Chapter 8: The Woman in the Driver’s Seat

For several seconds, I could not move.

“The woman who was driving Melissa’s car that night.””

Calvin's words kept repeating in my head.

Melissa wasn't driving.

Then who had been?

I looked at Detective Harris.

“You knew this?””

His face was rigid.

“I suspected it.””

“You suspected a woman was driving my daughter's car?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me bury her?””

“I didn't know who the body belonged to.””

The sentence hit me harder than anything else he had said.

“What?””

Harris took a breath.

“When the fire was put out, the person inside the vehicle was burned beyond visual identification. The dental records matched Melissa.””

“My daughter had dental records.””

“Yes.””

“So that was her.””

“We assumed it was.””

“Assumed?””

He looked down.

“The records were accessed by someone before we received them.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

Calvin suddenly spoke.

“I do.””

Harris turned.

“You've had seven years to tell us.””

“I was trying to keep Ava alive.””

“By lying to everyone?””

“Yes.””

Calvin's voice broke.

“I thought if I told the truth, they would kill her too.””

I stepped toward him.

“Then tell me now.””

He looked at me for a long moment.

“The woman driving that car was named Vanessa Cole.””

Rachel frowned.

“Who?””

“She worked for Harlow Medical.””

The same company Melissa had written in her notebook.

The same company that had been paying my wife.

I felt sick.

“What did she have to do with Melissa?””

“She was Melissa's coworker.””

“Doing what?””

Calvin looked at Harris.

“Money transfers.””

Harris's expression hardened.

“Keep talking.””

“Vanessa helped move money through the medical company. Melissa discovered it.””

“Why would a medical company be moving money?””

“It wasn't a medical company.””

Calvin shook his head.

“It was a shell.””

Rachel crossed her arms.

“So Melissa found out.””

“Yes.””

“And Vanessa knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why would she help Calvin?””

“She wasn't helping me.””

The way he said it made my skin crawl.

“She was helping the people above me.””

I stared at him.

“People above you?””

Calvin nodded.

“I was never the one running everything.””

Harris stepped closer.

“Name them.””

“I don't know the name.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I was paid through companies I couldn't trace.””

“Then why stay involved?””

Calvin looked at me.

“Because they had Ava.””

My chest tightened.

“How?””

He swallowed.

“They knew Daniel was her biological father.””

I remembered the birth certificate.

Daniel Reeves.

Alive.

Watching.

Ava in danger.

“Where did they keep him?””

“I don't know.””

“Then how do you know he's alive?””

“Because he contacted me.””

“When?””

“Two years after Melissa died.””

Calvin rubbed his forehead.

“He told me to stop looking for him.””

“Why?””

“Because he was being watched too.””

I could barely process it.

“Then why did he take Ava?””

“He didn't.””

Calvin shook his head.

“Not unless he's changed his mind.””

I looked at the phone.

Ava's voice had sounded frightened.

But not kidnapped.

There was something else.

Something she was trying to tell me.

Harris held out his hand.

“Give me the phone.””

I handed it over.

He examined the call history.

“He called from three different masked numbers.””

Rachel asked, “Can you trace them?””

“Not quickly.””

“Then we go to Pine Hollow.””

Harris looked at me.

“You stay behind me.””

I nodded.

Calvin remained silent.

I looked at him.

“You're coming.””

His eyes widened.

“Grant—”

“You heard the message.””

“That's what he wants.””

“Then he'll get all of us.””

Harris said, “We travel separately. I don't trust the route.””

An hour later, we were driving toward Pine Hollow.

The roads narrowed as we left town.

Trees crowded both sides.

Rain turned to mist.

I kept thinking about Melissa's final video.

*Trust Ava before you trust anyone else.*

She had known.

Maybe she'd known exactly what would happen.

At the sixty-mile mark, Harris called.

“Pull over.””

I stopped.

His vehicle pulled beside mine.

“There was another message.””

He handed me his phone.

A photograph.

Ava's bedroom door.

Taken from inside the house.

The timestamp was from twenty minutes earlier.

My stomach dropped.

“He's been in the house.””

“Yes.””

“Then why leave her there?””

“He wanted us to know he was watching.””

Calvin sat in the back seat.

He stared at the photograph.

“He's escalating.””

I turned.

“How do you know?””

“Because he always started with fear.””

I studied him.

“What happened when you met him two years ago?””

Calvin hesitated.

“He told me Melissa left something behind.””

“What?””

“He said she had proof of the entire network.””

“Where?””

“He wouldn't tell me.””

“Then why keep searching?””

“Because I thought he was going to use it against Ava.””

“And now?””

Calvin looked at me.

“Now I think he wants you to find it.””

We reached Pine Hollow just after sunset.

The motel sat beside a dark lake.

Most of the cabins were boarded up.

