Chapter 10 - THE MIDPOINT TRUTH

The world seemed to stop turning.
Emily sat down heavily, staring at the words. Presumed dead.
"Is it him?" Sarah asked quietly.
Emily nodded slowly. She read the article twice, her face growing paler with every line.
"The fire happened three days ago," she said, her voice hollow. "His office. Burned to the ground. They found… remains."
She looked up at Sarah, her eyes wide and terrified.
"If Thomas is dead… who is protecting us?"
No one answered. Because we all knew.
No one.
That night, Emily stayed up late, reading through every document Thomas had given her. She made copies. She hid them in different places—under floorboards, inside books, taped to the back of drawers.
"If anything happens to me," she told me, handing me a small sealed envelope, "you keep this safe. Do not let anyone take it. Do not open it until you are older. Promise me."
I took the envelope. It felt heavy in my hands.
"I promise."
She kissed my forehead. Then she sat beside me and took my hand.
"Now I need to tell you something, Noah. Something important. You are old enough to understand."
I sat very still.
"Thomas was not the only one who knew the truth," she said. "Your grandfather… he knew. He knew his own son and wife would betray him. That is why he arranged everything the way he did. That is why he put everything in your name."
"Why?" I asked.
"Because he trusted you," she said. "Even though you were only a baby. He knew you would never betray what was entrusted to you."
She took a breath.
"And there is something else. Something Thomas told us before he died. Something he did not finish explaining."
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper.
"Before he left us at the airport… he slipped this into my hand. He said to open it only if something happened to him."
She unfolded the paper. On it, in his handwriting, were three words:
**THEY ARE NOT.**
I frowned. "What does that mean?"
Emily stared at the words.
"*They are not*… what?"
Then her eyes widened. She looked up, horrified.
"Thomas said… the person trying to steal the inheritance was not Evelyn. Then he was cut off. But what if… what if he meant…"
She stood up, pacing rapidly.
"What if neither of them is working alone? What if Daniel and Evelyn are not the masterminds? What if there is someone else?"
"Someone else?" I asked.
"Someone pulling the strings," Emily whispered. "Someone hiding in the shadows. Someone even Thomas was afraid to name."
She stopped pacing and looked at me.
"Noah… your watch. That night at the mansion. Did you record everything?"
I nodded.
"Play it again. Every word."
I pulled up the recording on my watch. We listened together. Evelyn’s voice. Daniel’s voice. Every word.
Then we heard it. A moment Thomas had never mentioned. A moment we had both forgotten.
Just before the recording ended, a third voice spoke. Quietly. From the hallway.
And it was a voice neither of us recognized.
**"Good work. Everything is going exactly as planned."**
Emily stood frozen.
"Who was that?" she whispered.
She looked at me, her face pale and terrified.
"There is someone else, Noah. Someone standing behind Daniel and Evelyn. Someone who has been planning this for longer than any of us realized."
May you like
She took my hands in hers, gripping them tight.
"And whoever they are… they killed Thomas. And now… they are coming for us."
