Chapter 6: The Name on the Certificate
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Daniel Reeves.
The name on Ava's birth certificate looked like a crack spreading through everything I thought I knew.
I took the document from Rachel.
“Read it again.””
She swallowed.
“Daniel Michael Reeves. Father.””
“And Calvin?””
“Not listed.””
My eyes dropped to Ava's date of birth.
Seven years old.
Seven years.
I had celebrated her birthdays, watched her lose her first tooth, helped her build science projects at my kitchen table.
And all this time, I had never asked the simplest question in the world.
Who was her father?
I looked at Harris.
“Tell me this is fake.””
He didn't answer.
“Detective.””
“I can't.””
“Then tell me what you know.””
Harris took the birth certificate and examined the seal.
“This looks authentic.””
Rachel said, “It has the original hospital registration number.””
I shook my head.
“Melissa was married to Calvin.””
“That doesn't mean Ava was his biological child,” Harris said.
I stared at him.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Because Calvin never told us.””
“Who knew?””
Harris hesitated.
“Melissa knew.””
“Dorothy knew.””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel knew.””
Harris looked away.
“That part isn't certain.””
I turned toward the wooden trunk.
“Then why was his name in Dorothy's storage unit?””
No one spoke.
I picked up the photograph again.
Daniel stood beside my daughter.
His hand wasn't touching her, but the way they looked at each other said enough.
Melissa's expression was different from every photograph I remembered.
She wasn't smiling for a camera.
She was looking at someone she trusted.
Someone she loved.
I felt something twist inside my chest.
“Did Calvin know?””
Rachel answered quietly.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“He was investigating Daniel before Melissa died.””
Harris nodded.
“He wasn't trying to protect his marriage.””
He pointed to the papers in my hands.
“He was trying to protect his claim over Ava.””
“Claim?””
“Guardianship. Property. Trust funds. Everything tied to her.””
I looked at the birth certificate again.
“So if Calvin isn't her father…”
“He could lose control,” Harris said.
“Over Ava?””
“Over the assets attached to her name.””
My stomach turned.
“All that money.””
Rachel nodded.
“All that money.””
I closed my eyes.
The $40,000 transfers.
The trust.
The properties.
The mysterious companies.
It suddenly looked less like generosity and more like a system.
A machine Calvin had built around a little girl who didn't even understand why adults kept lying to her.
Then I remembered what Ava had said.
*Please stop sending Dad money.*
Maybe she hadn't been talking about Calvin stealing from her.
Maybe she knew the money was connected to something much bigger.
I opened my eyes.
“Where is Ava?””
“Home with Calvin,” Harris said.
I grabbed my keys.
“We're getting her.””
Harris stepped in front of me.
“Not yet.””
I stared at him.
“She's seven years old.””
“And Calvin knows you're investigating him.””
“Exactly.””
“If you go there angry, he can accuse you of harassment. He can take Ava somewhere and disappear.””
“He's not taking my granddaughter.””
“You don't understand.””
Harris lowered his voice.
“Calvin has spent seven years preparing for this.””
The words hit me.
Preparing.
Not reacting.
Preparing.
I thought of the property company.
The trusts.
The insurance money.
The hidden accounts.
The storage unit.
He had planned.
Maybe from the beginning.
Rachel picked up the brown envelope we'd found in the trunk.
“There is more.””
She opened another folded paper.
It was a photocopy of a hospital intake form.
The patient's name was Melissa Grant Brooks.
Under emergency contact was one name.
*Daniel Reeves.*
Below it was a handwritten note:
*Father of unborn child.*
My breathing stopped.
“Unborn?””
Rachel nodded.
The date on the document was seven months before Ava was born.
I looked at Harris.
“Melissa was pregnant with Ava when she was still married to Calvin.””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel was the father.””
“That's what this document says.””
I paced slowly through the storage unit.
Melissa had never told me.
Not once.
Why?
Because she knew I'd be hurt?
Because she feared Calvin?
Or because there was something else.
Then I remembered a conversation we'd had a few weeks before she died.
She had sat across from me at the grocery store office.
I'd asked whether she and Calvin were happy.
She had smiled strangely.
“Some things are better left alone, Dad.””
I had thought she was talking about marriage problems.
Maybe she had been talking about Ava.
Rachel unfolded another document.
“This one was inside the envelope with your wife's note.””
I read it.
It was a guardianship agreement.
Melissa had named me as Ava's emergency guardian.
My name was typed clearly.
*Grant Ellis — Maternal Grandfather.*
But another name had been crossed out in red ink.
*Calvin Brooks.*
The date at the top was five days before the accident.
I looked up.
“Melissa changed Ava's guardianship.””
“Yes.””
“Why wasn't I contacted?””
Rachel answered, “Because the document was never filed.””
“Why?””
Harris pointed to the bottom.
There was a signature from the attorney.
Then beneath it:
*Client deceased before filing.*
I felt a wave of anger rise.
“She was trying to protect Ava.””
“Yes.””
