Chapter 4: The Marriage He Planned
The sentence followed me long after the phone call ended.
“Isabelle… you need to know why he married you.””
I sat frozen in the hospital bed, staring at the wall across from me.
A blank white wall.
A blank future.
Everything I thought I knew about my life had cracks running through it.
Carter’s hand holding mine on our wedding day.
Carter promising he would protect me.
Carter whispering that he wanted a family with me.
Were any of those moments real?
Or had I just been the only person in the room who didn’t know I was acting in someone else’s plan?
My father noticed the change in my expression.
“Isabelle.””
I looked at him.
“Put her back on.””
He nodded.
My father lifted the phone.
“Rachel, we need you to explain everything.””
The woman on the other end breathed shakily.
“I know this is a lot.””
“No,” I whispered.
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
“This is my life.””
Silence.
Then Rachel said softly, “You’re right.””
I closed my eyes.
“Tell me.””
My father pulled a chair closer to the bed.
He stayed beside me.
Not in front of me.
Not controlling the situation.
Just there.
Rachel took a deep breath.
“Carter and I met eight years ago. He was charming. Ambitious. Everyone loved him.””
I almost laughed.
Because that was exactly how everyone described him.
The brilliant young attorney.
The man who knew how to walk into a room and make people believe he belonged there.
“He told me he came from a powerful family,” Rachel continued.
“He told me his career was about to take off. I believed him.””
“What happened?”” I asked.
“He changed after we got married.””
My fingers tightened around the blanket.
“How?””
Rachel paused.
“He started controlling everything. My money. My friends.
Where I went. Who I talked to.””
My stomach turned.
Because I knew that pattern.
I knew it too well.
“He convinced me I was lucky he stayed with me,” Rachel said.
“He made me feel like nobody else would want me.””
My father looked down.
He knew.
He had seen pieces of it.
I had just hidden the rest.
“Then I found out he was cheating.””
My heart sank.
“With who?””
Rachel gave a bitter laugh.
“Multiple women.””
The room became colder.
“How did you find out?””
“I found emails. Messages. Hotel reservations.””
I looked at my father’s folder.
The documents.
The evidence.
The secrets.
“He told me he was ending the marriage,” Rachel continued.
“But before he could, he disappeared.””
“Disappeared?””
“Yes.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he found someone new.””
My chest tightened.
“Me.””
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
That silence was enough.
“Why?”” I whispered.
“Because you were different.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does,” Rachel said.
“Carter didn’t want a woman who knew his world. He wanted someone outside it.””
My father looked at me.
“Someone he could control.””
The words hurt because they were true.
Rachel continued.
“You had a stable job. You had your own family. You weren’t impressed by his name.””
I remembered when Carter first met my father.
The way Carter smiled politely.
The way he shook his hand.
The way he later joked that my father was “simple.””
“He told me he loved that you were humble,” Rachel said.
I swallowed.
“He said he wanted someone who would appreciate him.””
A bitter feeling rose in my throat.
“He wanted someone who wouldn’t question him.””
Rachel didn’t deny it.
“He talked about you before you even knew him.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
“He knew about your family.””
My father’s face changed.
“What do you mean?””
Rachel hesitated.
“He knew your father had money.””
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
My father looked away.
And that frightened me.
“Dad?””
He was quiet for several seconds.
Then he said:
“Your grandfather left me a business.””
I blinked.
“What?””
“I never told you everything because I didn’t want you growing up believing money made someone important.””
I stared at him.
My whole life, I thought my father was just a hardworking man with a small company.
But suddenly, pieces were moving.
The old truck.
The modest house.
The simple clothes.
It wasn’t because he had nothing.
It was because he didn’t care about showing anything.
Rachel continued.
“Carter knew your father had assets. He knew your family was worth more than you let people believe.””
My hands went cold.
“So he married me for money?””
“Not just money.””
Rachel’s voice became quieter.
“He married you because he thought you were the easiest path to it.””
The words cut deeper than I expected.
I looked at my unborn son.
My baby.
The child Carter claimed to love.
“Does he know about the baby?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Rachel sighed.
“Because he told people the baby was part of his plan.””
My father stood.
“What plan?””
Rachel went silent.
That scared me.
“What plan?”” my father repeated.
Then she answered.
“He wanted you dependent.””
I felt my heart race.
“Dependent?””
“Yes.””
“He told me after you had the baby, you would quit working. He said you’d be tired, vulnerable, and easier to convince.””
I felt sick.
The doctor had said my baby was stable.
But my entire marriage was not.
“He planned all of this,” I whispered.
Rachel said nothing.
Because she didn’t need to.
A knock came at the hospital room door.
A nurse entered.
“Sorry to interrupt. Someone is here asking to see you.””
My father immediately stood.
“Who?””
The nurse looked at her clipboard.
“Your husband.””
My entire body went still.
“No.””
My father looked at me.
“You don’t have to see him.””
I stared at the door.
Part of me wanted to hide.
Part of me wanted answers.
The nurse waited.
“Should I tell him to leave?””
I thought about Carter’s face when he realized my father wasn’t powerless.
I thought about the blood on the kitchen floor.
I thought about my broken phone.
“No.””
My father looked surprised.
I sat up slowly.
“Let him come in.””
The door opened.
Carter walked inside.
But he wasn’t the same man who had stood in my kitchen.
The confidence was gone.
The arrogance was covered.
Now he wore a different mask.
Regret.
“Isabelle…”
I looked at him.
And for the first time since I met him, I didn’t feel afraid.
I felt nothing.
“I need to talk to you,” he said.
My father stepped forward.
“You have five seconds to explain why you’re here.””
Carter ignored him.
His eyes stayed on me.
“Everything you heard is a lie.””
I stared at him.
May you like
Then I asked the one question he wasn’t prepared for.
“Which part?””
