Chapter 4: Evelyn’s Hidden File
Adrian stared at the second USB drive in Evelyn’s hand.
For a moment, the only sound in the blue room was the steady rhythm of rain against the mansion windows above them.
Then Adrian spoke.
“Where did you get that?””
Evelyn stepped farther into the room.
Her heels clicked against the old stone floor.
“From somewhere Grace never expected me to find.””
Marcus immediately moved between them.
“Mrs. Evelyn, this room is private.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“You were always too loyal to her.””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“And you were always too interested in what wasn’t yours.””
The words landed harder than Adrian expected.
Evelyn’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Adrian noticed.
He noticed everything now.
Every pause.
Every glance.
Every word left unfinished.
“You knew about this room,” Adrian said.
Evelyn looked at him.
“Yes.””
The answer was so direct that it almost shocked him.
“You admit it?””
“I never said I didn’t know it existed.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Five years.””
His voice became quieter.
“You knew there was a hidden room in my house for five years?””
“It wasn’t your house when Grace created it.””
His eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn looked around the room.
“This place belonged to your father.””
Adrian glanced at the shelves.
The files.
The camera.
The locked cabinets.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying your father built this room for secrets.””
Marcus looked away.
Adrian noticed.
“Marcus.””
The older man slowly looked up.
“Did you know?””
Marcus hesitated.
“That depends on what you mean.””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“Don’t do that.””
Marcus sighed.
“I knew there was a room.””
“And?””
“I didn’t know what was inside.””
“You never opened it?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Because your father ordered me never to.””
Adrian laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because nothing made sense anymore.
“My father.””
He looked at the blue walls.
“My father had a secret room.””
“Yes,” Evelyn said.
“And Grace found it.””
“Yes.””
“And she recorded everything.””
“Yes.””
Adrian turned toward her.
“Then why are you here?””
Evelyn lifted the USB drive.
“Because Grace did not show you everything.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“She was protecting him.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Was she?””
Adrian took the drive from Evelyn’s hand.
She did not resist.
That worried him more.
“What’s on this?””
“My evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
“The truth.””
Adrian looked at the computer.
“There are already three files.””
“This one is different.””
“How?””
Evelyn’s eyes moved toward the screen.
“This one explains why Grace was wrong.””
The room went silent.
Adrian stared at her.
“Wrong about what?””
Evelyn took a breath.
“About who she should have feared.””
For the first time, Adrian saw something other than confidence in her face.
He saw exhaustion.
Like she had been carrying a story for years.
A story she hated.
“Put it in,” she said.
Adrian hesitated.
Then he connected the USB.
A single folder appeared.
*EVELYN’S STATEMENT.*
He clicked it.
A video loaded.
Evelyn appeared on screen.
But not the Evelyn standing in front of him.
This version looked younger.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face was pale.
She sat in the same blue room.
The same chair where Grace had recorded her message.
Adrian looked at the real Evelyn.
“What is this?””
She did not answer.
The video began.
“I know what people think of me.””
Evelyn on the screen looked directly into the camera.
“They think I married into this family because of money.””
Adrian frowned.
She continued.
“They think I wanted Grace gone.””
The real Evelyn looked away.
“But they don’t know what happened before she died.””
Adrian watched carefully.
On the video, Evelyn placed a folder on the desk.
“Five years ago, I found out that Richard Vale was hiding something.””
Adrian froze.
His father’s name.
Richard Vale.
Evelyn continued.
“I found financial transfers connected to illegal activity.””
Marcus whispered, “No.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You knew?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
On the screen, Evelyn opened the folder.
“I confronted him.””
Her voice became softer.
“He told me I didn’t understand what I was seeing.””
Adrian leaned closer.
“What happened?””
Video Evelyn looked down.
“He threatened me.””
The room became colder.
“He told me that if I continued asking questions, I would lose everything.””
The video paused briefly.
Then resumed.
“I was afraid.””
Real Evelyn whispered:
“I was terrified.””
