Chapter 9: The Truth in the Mansion

Adrian ran.

He barely remembered leaving the vault.

The courthouse doors slammed behind him as he and Evelyn hurried into the rain. Thomas followed close behind, carrying nothing but the old photograph.

“Wait,” Thomas called.

Adrian turned.

“If Daniel has Lily, going back alone is exactly what he wants.””

Adrian’s face was hard.

“I’m not going alone.””

Thomas stopped.

“What?””

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“Can you still access the old security network?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then get into the mansion cameras.””

“I’ll try.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“And me?””

Adrian stared at him.

“You're coming with us.””

Thomas blinked.

“You trust me now?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

“Because you know Daniel.””

Thomas exhaled.

“That’s fair.””

They reached Adrian’s car.

Evelyn slid into the front passenger seat.

Thomas climbed into the back.

Adrian started the engine.

His phone vibrated.

A message.

*ONE HOUR.*

Then another.

*COME HOME.*

Adrian looked at the clock.

Forty-eight minutes.

He pressed the accelerator.

Rain streaked across the windshield.

Nobody spoke for nearly a minute.

Then Thomas said quietly, “There’s something you need to know before we reach the mansion.””

Adrian kept his eyes on the road.

“What?””

“Daniel Mercer was never Grace’s investigator.””

Adrian’s hands tightened on the steering wheel.

“What?””

“He was Richard’s.””

Evelyn turned.

“You told me Daniel stopped working for Richard.””

“I lied.””

Adrian looked at him in the mirror.

“How long has Daniel been involved?””

“Since before Grace met you.””

“That’s impossible.””

“No. Richard hired him years ago.””

“To do what?””

Thomas swallowed.

“Protect the family.””

Adrian gave a bitter laugh.

“By threatening my daughter?””

“No.””

“By locking her in a room?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Thomas looked out the window.

“Daniel’s definition of protection was simple.””

“What?””

“Control everyone before they become a threat.””

The words settled heavily inside the car.

Evelyn spoke.

“That explains the surveillance.””

Adrian looked at her.

“What surveillance?””

She stared at him.

“Grace believed someone was following her.””

“And it was Daniel?””

Thomas shook his head.

“Not exactly.””

“What does that mean?””

“Daniel worked for Richard. But after Richard died, he worked for someone else.””

“Who?””

Thomas didn't answer.

Adrian glanced in the mirror.

“Who?””

Thomas finally said:

“Your mother.””

The car fell silent.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“You said she was hidden.””

“She was.””

“Then why would Daniel work for her?””

“Because Elena was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn nodded reluctantly.

“Of the person who had taken control after Richard died.””

Adrian stared ahead.

“I inherited the company.””

“On paper,” Evelyn said.

He looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

“Your father created the appearance that you controlled everything.””

“But?””

“Your voting rights were restricted.””

“By whom?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“By Elena.””

Adrian’s breathing slowed.

His mother.

The woman he had believed dead.

The woman Grace had found.

The woman who had apparently survived and disappeared.

His mind struggled to fit everything together.

“Why would my mother do that?””

Thomas answered.

“To keep you alive.””

Adrian said nothing.

They turned onto the road leading to the mansion.

As the gates came into view, Adrian saw something that made his stomach drop.

The front gate was open.

The security lights were off.

And every window in the mansion was dark.

He stopped the car.

“That’s wrong.””

Evelyn was already reaching for her phone.

“No cameras.””

“Can you bring them back?””

“They’ve been manually disconnected.””

Thomas opened his door.

“Someone doesn't want us seeing what happened inside.””

Adrian got out.

“Then let's go find out.””

The mansion door stood open.

Adrian entered first.

The silence was enormous.

“Lily!””

No answer.

“Marcus!””

Nothing.

Evelyn moved toward the living room.

The television was still on.

The screen showed Grace’s frozen face.

The teddy bear lay on the sofa.

The scissors were gone.

Adrian picked up the bear.

“Lily?””

A tiny sound came from upstairs.

A scrape.

Then silence.

Adrian looked at the staircase.

“We're going up.””

Thomas grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

Adrian turned.

“What?””

Thomas pointed to the floor.

Mud.

Fresh footprints.

Three sets.

One small.

Two adult.

“They were here.””

Adrian crouched.

The smaller prints led toward the library.

He stood.

“Lily.””

He ran.

The library door was slightly open.

Inside, the room was empty.

But the hidden wall panel stood exposed.

Another trail of footprints led deeper into the house.

Adrian followed.

They entered a narrow corridor he had never noticed before.

At the end was a steel door.

No handle.

Only a keypad.

Evelyn whispered:

“I didn't know this was here.””

Thomas stared at the door.

“I did.””

Adrian turned.

“What's behind it?””

Thomas looked at him.

“The old service tunnel.””

“Where does it go?””

“Under the mansion.””

Adrian entered a four-digit code.

Wrong.

He tried another.

Wrong.

He looked at Evelyn.

“Any ideas?””

She shook her head.

Then Thomas said:

“Grace’s birthday.””