Only a few exterior lights worked.

The sign hung crooked over the office:

*PINE HOLLOW MOTOR COURT*

Cabin 6 was at the far end.

One light glowed behind the curtains.

Harris parked fifty yards away.

“No headlights,” he said.

We got out.

Rain hissed against the gravel.

I could hear the lake beyond the trees.

Calvin stopped.

“There's something wrong.””

“What?””

“That's not the cabin.””

I stared.

“The number says 6.””

“I know.””

“What?””

He pointed toward the far side of the property.

“Cabin 6 was demolished years ago.””

Harris looked at him.

“What?””

Calvin nodded.

“It burned down.””

My pulse jumped.

“Then what's that?””

The figure behind the curtain moved.

Harris raised his weapon.

“Stay here.””

He approached the cabin.

The door opened before he touched it.

A woman's voice called from inside.

“Detective Harris.””

He stopped.

I recognized that voice.

I had heard it once.

Seven years ago.

At the funeral.

A woman had approached me and whispered that Melissa had loved me.

I had forgotten her face.

Now I remembered it.

Dark hair.

Green coat.

Tired eyes.

Rachel stepped beside me.

“Who is that?””

I whispered,

“Laura Bennett.””

The attorney's assistant.

The woman who had worked at Reeves & Cole.

The woman who supposedly had passed information to Calvin.

She stepped into the doorway.

But she wasn't alone.

Ava stood beside her.

My heart broke open.

“Ava!””

The little girl ran toward me.

I caught her and held her against my chest.

She was shaking.

“Grandpa.””

“I've got you.””

I kissed her hair.

“Are you hurt?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Did anyone hurt you?””

“No.””

“Where were you?””

She buried her face against my shoulder.

“I'm sorry.””

“You have nothing to be sorry for.””

Laura watched us silently.

Harris kept his weapon trained.

“Hands where I can see them.””

Laura raised both hands.

“I don't have a weapon.””

“Step outside.””

She did.

Calvin stared at her.

“You.””

Laura's eyes settled on him.

“Yes.””

His face changed.

“You were supposed to be dead.””

She smiled sadly.

“That's what I wanted people to think.””

I looked at Calvin.

“You knew her?””

“She worked for Reeves.””

Laura nodded.

“I worked for Daniel.””

Harris's voice sharpened.

“Where is he?””

She glanced toward the lake.

“Not far.””

“Alive?””

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

“Why did you bring Ava here?””

Laura looked at me.

“Because she was the only person who could lead you to the truth.””

I tightened my arms around Ava.

“What truth?””

Laura reached into her coat and pulled out a small envelope.

“Melissa's final instruction.””

I stared at it.

My daughter's handwriting was on the front.

*Dad.*

My fingers trembled.

“Where did you get this?””

“Melissa gave it to me the night before she died.””

“You were with her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn't you stop her from getting on Highway 24?””

Laura's expression collapsed.

“She never got on that road.””

The rain seemed to stop.

“What?””

“Melissa was supposed to meet Daniel that night. Vanessa was driving her car.””

I looked at Calvin.

He looked as stunned as I felt.

Laura continued.

“Melissa left town in another vehicle.””

“Then who died in the fire?””

“Vanessa.””

My breath caught.

“She was wearing Melissa's clothes.””

Harris slowly lowered his weapon.

“Why would Melissa do that?””

“Because she knew someone was trying to kill her.””

I looked down at Ava.

She was staring at the ground.

“You knew?”” I asked gently.

She nodded.

“Mom told me something before she disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

“Before she disappeared?””

Ava lifted her head.

“Mom didn't die, Grandpa.””

I couldn't speak.

She reached into her pocket.

Then she handed me a small silver locket.

I knew it immediately.

Melissa had worn it every day.

My fingers closed around it.

Inside was a photograph.

Melissa.

Older.

Alive.

Standing beside a little boy.

And behind them—

Daniel Reeves.

On the back, in Melissa's handwriting, were four words.

*We are still here.*

I stared at the photograph.

Then Ava whispered,

“Mom has been watching you for seven years.””

I looked at Laura.

“Where is she?””

Laura's eyes filled with tears.

Before she could answer, a gunshot cracked through the trees.

Ava screamed.

Harris shoved us behind the cabin.

Another shot hit the wooden porch.

Calvin dropped to the ground.

Laura looked toward the lake.

“No.””

A third shot.

Then a man's voice echoed through the darkness.

“Grant!””

I froze.

“Come alone.””

Harris grabbed my shoulder.

“Don't move.””

The voice came again.

“You've spent seven years sending forty thousand dollars every January.””

My heart hammered.

Then the stranger shouted the words that stopped everyone cold.

“Those payments weren't for Ava.””

“They were ransom.””

May you like

And from somewhere across the lake, a woman screamed my name.

“Dad!””