Adrian looked at her.
“You never told me.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After Grace died.””
“Then why didn’t I know?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because Grace stopped me.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What?””
“She told me you weren’t ready.””
The video continued.
“Grace found out what I discovered.””
Evelyn on the screen held up a photograph.
“She came to me.””
Adrian stared.
“She asked me to help her.””
The video flickered.
Then another image appeared.
Grace and Evelyn.
Together.
In the blue room.
Adrian couldn’t move.
The two women who seemed to hate each other had once stood in this room together.
Planning something.
Evelyn’s voice came from the video.
“We were not enemies.””
Adrian looked at her.
“What happened?””
The real Evelyn said nothing.
The video continued.
“Then Grace found the final piece of evidence.””
A document appeared on screen.
The top line was blurred.
But one word was clear.
*TRANSFER.*
Evelyn continued.
“She discovered someone inside the family had been moving money for years.””
Adrian stared.
“Who?””
The video stopped.
A password prompt appeared.
Adrian looked confused.
“Another lock?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Grace wanted only you to see it.””
“Then why give me this?””
“Because I think you deserve the truth.””
Adrian looked at the password box.
“What’s the password?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Maybe Grace left a clue.””
Adrian thought.
The bear.
The blue room.
The hidden files.
Grace had created a trail.
Not because she wanted to hide the truth.
Because she wanted to make sure only the right person found it.
He looked around the room.
Then his eyes stopped on the chair.
The chair Grace had used.
Something was carved into the wood.
Tiny letters.
He walked closer.
A sentence.
*THE PERSON YOU TRUST MOST IS THE PERSON YOU NEVER QUESTION.*
Adrian stared.
His mind raced.
The person you trust most.
Someone close.
Someone who had access.
Someone who knew the family.
He typed one name.
*EVELYN*
Wrong.
The computer beeped.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Grace always was dramatic.””
Adrian looked at her.
“Who else?””
He tried another.
*MARCUS*
Wrong.
Marcus stepped back.
“I would never.””
Adrian believed him.
But the password remained.
He looked at the sentence again.
The person you trust most is the person you never question.
Then suddenly, he understood.
Not Evelyn.
Not Marcus.
Someone else.
Someone he had trusted without hesitation.
His fingers moved.
He typed:
*GRACE*
The screen unlocked.
Everyone went silent.
A single video file appeared.
*FINAL CONFESSION.*
Adrian clicked.
Grace appeared again.
But this time, her face was different.
She looked broken.
“Adrian.””
She took a deep breath.
“If you are watching this, then you know Evelyn was not the person who destroyed our family.””
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
She looked stunned.
Grace continued.
“But there is something you need to understand.””
She leaned closer.
“The person who betrayed us was someone you love.””
Adrian’s heart stopped.
Grace looked directly into the camera.
“Someone who has been standing beside you this entire time.””
The video glitched.
A distorted voice came through the speakers.
Then Grace whispered one final sentence.
“The truth about your father’s death is hidden in the one place you never thought to search.””
The screen went black.
A message appeared.
*VIDEO CORRUPTED.*
Adrian stared.
“What place?””
No answer.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone looked at him.
The number on the screen was unknown.
Adrian answered slowly.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a child’s frightened voice came through.
“Daddy…”
Adrian’s face changed.
“Lily?””
The voice trembled.
“Daddy, I found something.””
He stood instantly.
“What?””
A pause.
Then Lily whispered:
“I found Mommy’s letter.””
Adrian looked toward the staircase.
“Where are you?””
Another pause.
Then her voice became smaller.
“Your office.””
Adrian felt cold.
“My office?””
“Yes.””
“Lily, leave the room now.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
The answer came in a whisper.
“Because someone locked the door from the outside.””
The call suddenly ended.
Adrian was already running.
And behind him, Evelyn looked at the dark computer screen.
May you like
Because she knew exactly what Lily had found.
And she knew who had locked the door.
