Chapter 16 - THE EVIDENCE NO ONE KNEW ABOUT

I was taken to an old cottage deep in the woods. Quiet. Isolated. Surrounded by trees. No one could hear you scream.
Miller locked me inside a small bedroom on the second floor. He didn’t speak. He didn’t look at me. He just locked the door and left.
I sat on the bed. Alone. In the dark.
I thought about Emily. I thought about what she had told me. Keep the envelope safe. Never take it off.
I pulled the waterproof bag from beneath my clothes. My hands trembled as I opened it. Inside was the envelope Thomas had given me. And beneath it… folded carefully, hidden in a pocket Emily hadn’t even known about… was a single sheet of paper.
My grandfather’s handwriting. The page that had been torn from the journal. The one Robert had missed.
I had found it that night in the study, when everyone was distracted. I had slipped it into my pocket. I didn’t know what it meant then. But I knew it was important.
I unfolded it carefully.
It was dated the day before he died.
If you are reading this, then Robert has found you. He has taken everything. But there is one thing he will never find. Deep beneath the mansion, in the old root cellar, behind the brick marked with a cross… there is a metal box. Inside it is everything. Bank records. Confessions. Names. Dates. Proof of every crime Robert ever committed. And one more thing. A video. Robert does not know it exists. He does not know I recorded him. He does not know… I knew his real name. Noah… if you have this page… you are the only hope left. Trust no one. Not the police. Not lawyers. Not family. Only yourself. And remember… courage is not the absence of fear. It is moving forward… even when you are afraid.
I read it again. And again.
Deep beneath the mansion. Behind the brick marked with a cross. Proof. Everything.
I folded the paper carefully and put it back. Then I walked to the window. It was locked. But the glass was old. Thin.
I looked around the room. Beside the fireplace lay a heavy iron poker. Just like the one Emily had used.
I picked it up. My hands were small. But I was strong. And I was not afraid. Not anymore.
I climbed onto the windowsill. I lifted the poker. And I swung it as hard as I possibly could.
May you like
Glass shattered. Cold night air rushed in.
I climbed through the broken window, cutting my hands, cutting my legs. I didn’t care. I dropped to the grass below and ran. Back toward the mansion. Back toward the truth. Back to where Robert thought there was nothing left to find.
