Chapter 6: The Man Who Ended My Marriage

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not Marcus.

Not Daniel.

Not me.

Even the room seemed to hold its breath.

The man standing near the entrance looked completely out of place among the wedding decorations and smiling guests.

Everyone else was dressed for a celebration.

He looked like he had arrived for a confession.

A confrontation.

Or a funeral.

His silver hair was neatly combed back. His expensive gray suit fit perfectly. His expression was calm, almost friendly.

That was the part that unsettled me most.

People who carried bad intentions rarely looked dangerous.

They looked normal.

They smiled.

They shook hands.

They told you they were helping.

And then they destroyed everything.

Marcus stepped in front of me.

A protective instinct I never expected to see from him.

“Evelyn, take Lily and leave.””

The man smiled.

“There he is.””

Marcus’s face tightened.

“What?””

“The man who always arrives five minutes too late.””

Daniel’s expression turned dark.

“Victor.””

The man looked at Daniel.

“Still dramatic after all these years.””

My eyes moved between them.

Victor.

The name clicked.

Victor Hale.

I had seen that name before.

Not just once.

Hundreds of times.

On contracts.

On financial records.

On company documents.

A man connected to Marcus’s father’s business empire.

A man who disappeared after Marcus’s father died.

A man everyone believed had left the country.

But he was standing ten feet away from me.

Alive.

Smiling.

“You know him,” I said quietly.

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew he was alive.””

Marcus looked at me.

“I suspected.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course you did.””

“Evelyn—”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

But the anger underneath it was sharp.

“Every time I think I know the full story, there’s another secret.””

Victor watched us with interest.

Almost amusement.

“You really are exactly like your father, Marcus.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“My father has nothing to do with this.””

Victor smiled.

“He had everything to do with this.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Victor glanced at him.

“Why?””

“Because you know what happens if people find out.””

Victor laughed softly.

“People?””

He looked around the ballroom.

“At this point, Daniel, I think everyone already knows something is wrong.””

He wasn’t wrong.

Guests were whispering.

Phones were out.

The wedding had become a stage.

And everyone was watching.

I looked at Amelia.

She stood near Lily, trying to keep her calm.

I made a decision.

No more secrets.

Not tonight.

Not from me.

I turned back to Victor.

“You said you’re the reason my marriage ended.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Explain.””

Marcus immediately said:

“Evelyn, don’t listen to him.””

I looked at Marcus.

“You don’t get to tell me who to listen to.””

The words hurt him.

I saw it.

But I didn’t take them back.

Victor smiled.

“Good.””

He walked closer.

“You always were the only person in that family willing to ask the right questions.””

I stared at him.

“Family?””

Victor stopped.

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked away.

That tiny reaction made my heart race.

“Marcus.””

He didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

Victor answered for him.

“You weren’t just investigating his company, Evelyn.””

I looked at him.

“You were investigating your own family.””

The sentence made no sense.

Until it did.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“What?””

Victor looked at Marcus.

“Tell her.””

Marcus’s face went pale.

“Stop.””

Victor smiled.

“Still protecting her?””

“Stop talking.””

“After all these years?””

I felt a cold sensation move through me.

“Marcus.””

He looked at me.

And I saw it.

Fear.

Not fear of Victor.

Fear of what I was about to learn.

“What is he talking about?””

Marcus opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Victor answered.

“Your father-in-law wasn’t the only person with secrets.””

My heart stopped.

“My father?””

Marcus looked down.

And that was the moment I knew.

Whatever Victor was saying…

Marcus knew.

“You knew.””

His silence was enough.

“You knew.””

Marcus swallowed.

“Not everything.””

I stared at him.

“You knew something.””

“Yes.””

The ballroom suddenly felt too bright.

Too loud.

I looked at Marcus, the man I had married.

The man who slept beside me for years.

The man who watched me build a career.

The man who knew every fear I had.

And he had been carrying something this big.

“Tell me.””

His voice was barely audible.

“Your father wasn’t who you thought he was.””

The words hit harder than expected.

Because my father had been gone for years.

Because grief was supposed to become easier.

Not complicated.

Not reopened.

“What does my father have to do with your company?””

Marcus looked at Victor.

Victor answered.

“He helped create it.””

I felt the room spin.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Victor shook his head.

“Your father and Marcus’s father were partners.””

I looked at Marcus.

He nodded slowly.

“Before I met you?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes closed.

“Because I didn’t know how.””

The anger returned.

“You didn’t know how to tell your wife that our families were connected?””

“It wasn’t simple.””

“Nothing with you ever is.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

And they hurt because they were true.

Marcus looked devastated.

But I couldn’t let that distract me.

Not anymore.

“What happened to my father?””

Nobody answered.

That silence was terrifying.

Victor looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“That’s the question everyone wanted you to stop asking.””

I felt my hands go cold.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Victor.””

But Victor continued.

“Your father discovered what the company was really doing.””

The room became silent.

“And when he tried to expose it…”

Victor paused.

“He disappeared.””

My breath caught.

My father’s death had always been explained as an accident.

A car crash.

A tragic night.

A terrible loss.

But now this man was standing in front of me suggesting something else.

“No.””

Victor tilted his head.

“You never wondered why Marcus was so desperate to keep you away from the records?””

I looked at Marcus.

He looked broken.

Not guilty.

Broken.

“You knew about my father.””

His voice was quiet.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before we met.””

The pain that followed wasn’t anger.

It was betrayal.

A deeper kind.

“You knew my family was connected to yours, and you never told me.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed.

A short, bitter sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Victor smiled.

“Because everyone knows you’re the easiest person to manipulate with guilt.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“Enough.””

Victor ignored him.

“You know what I find fascinating about you, Evelyn?””

I didn’t answer.

“You spent five years believing Marcus betrayed you because he loved another woman.””

Chloe, who had been standing silently nearby, flinched.

Victor continued.

“But the truth is much more complicated.””

My eyes moved to Marcus.

He looked away.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because I knew.

There was another piece.

Another secret.

Another moment where he had chosen silence.

“What happened five years ago?”” I asked.

Marcus looked at me.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“After the divorce.””

I stared at him.

“After?””

“Yes.””

“You wanted to tell me after destroying my life?””

“I thought if I stayed close to you, they would find you.””

“Who?””

Victor smiled.

“Now you’re asking the right question.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

His smile disappeared.

For the first time, something serious appeared in his eyes.

“Someone much closer than you think.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Victor looked across the ballroom.

Not at Marcus.

Not at Daniel.

At someone behind me.

Someone I hadn’t noticed.

Someone who had been standing there the entire time.

I slowly turned.

And my heart stopped.

May you like

Because the person Victor was looking at…

Was someone from my own family.