“And Calvin stopped her.””
“We don't know that.””
I turned on Harris.
“We know enough.””
He held my stare.
Then something outside the storage unit crashed.
We all froze.
Harris reached for his weapon.
“Stay here.””
He moved into the hallway.
“Detective,” I whispered.
He held up a finger.
Silence.
Then footsteps.
Fast.
Running.
Harris rushed after them.
A metal door slammed somewhere in the corridor.
Rachel grabbed my arm.
“Don't.””
I pulled free.
“Ava could be in danger.””
“She isn't here.””
“That's not what I mean.””
We hurried toward the exit.
Harris returned seconds later, breathing hard.
“Gone.””
“Who?””
“Someone accessed the back gate.””
Rachel's face tightened.
“Did you see him?””
“Barely.””
Harris looked at the open unit.
“Where's the birth certificate?””
I froze.
It was no longer in my hand.
I checked my jacket.
Nothing.
Rachel checked the table.
Nothing.
The birth certificate was gone.
Someone had taken it.
Harris swore under his breath.
“That's what they came for.””
I looked at the trunk.
“Not the money?””
“No.””
“Not the photographs?””
“No.””
“The certificate.””
Harris nodded.
“Because it proves Calvin isn't Ava's father.””
I thought about that.
Then another possibility hit me.
“Unless…”
Harris looked at me.
“Unless what?””
“Unless Calvin already knew it was here.””
His expression hardened.
“And sent someone to destroy the evidence.””
We stood in silence.
Then my phone buzzed.
A text.
This time, it was from Ava.
*Grandpa, I found Mom's old phone.*
My heart jumped.
I typed back immediately.
*Where are you?*
The reply came.
*Dad's asleep.*
I stared at the message.
Then another appeared.
*I think I know where he keeps the rest of the money.*
I typed:
*Don't touch anything. Stay in your room. I'll come get you.*
The message showed as delivered.
No response.
I called.
Straight to voicemail.
I called again.
Nothing.
I felt panic rising.
“What's happening?”” Rachel asked.
“Ava isn't answering.””
Harris took my phone.
“Send her a message telling her to lock her door.””
“I already did.””
He nodded.
“Then we move.””
We rushed out of the storage facility.
I drove faster than I should have.
Every traffic light felt like an insult.
My mind kept returning to Melissa.
Her final days.
Her hidden files.
Her fear.
The guardianship paperwork.
Daniel.
The insurance money.
And Ava.
The little girl I'd promised to protect before I even knew how much protecting she would need.
When we turned onto Calvin's street, his SUV was still in the driveway.
The house looked quiet.
Too quiet.
Harris parked behind mine.
He drew his weapon.
“Stay behind me.””
We approached the front door.
It was unlocked.
I pushed it open.
“Ava?””
No answer.
The living room was empty.
The television was off.
A cup of milk sat untouched on the coffee table.
Harris checked the hallway.
“Grant.””
I followed his voice.
Ava's bedroom door was open.
The room was empty.
Her backpack lay on the floor.
One sneaker rested beneath the bed.
The window was open.
My chest tightened.
“No.””
Harris examined the windowsill.
“There are marks.””
“Is she gone?””
“I don't know.””
Rachel was standing in the hallway when she suddenly noticed something on the carpet.
A small pink hair clip.
Ava's.
She picked it up.
Then she looked at me.
“There are drops of blood.””
I stared at the carpet.
Three tiny red spots.
My legs nearly gave out.
Harris crouched.
“They're fresh.””
I grabbed the bedroom door.
“Calvin!””
A floorboard creaked behind us.
We turned.
Calvin stood at the end of the hallway.
He wasn't holding a weapon.
He wasn't smiling.
For the first time since I had known him, he looked genuinely afraid.
His eyes locked onto the blood on the floor.
Then he looked at me.
“I didn't take her.””
I stepped forward.
“Where is my granddaughter?””
He shook his head.
“I don't know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I swear.””
“Where is Ava?””
Calvin's eyes filled with something that looked like terror.
Then he whispered,
“Daniel took her.””
The hallway seemed to disappear around me.
“Daniel?””
“Daniel Reeves.””
“He's alive?””
Calvin nodded.
“He found out I was looking for him.””
Harris raised his weapon.
“Put your hands where I can see them.””
Calvin obeyed.
Then he looked directly at me.
“You need to understand something, Grant.””
“What?””
“The man you thought was dead for seven years has been watching Ava the entire time.””
My heart pounded.
“And now?””
Calvin swallowed.
“Now he's finally come back for his daughter.””
A loud crash came from downstairs.
We all turned.
Harris ran toward the basement.
I followed.
At the bottom of the stairs, a single desk lamp was still glowing.
On my old workbench lay a sheet of paper.
I picked it up.
There was only one sentence.
*Grant, you promised Melissa you'd keep Ava safe. Now prove it.*
And beneath it was a location.
A place I'd never seen before.
May you like
But the final line made my blood run cold.
*Come alone. Daniel will be waiting.*