Adrian entered it.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

A long tunnel disappeared into darkness.

Lily’s voice echoed from somewhere below.

“Daddy!””

Adrian ran down the stairs.

“I’m here!””

“Daddy!””

He followed the sound.

At the bottom, a large underground room opened before him.

Lily was sitting on a chair.

Her hands were not tied.

Her teddy bear was in her lap.

Marcus stood beside her.

And across the room was Daniel Mercer.

Adrian stopped.

Daniel smiled.

“You came.””

Adrian’s fists clenched.

“Let her go.””

Daniel glanced at Lily.

“She was never in danger.””

“Then why did you take her?””

“Because I needed you to understand urgency.””

Adrian stepped forward.

Thomas grabbed his shoulder.

“Don't.””

Daniel smiled.

“Thomas.””

Thomas stared at him.

“You should have stayed buried.””

Daniel laughed softly.

“You've always had a talent for choosing the wrong side.””

Evelyn stepped beside Adrian.

“Where is Elena?””

Daniel looked at her.

“That is the question Grace spent years asking.””

Adrian stared.

“You know where my mother is.””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Daniel smiled.

“Close.””

“Where?””

Daniel pointed at a steel door behind him.

Adrian looked at it.

A faded blue circle had been painted across the metal.

His heart dropped.

“The blue room.””

Daniel nodded.

“The real one.””

Adrian felt the pieces align.

The room upstairs had been a decoy.

This was what Grace had really meant.

The blue room wasn't simply a hidden archive.

It was a place where someone had been kept.

For years.

Adrian stepped toward the door.

“Is my mother behind that?””

Daniel said nothing.

Adrian turned.

“Open it.””

Daniel smiled.

“First, give me the notebook.””

Adrian pulled it from his jacket.

He held it up.

Daniel’s eyes fixed on it.

“There.””

“Open the door.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don't understand the bargain.””

“There is no bargain.””

“There is always a bargain.””

Adrian’s voice became dangerous.

“If you touch my daughter, you won't get anything.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

She was holding her bear tightly.

Then he looked at the notebook.

“The notebook contains only half the truth.””

“What does the other half contain?””

Daniel nodded toward Evelyn.

“She has it.””

Adrian turned.

Evelyn went completely still.

“What?””

Daniel smiled.

“Show him.””

Evelyn slowly reached inside her coat.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Adrian stared.

“You've had that all this time?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Grace gave it to me.””

“What's inside?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“The last page.””

Daniel laughed.

“And now he gets to see who betrayed Grace.””

Evelyn handed Adrian the envelope.

His fingers shook as he opened it.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

At the top was written:

*FINAL BENEFICIARY AGREEMENT.*

Below it were three names.

Richard Vale.

Elena Vale.

Grace Vale.

And beneath them was a fourth.

Adrian stared.

“No.””

Evelyn whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

The fourth name was not Thomas.

Not Daniel.

Not Evelyn.

It was:

*Adrian Vale.*

He looked confused.

“I don't understand.””

Daniel smiled.

“Read the final paragraph.””

Adrian did.

His face changed.

The agreement stated that if Grace died, all hidden assets, private evidence, and controlling shares would automatically transfer to Adrian.

But there was one condition.

Adrian had to be alive.

And unmarried.

His eyes lifted slowly.

Grace had not been protecting the company.

She had been protecting him from the people who wanted control of it.

And then he understood something even worse.

“Grace didn't die by accident.””

Daniel said nothing.

“She was killed because of this agreement.””

Silence.

Adrian looked at Evelyn.

“You knew.””

“I knew part of it.””

Thomas shook his head.

“I knew more.””

Adrian turned.

“Then tell me.””

Thomas looked toward the blue door.

“Grace planned to expose everyone before she was killed.””

“Everyone who?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Your mother.””

Adrian froze.

“My mother killed Grace?””

“No.””

Thomas’s voice was barely audible.

“Your mother ordered Daniel to protect Grace.””

Adrian frowned.

“Then who killed her?””

Nobody answered.

Lily suddenly spoke.

“Daddy.””

Adrian turned.

She was staring at the teddy bear.

“There’s a letter inside.””

“What?””

“The seam opened more.””

She pulled at the loose fabric.

A folded piece of paper slid from the stuffing.

Adrian took it.

The handwriting was Grace’s.

He unfolded it.

Only one sentence.

*Adrian, the person who killed me is the person you will least expect because you already forgave them.*

Adrian’s breath caught.

He thought of every apology he had accepted.

Every lie he had overlooked.

Every person he had defended.

Then a sound came from behind the blue steel door.

Three slow knocks.

Lily looked up.

“Daddy?””

Adrian stared at the door.

Another three knocks.

Then a woman's voice came through the metal.

Weak.

Older.

But unmistakably familiar.

“Adrian?””

His entire body went cold.

“Mom?””

The voice answered.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Daniel smiled.

May you like

And then the woman behind the door spoke the one sentence that made Adrian realize the truth was about to destroy more than one life.

“Don't trust Evelyn.”” :::
