Chapter 11 - THE ENEMY UNSEEN

The discovery changed everything.
Emily stopped answering the phone. She stopped going into town. She locked every window and door. She checked the locks three times every night before bed.
"If there is a third person," she told me, "then nothing is as we thought. Daniel and Evelyn may be thieves… but this other person? This person kills."
We listened to the recording a dozen times. The voice was low, calm, with a faint accent neither of us could place. It spoke only once. But those few words told us everything.
There was a mastermind. Someone who had been guiding Daniel and Evelyn all along. Someone so careful they had never once appeared in any of the documents Thomas had left behind.
"Your grandfather knew," Emily said quietly one evening. We were sitting before the fire, watching the flames. "That is why his letter said: protect Noah from someone inside this family. He didn’t mean Evelyn. He didn’t mean Daniel. He meant… someone else."
"But who is family?" I asked.
Emily shook her head.
"I don’t know. Your grandfather had brothers and sisters, but they moved away years ago. There were business partners… friends… distant relatives…"
She stood up and walked to the fireplace, staring into the flames.
"Whoever they are… they have been close enough to watch us. Close enough to know our habits. Close enough to know exactly what would happen the night Noah was locked outside."
She turned back to me, her expression grim.
"They know we are gone. They know we have the documents. And they will not stop until they have everything back."
That night, Emily made a decision.
"We cannot hide forever," she said. "And we cannot wait for someone to come and rescue us. Thomas is gone. We have only each other."
She sat down beside me.
"We have to go back. Not to the mansion. Not yet. But back to where it all started. Back to your grandfather’s study. There may be documents Thomas didn’t find. There may be clues your grandfather left behind. Something that tells us who this third person is."
I looked at her, my heart pounding.
"Is it dangerous?"
"Yes," she said honestly. "Very dangerous. But if we stay here… we are waiting to be found. If we go back… we take the first step toward ending this."
She squeezed my hand.
"Will you come with me? I need you, Noah. I need you to help me remember. To help me see things I might miss."
I thought about the man chasing us through the snow. I thought about the fire at Thomas’s office. I thought about the voice on the recording.

Then I nodded.
"I’m with you, Mommy. Always."
