Chapter 3: The Secret Behind His Smile
The hospital lights were too bright.
That was the first thing I noticed.
After the chaos of Carter’s house, the emergency room felt almost unreal.
People moved quickly.
Nurses spoke softly.
Machines beeped around me.
For the first time in months, nobody was yelling at me.
Nobody was telling me I was too sensitive.
Nobody was making me feel like breathing was an inconvenience.
A doctor checked the baby’s heartbeat.
I held my breath.
Then I heard it.
Fast.
Strong.
Beautiful.
“He’s okay,” the doctor said.
My entire body collapsed with relief.
“He’s okay?””
The doctor smiled.
“Yes. You both had a very frightening night, but your baby is stable.””
I covered my face.
My father squeezed my hand.
“Thank God.””
I looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
His eyebrows pulled together.
“For what?””
“For not telling you sooner.””
The sadness in his eyes hurt more than anger would have.
“Isabelle, you never have to apologize for someone else hurting you.””
I looked away.
Because part of me still felt ashamed.
Not because I had done something wrong.
Because I had stayed.
I had defended Carter.
I had hidden his behavior.
I had convinced myself marriage meant patience.
My father sat quietly beside me.
Then he said, “There’s something you need to know.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He hesitated.
That scared me.
My father never hesitated.
“When Carter called tonight, I recognized his number.””
I frowned.
“My number?””
“No.””
He looked at me carefully.
“The number that was connected to your phone.””
I didn’t understand.
Then my stomach tightened.
“What are you saying?””
My father reached into his bag.
He pulled out a folder.
A thick one.
“Before tonight, I had concerns.””
I stared at the folder.
“Concerns about what?””
He opened it.
Inside were documents.
Printed emails.
Photos.
Financial records.
I looked at the first page.
And my heart stopped.
Carter’s name was everywhere.
“What is this?””
My father’s expression hardened.
“It’s information I hired someone to verify after I noticed changes in your behavior.””
I swallowed.
“What changes?””
“You stopped visiting. You stopped calling. You started asking for money less because you said Carter handled everything.””
My eyes filled.
I had thought I was protecting my marriage.
My father had been watching me disappear.
“There’s more,” he said.
I turned another page.
Then another.
And suddenly, the pain in my body felt smaller than the pain in my chest.
Carter had been moving money.
Large amounts.
Money from accounts I didn’t even know existed.
“He told me he was building our future,” I whispered.
My father shook his head.
“No.””
The word was heavy.
“He was building his escape.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Before my father could answer, my phone rang.
The same unknown number.
This time, my father picked it up.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
Young.
Nervous.
“Is this Isabelle’s father?””
My father looked at me.
“Yes. Who is this?””
The woman took a shaky breath.
“My name is Rachel.””
I sat up slightly.
“Rachel?””
My father put the phone on speaker.
The woman continued.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know how else to reach you.””
“Reach me about what?”” I asked.
Silence.
Then she said:
“About Carter.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“What about him?””
Rachel’s voice trembled.
“Mrs. Whitmore isn’t his mother’s only secret.””
I felt cold.
“What are you talking about?””
Rachel answered quietly.
“Carter has been preparing for months to leave you.””
My chest tightened.
I looked at the documents.
The hidden money.
The lies.
“But why?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then she said something that changed everything.
“Because he already has another wife.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t hear the machines anymore.
Couldn’t hear the nurses.
Couldn’t hear anything.
Another wife.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
Carter was my husband.
My baby’s father.
My entire life for two years.
“That’s impossible,” I whispered.
Rachel’s voice broke.
“I wish it was.””
My father stood.
“Who are you?””
“My name is Rachel Carterson.””
I frowned.
“Why do you know him?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Because I was his first wife.””
The phone nearly slipped from my father’s hand.

And before anyone could speak again, Rachel said the words that made my entire body go numb.
“Isabelle… you need to know why he married you.””
