Chapter 8: The Voice in the Dark
“Grace.””
Evelyn’s whisper vanished into the darkness.
Adrian stood perfectly still.
The vault smelled of cold metal and dust. Somewhere above them, rain hammered the courthouse roof, but down here the sound was distant, muffled, almost unreal.
“Grace?”” Adrian repeated.
Thomas said nothing.
Then the emergency lights flickered on.
A faint red glow filled the vault.
Evelyn was staring at the security speaker.
Adrian looked at Thomas.
“What did she mean?””
Thomas’s face had gone pale.
“I don’t know.””
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
The speaker crackled.
Then the woman’s voice returned.
“Adrian.””
It was softer this time.
More intimate.
The exact tone Grace used when she was trying not to wake Lily.
Adrian’s throat tightened.
“Where are you?””
Silence.
Then:
“You have spent five years believing I died with the rest of the truth.””
Adrian took a step toward the speaker.
“Grace, if this is you—”
“It isn’t.””
Thomas interrupted.
Adrian turned sharply.
Thomas was staring at him.
“It’s a recording.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
Thomas looked at her.
“You know exactly what this is.””
Evelyn said nothing.
Adrian moved toward her.
“What does he mean?””
She swallowed.
“Grace prepared something before she died.””
“What?””
“She told me that if you ever reached this vault, you would need to hear her final message.””
“Then why did you act like you recognized her voice?””
“Because I’ve heard it before.””
Adrian stared at her.
“When?””
“The night she disappeared.””
His heart stopped.
“Disappeared?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“I said the wrong word.””
“No.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“You said disappeared.””
“She died.””
“You just said—”
“I know what I said.””
Her voice broke.
“I was there.””
Thomas stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Adrian shoved him aside.
“Get out of my way.””
Thomas didn’t resist.
Adrian faced the speaker.
“Grace, tell me where you are.””
The voice answered immediately.
“Behind you.””
Adrian spun around.
Nothing.
Only shelves.
Boxes.
Thomas.
Evelyn.
Then a hidden panel clicked.
Everyone turned.
A narrow section of the far wall opened.
Inside was a small monitor.
It flickered.
Then an image appeared.
Grace.
Sitting in a dark room.
Alive.
Not a photograph.
Not a paused frame.
A video.
She was speaking.
“Adrian, I need you to understand that what you’re seeing is not happening in real time.””
Adrian stared.
Grace looked exhausted.
There were dark circles beneath her eyes.
Her hands were trembling.
“But I knew you would eventually find this place.””
She leaned closer to the camera.
“And I knew Evelyn would come with you.””
Adrian looked toward Evelyn.
Grace continued.
“She is the only person left who knows the complete story.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Adrian turned on her.
“Complete story?””
She opened her eyes.
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
“I will.””
“No more secrets.””
“I know.””
“No more protecting me.””
“I know.””
Adrian looked back at the screen.
Grace was holding an envelope.
“I need you to open the box marked Grace.””
Adrian turned toward the shelves.
He found it.
The unlabeled box with her name.
He carried it to the center table.
The cardboard was old.
Dust covered the lid.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside were three things.
A wedding ring.
A stack of bank records.
And a small black notebook.
Adrian stared at the ring.
It was Grace’s.
He had buried her wearing nothing but the necklace he had given her.
He was certain.
“She left this here?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She took it off before she disappeared.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You're doing it again.””
“Doing what?””
“Using that word.””
Evelyn looked down.
“Grace came to me the night before she died.””
Adrian froze.
“She said she had proof.””
“What proof?””
“That your father had been laundering money through a company account.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“That is not the whole truth.””
Adrian turned.
“You've had enough chances.””
Thomas stared at the ring.
“Grace wasn't investigating Richard.””
Adrian frowned.
“What?””
“She was investigating me.””
Silence.
Evelyn looked at Thomas.
“You promised you would never tell him.””
“I promised Grace.””
Thomas’s voice was bitter.
“I’m done keeping promises to dead people.””
Adrian grabbed the front of Thomas’s jacket.
“What did you do?””
Thomas didn’t fight him.
“I covered up what Richard had done.””
Adrian tightened his grip.
“Why?””
“Because Richard wasn’t just stealing.””
“What then?””
“He was paying people to make problems disappear.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
Thomas continued.
“Competitors. Journalists. Regulators. Anyone who got too close.””
Evelyn whispered, “Thomas.””
Adrian looked at her.
“And you knew?””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Years.””
“Did Grace know?””
“She discovered it.””
“And that’s why she was killed?””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
Adrian stared.
“Then why?””
Thomas looked at the screen.
