Chapter 8: The Divorce That Was Never Real
The words stayed in the air.
“I wasn’t the one who filed for divorce first.””
For a moment, I couldn’t understand them.
Not because they were complicated.
Because they were impossible.
I had seen the papers.
I had signed the papers.
I had watched the ink dry on the documents that ended my marriage.
Five years ago, I had sat across from a lawyer with shaking hands while the person I loved most turned into someone I barely recognized.
Marcus filed.
Marcus walked away.
Marcus chose Chloe.
That was the story I had carried for five years.
And now he was standing in front of me telling me it wasn’t true.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Marcus looked at me.
“Evelyn…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You don’t get to rewrite history because things are falling apart.””
“I’m not.””
“Then explain.””
His face tightened.
“I didn’t file those papers.””
The room felt colder.
“Then who did?””
Marcus looked at Victor.
And I knew.
Before he even spoke.
Victor.
Of course.
The man who had been behind every shadow.
The man who knew every secret.
“The divorce papers were real,” Marcus said.
I stared at him.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“They were filed.””
“By who?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Someone using my name.””
My mind raced.
A fake filing?
A false signature?
A setup?
Five years ago, I had been too devastated to question anything.
I had trusted the documents.
Trusted the lawyer.
Trusted that the person sitting across from me was telling the truth.
Because why wouldn’t I?
It was my husband.
The man I shared a home with.
The man I thought knew me.
“You’re saying our divorce was fake?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“Then what?””
He looked at me.
“The divorce was real.””
I frowned.
“Then what are you saying?””
“That the reason behind it was fake.””
Silence.
A painful, confusing silence.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Evelyn, five years ago, Marcus discovered Victor was trying to take control of the company.””
Victor smiled.
“Careful.””
Daniel ignored him.
“Marcus knew the only way to keep Evelyn away from the investigation was to make everyone believe their marriage had collapsed.””
My eyes moved to Marcus.
“You let me believe you betrayed me.””
His face fell.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Even though I expected it.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His voice was barely audible.
“Because I thought anger would keep you alive.””
I shook my head.
“That’s not an answer.””
“It is.””
“No, Marcus.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t get to destroy someone’s heart and call it protection.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
“You made me hate you.””
“I know.””
“You made me think I wasn’t enough.””
His eyes closed.
“I know.””
“And all this time…”
I looked toward Lily.
“All this time, you knew there was another reason.””
“Yes.””
The pain was overwhelming.
Not because Marcus was innocent.
He wasn’t.
He had lied.
He had chosen for me.
He had taken away my ability to decide what risks I was willing to face.
But because part of me understood something terrifying.
He had been carrying this alone.
And I hated that I still cared.
Victor interrupted.
“How touching.””
Everyone turned toward him.
He stood calmly, watching us.
“After five years, you finally tell her.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“This ends now.””
Victor laughed.
“You still think you’re in control.””
“No.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“I know I’m not.””
That surprised me.
Because Marcus Mercer admitting weakness was something I had never witnessed.
Not once.
Victor looked almost disappointed.
“You really did change.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Because of her.””
My eyes moved to him.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“You.””
The answer was so simple.
So painful.
“Before you, I thought winning was everything.””
He took a breath.
“After losing you, I realized I had spent my entire life protecting things that didn’t matter.””
I wanted to hate him.
I wanted to walk away.
But then Lily squeezed my hand.
And I remembered.
This wasn’t only about us anymore.
“What happened the night I left?””
Marcus looked at me.
Finally.
The question he had avoided for five years.
“The night you found Chloe…”
My stomach tightened.
The memory came back instantly.
The kitchen.
The broken glass.
The silence.
Marcus continued.
“She wasn’t there because we were having an affair.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Chloe looked equally confused.
Everyone looked confused.
Marcus turned toward her.
“She was there because Victor wanted her to be.””
Chloe’s face changed.
“Excuse me?””
