Chapter 7: The Betrayal Inside My Family
I didn’t turn around immediately.
For one impossible second, I stood there frozen.
Because my mind refused to accept what my eyes were about to see.
Someone from my family.
Not Marcus.
Not Victor.
Not some stranger from the past.
Someone who had hugged me tonight.
Someone who had smiled at me.
Someone who knew exactly how much I had lost.
Slowly, I turned.
And my heart dropped.
“Amelia?””
My cousin stood near the edge of the ballroom.
The same Amelia whose wedding we were celebrating.
The same Amelia who had held Lily’s hand minutes earlier.
The same Amelia who had looked at me with sympathy.
Her face had gone pale.
Like she had been waiting for this moment.
Like she knew it was coming.
“No,” I whispered.
She didn’t speak.
That hurt more than if she had denied it.
Because silence was an answer.
“Amelia?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
The words echoed louder than the music ever had.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Evelyn, wait.””
I looked at him.
“Did you know?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation destroyed whatever hope I had left.
“Did you know she was involved?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
Almost desperately.
“I swear, I didn’t.””
I searched his face.
For once, I believed him.
Not because I trusted him.
But because I knew Marcus.
When he lied, he controlled his expression.
When he told the truth, he looked terrified.
And right now, he looked terrified.
I turned back to Amelia.
“What did you do?””
Her lips trembled.
“I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.””
I laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“That’s what everyone says.””
Victor watched from behind us.
Satisfied.
Like he had just moved the final piece into place.
Daniel looked furious.
“This was your plan?””
Victor shrugged.
“My plan was to bring the truth into the light.””
“You used a wedding.””
Victor smiled.
“I used the one place where everyone would be present.””
I looked at Amelia.
Everyone.
The word hurt.
Because that meant this wasn’t random.
This had been planned.
“You invited Marcus.””
Amelia nodded.
“Yes.””
“You invited me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her eyes dropped.
“I needed you both here.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
She looked at Marcus.
Then at me.
“Because I couldn’t carry it anymore.””
The ballroom became silent.
A bride stood in the middle of her own wedding reception, surrounded by secrets she had hidden for years.
I didn’t know what hurt more.
That Amelia knew.
Or that she had smiled at me while knowing.
“How long?”” I asked.
She swallowed.
“How long have you known?””
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“Five years.””
The answer felt like a physical blow.
Five years.
The exact amount of time my life had been turned upside down.
Five years since I lost my marriage.
Five years since I thought I knew why.
Five years since I started over.
“You knew everything.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“Not everything.””
“Then what?””
Amelia wiped her tears.
“I knew Marcus didn’t leave because of Chloe.””
My eyes moved toward Chloe.
She looked shocked.
Actually shocked.
Amelia continued.
“I knew there was something else.””
Marcus looked at her.
“How?””
Amelia looked away.
“Because I saw the documents.””
My stomach tightened.
“What documents?””
The same question.
The same nightmare.
The same hidden truth.
Amelia looked at me.
“The ones you left behind.””
I felt my heartbeat change.
“Left behind?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“After you moved out.””
My memory flashed back.
The apartment.
The boxes.
The exhaustion.
The nights I barely slept.
I remembered leaving some things behind.
But never the documents.
Never the drive.
“What did you find?””
Amelia looked at Victor.
“I found a file.””
Victor smiled.
“Exactly.””
Daniel’s face darkened.
“You had the copy.””
Amelia nodded.
“Yes.””
My throat tightened.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
And for the first time that night, I saw genuine regret.
“Because I was scared.””
I stared at her.
“Scared of what?””
She looked toward Marcus.
“Of him.””
Marcus frowned.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
That surprised everyone.
Even me.
Amelia shook her head.
“Five years ago, I didn’t know who to trust.””
She looked at me.
“I knew Evelyn was innocent.””
My eyes burned.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Marcus?””
“No.””
She looked at Victor.
“Of what happened to people who knew too much.””
The room went quiet.
Victor’s expression changed slightly.
The first sign that he wasn’t completely in control.
Interesting.
Amelia continued.
“My father worked with Marcus’s father.””
I froze.
Another connection.
Another family secret.
“I thought everyone involved was gone,” she said.
“But then I found the file.””
I looked at Victor.
“And you?””
Victor nodded.
“I knew Amelia had it.””
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you take it?””
His smile returned.
“Because she was more useful keeping it hidden.””
My stomach turned.
Amelia looked down.
“I was supposed to destroy it.””
A cold silence followed.
“But I couldn’t.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because your name was on it.””
I felt confused.
“My name?””
She nodded.
“There was a section about you.””
“What section?””
Nobody answered.
That was becoming the pattern.
Everyone knew something.
Everyone except me.
I looked at Marcus.
“Tell me.””
He looked devastated.
“Evelyn…”
“Tell me.””
His voice lowered.
“Your father left something for you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“A message.””
My breath caught.
“A message?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Marcus looked at Amelia.
She answered.
“I have it.””
My heart pounded.
After all these years.
Something from my father.
Something real.
Something untouched by everyone else’s lies.
“Where?””
Amelia reached into the small purse beside her.
But before she could pull anything out, Victor moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
Daniel noticed first.
“Don’t.””
Victor stopped.
But his hand was already inside his jacket.
The room erupted.
Guests screamed.
Chairs moved.
People backed away.
Marcus grabbed my arm.
“Evelyn, move.””
I pulled Lily toward me.
Amelia stepped back.
And Victor sighed.
Not angry.
Disappointed.
Like we had ruined his performance.
“You people always make things more difficult than they need to be.””
Marcus’s voice was cold.
“Leave.””
Victor looked at him.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
Victor’s eyes moved to Lily.
And every part of me went cold.
“The child isn’t the secret.””
Nobody spoke.
Victor smiled.
“She’s the proof.””
My fingers tightened around Lily’s hand.
“What proof?””
Victor looked directly at me.
“Proof that Marcus Mercer lied about the night you left.””
I looked at Marcus.
His face went completely pale.
Because whatever Victor was about to reveal…
Marcus had never wanted me to know.
“Tell her, Marcus.””
Marcus didn’t move.
“Tell Evelyn what really happened the night of the divorce.””
I stared at him.
The night I thought I knew.
The night that ended everything.
The night I walked away.
Marcus closed his eyes.
And whispered:
“I wasn’t the one who filed for divorce first.””
The room went silent.
Because that was impossible.
I had the papers.
I had signed them.
I had lived with the consequences.
But Marcus looked at me with tears in his eyes.
May you like
And I realized the biggest lie of my marriage…
Was the story I had been told about how it ended.