“Because Grace discovered something worse.””
The monitor flickered.
Grace appeared again.
“If you’re hearing this,” she said, “Thomas has probably told you about your father.””
Adrian stared at her.
“You know everything,” he whispered.
Grace continued.
“Richard was guilty. Thomas helped him. Evelyn knew some of it.””
She paused.
“But none of them murdered me.””
Adrian’s eyes widened.
“Then who did?””
Grace looked directly into the camera.
“The person who benefited most from my death.””
Adrian glanced at Thomas.
Then Evelyn.
Neither moved.
Grace continued.
“Adrian, look inside the notebook.””
He opened it.
The first pages were filled with handwritten dates.
Payments.
Names.
Locations.
Then he found one phrase repeated again and again.
*CONTROL TRANSFER.*
“What does this mean?””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“It means the company was never transferred entirely to you.””
Adrian looked at her.
“What?””
“Your father created a second beneficiary.””
“Who?””
“Someone who could take control if you died.””
Adrian’s pulse accelerated.
“Who?””
Evelyn pointed at the notebook.
“Read the last page.””
He did.
There was only one line.
*BENEFICIARY: A. VALE.*
Adrian frowned.
“That’s me.””
“No.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Look at the signature.””
He stared.
The signature was not his.
It belonged to his father.
Beneath it was another name.
Adrian’s mother.
*ELENA VALE.*
He dropped the notebook.
“No.””
Thomas moved toward him.
“Now you understand.””
“My mother was dead.””
“Yes.””
“I saw her casket.””
“Yes.””
“Then why would she be listed as beneficiary?””
Thomas looked at Evelyn.
“Because she wasn't dead.””
The room seemed to stop.
Adrian shook his head.
“You're lying.””
“I wish I were.””
He looked at the photograph Thomas had shown him earlier.
His mother.
Grace.
Standing together outside a hospital.
His mother wasn't dead.
She had been alive.
She had been part of Grace’s investigation.
And somehow she had disappeared from his life without anyone telling him.
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
Adrian shouted.
“WHERE IS SHE?””
Evelyn flinched.
Thomas looked away.
The speaker crackled again.
Grace’s voice returned.
“Adrian, I know this is difficult.””
He stared at the monitor.
“How could you know?””
“Because I made the same discovery.””
She reached toward the camera.
A photograph appeared on screen.
A woman in a hospital bed.
Adrian recognized her immediately.
His mother.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Alive.
Adrian’s knees nearly gave out.
He grabbed the table.
“Where?””
Grace continued.
“She survived what happened to her.””
“What happened?””
“Richard believed she knew too much.””
Thomas whispered, “He tried to have her killed.””
Adrian looked at him.
“But she survived.””
“Yes.””
“And Grace found her?””
“Yes.””
Evelyn finally spoke.
“She was the one who helped Grace hide the evidence.””
Adrian looked at the photograph.
His mother.
Grace.
The missing years.
The secret accounts.
The blue room.
Everything was beginning to connect.
Then Grace’s voice became urgent.
“But there’s one thing I couldn't protect.””
The screen changed.
A hospital corridor.
A clock.
A date.
Five years ago.
The night Grace supposedly died.
A figure appeared at the end of the corridor.
Adrian leaned closer.
The figure entered the room where Grace had been.
The image was grainy.
But the clothing was familiar.
A dark coat.
A silver tie.
Then the figure turned toward the camera.
Adrian stopped breathing.
Thomas had been right.
The man in the video wasn't Thomas.
It was someone else.
Someone Adrian knew.
Someone who had been in his life every day since Grace died.
The screen froze on the face.
Adrian whispered the name.
“Daniel?””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
Her face was white.
She whispered:
“That isn't Daniel.””
The monitor zoomed in.
And Adrian recognized the man.
It was Marcus.
The estate manager.
The man he had just left alone with Lily.
Adrian’s phone suddenly rang.
He answered.
“Marcus?””
No response.
Only Lily crying in the background.
Then a man’s voice spoke.
“Mr. Vale.””
Adrian froze.
The voice was not Marcus’s.
It was Daniel’s.
“You finally found the recording.””
Adrian’s blood turned cold.
“What have you done with my daughter?””
A pause.
Then Daniel said:
“Nothing yet.””
Adrian gripped the phone.
“Where is she?””
“You have one hour to bring the notebook to the mansion.””
“And if I don't?””
The voice became colder.
“Then Lily learns why her mother had to die.””
The line went dead.
Adrian looked at Thomas.
Then Evelyn.
Then the frozen image of Marcus.

And for the first time that night, he realized the vault had never been the trap.
The mansion was.
