. “Simply touching. But I am not here for forgiveness. I am here for what I am owed.”
Silas stood up slowly.
“Vanessa. Step aside. This is over.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Over? It was never over. You were never the one in charge, Silas. You were just the tool. The angry, convenient fool who did all the hard work while I waited.”
I stared at her.
“You?” I said. “You are the one behind everything?”
Vanessa nodded.
“I found Silas in prison years ago. I fed him the lies. I gave him the information. I told him what he needed to hear so he would do exactly what I wanted. And then… I walked into Adrian’s life. Perfectly on schedule.”
“Why?” Clara asked. “What do you gain from all this?”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Everything. The fortune. The estate. The name. Once Adrian and Silas destroyed each other… I would step in. The survivor would be broken. Vulnerable. Mine to control.”
“And Emma?” I said, stepping forward slightly. “Why try to kill a baby?”
Vanessa’s eyes hardened.
“Because she was in the way. A child meant love. Protection. Distraction. She had to be removed so Adrian would have nothing left but me.”
Rage built inside me.
“You are insane.”
“I am practical,” Vanessa said. “And I am still holding the gun. Silas… drop the lighter. Clara… step away from Adrian. And Adrian… hand me the girl.”
“Never,” I said.
Vanessa cocked the hammer.
“Then someone dies. Start choosing who.”
Silas took a step toward her.
“Vanessa… put the gun down.”
“Stay back!” Vanessa shouted. She swung the weapon toward him.
In that split second… Clara moved.
She lunged. Knocked Vanessa’s arm upward.
A shot rang out.
The sound was deafening.
Silas stumbled back. Clutched his chest.
Clara caught him as he fell.
Vanessa stood staring. The gun still in her hand. Her face pale.
“I… I didn’t mean…”
“Run!” Clara screamed at me. “Take Emma! Run!”
I didn’t wait. I grabbed Emma. And I ran.
Behind me… shouting. Chaos. Another shot.
But I did not look back. I burst out of the mansion. Into the car. Drove away as fast as I could.
With my daughter safe in the back seat.
But Clara. And Silas.
May you like
And Vanessa.
I left them behind.