Marcus looked ashamed.
“I used Chloe.””
The room went silent.
Chloe looked like she had been slapped.
“You…”
“I’m sorry.””
She laughed.
A bitter, broken laugh.
“Sorry?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Yes.””
“You let me believe…”
“I know.””
“You let me destroy another woman’s marriage.””
“I know.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“And you never told me?””
“No.””
Chloe looked away.
For the first time, I didn’t see the woman from my kitchen.
I saw someone else.
Someone who had also been manipulated.
Not innocent.
But not the person I had imagined.
Marcus continued.
“Victor needed Evelyn to find evidence.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because he knew you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He knew you would investigate.””
Daniel nodded.
“Your work as a compliance attorney made you dangerous.””
Victor smiled.
“Not dangerous.””
He corrected.
“Persistent.””
I looked at him.
“You used my marriage.””
“Yes.””
“You destroyed my life.””
“I exposed what was already broken.””
My anger rose.
“You don’t get to say that.””
Victor shrugged.
“Your marriage was already built on secrets.””
He wasn’t wrong.
And that made me hate him more.
Because cruel people sometimes tell pieces of the truth.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Victor wanted the files.””
“And you?””
“I wanted to keep you alive.””
I looked at him.
“You should have trusted me.””
His eyes lowered.
“I know.””
There it was again.
The same words.
But this time they sounded different.
Not like an excuse.
Like regret.
Amelia stepped forward.
“I need to tell you something.””
I turned toward her.
She looked terrified.
“What?””
She held a small envelope.
The one she had tried to reach earlier.
“This is what your father left.””
My breath stopped.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“He knew something was happening.””
I reached for it.
But before my fingers touched the envelope, Victor moved.
“No.””
His voice was suddenly sharp.
Everyone froze.
Daniel stepped between us.
“It’s over.””
Victor smiled.
“No.””
His eyes moved to Lily.
“You still don’t understand.””
Marcus immediately pulled Lily behind him.
“Don’t look at her.””
Victor ignored him.
“The child proves everything.””
I looked at Lily.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Victor smiled.
“Ask Marcus why he never told you when Lily was born.””
My stomach tightened.
I looked at Marcus.
“What is he talking about?””
Marcus went pale.
And I knew.
Another secret.
Another missing piece.
“Marcus.””
He looked at me.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
“After the paternity test.””
My heart stopped.
“Paternity test?””
Lily looked up at us.
Confused.
Marcus’s face broke.
“I didn’t know if she was mine.””
The words hit the room like an explosion.
I stared at him.
“What?””
Victor smiled.
“Now we’re finally getting somewhere.””
Marcus looked at me desperately.
“Evelyn, listen—”
“No.””
My voice was shaking.
“You kept a child from me.””
“I thought she was mine.””
“Thought?””
“I found out Chloe was pregnant after the divorce.””
Chloe’s face went white.
“What?””
Marcus looked at her.
“You never told me the truth.””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t know…”
Everyone froze.
The secrets were unraveling faster than anyone could control.
And in the middle of it all stood Lily.
A little girl who deserved none of this.
I looked at Marcus.
Then at Chloe.
Then at Victor.
And finally at Amelia’s envelope.
The truth had layers.
Every answer opened another question.
I reached for the envelope.
This time, nobody stopped me.
Inside was a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
The first words made my knees weak.
“Evelyn, if you are reading this, it means Marcus finally told you the truth.””
I looked up.
Marcus froze.
Because my father had known.
He had known Marcus would be the one to reveal everything.
I read the next line.
And my entire world changed.
“Your husband did not betray you the way you think. But the person who did…”
My eyes moved slowly across the page.
The final sentence made my blood run cold.
“Evelyn, trust no one standing in that room—not even the person you came here believing you could forgive.””
I lowered the letter.
And looked around.
Because suddenly I realized something.
May you like
The person who had destroyed my marriage…
Was still standing among us.
