Chapter 9: The Night Everything Broke
The room filled with alarms.
“Claire, stay with me,” the doctor said.
I gripped the nurse's hand so hard my fingernails dug into her skin.
“What happened?”” I asked.
“We're seeing a drop in the baby's heart rate.””
“Is my baby dying?””
“No one is saying that. We're responding immediately.””
Another nurse pushed a cart beside the bed.
“Put the oxygen on.””
Cold air rushed over my face.
My father stood near the wall, pale and motionless.
Daniel was behind him.
Eric was gone.
I didn't even remember seeing him leave.
“Doctor,” I whispered, “please save my baby.””
“We're doing everything we can.””
The monitor beeped rapidly.
Then slowly.
Then rapidly again.
I stared at the number on the screen.
It was lower than before.
My whole body shook.
“Can you hear her?”” I asked.
The doctor pressed the ultrasound probe against my abdomen.
“We've got movement.””
“Is the heart rate coming back?””
“It's improving.””
I started crying.
A nurse squeezed my shoulder.
“Breathe, Claire.””
“I can't.””
“You can.””
I tried.
In.
Out.
In.
Out.
The doctor watched the monitor.
“There.””
The heartbeat climbed.
One number.
Then another.
Then higher.
The room seemed to exhale together.
“She's recovering,” the doctor said.
My eyes closed.
“Oh, thank God.””
My father covered his face with one hand.
Daniel turned away.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
When the doctor finally stepped back, I looked at him.
“What happened?””
“Sometimes the cord can compress temporarily. It doesn't mean there's a permanent problem, but given your contractions and how far along you are, we want to monitor you closely.””
“Could she come tonight?””
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“Would she survive?””
“At thirty-two weeks, most babies do very well with appropriate care. But we want to avoid delivery unless necessary.””
I nodded.
“Do whatever you have to.””
The doctor looked at me.
“We will.””
He left with the nurses.
The room became quiet again.
I stared at my phone on the floor.
My father picked it up.
The screen was still lit.
Vanessa's messages were visible.
He read the last line.
*After that, he planned to make sure you never took your child home.*
My father's hand tightened around the phone.
“I'm going to the police.””
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“I have enough.””
“Not yet.””
“What?””
“I want Vanessa here.””
His expression changed.
“You want her to come here?””
“I want to hear everything from her.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“She'll come.””
“How do you know?””
“Because she called me before I came upstairs.””
I stared at him.
“What did she say?””
“That Eric had already threatened her.””
“Why?””
“Because she has copies of the original clinic records.””
My father asked, “Where?””
“Safe deposit box.””
“How do we get them?””
Daniel looked at me.
“She'll give them to Claire.””
I swallowed.
“Why me?””
“Because she says you're the only person who can expose the entire arrangement.””
I felt a strange mix of fear and anger.
“What arrangement?””
Daniel looked toward the door.
“The one that began before your marriage.””
An hour later, Detective Harris returned.
She had two officers with her.
“We found Eric,” she said.
My father stood.
“Where?””
“Parking garage.””
“Did you arrest him?””
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“We need probable cause for the specific charges we're pursuing.””
My father looked furious.
“He abandoned his pregnant wife on the roadside.””
“I know.””
“He tried to access the hospital.””
“I know.””
“He broke into the house.””
“We have evidence of that.””
“Then what are you waiting for?””
Detective Harris looked at me.
“We're waiting for the medical records, financial records, and electronic evidence to establish a broader pattern.””
I understood.
Eric wasn't going to get out of this with one bad decision.
They were building something bigger.
“Can I ask you something?”” I said.
“Of course.””
“Why did Eric bring Daniel here?””
Detective Harris looked at Daniel.
“That's what we still don't understand.””
Daniel answered.
“He needed me to sign something.””
“What?””
Daniel took a breath.
“A document acknowledging the baby.””
My father frowned.
“Why?””
“Because if I legally acknowledge paternity, the trust would activate.””
I stared.
“So Eric wanted you to sign it.””
“Yes.””
“Then he could claim the trust.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“The trust would transfer to the child's legal guardian.””
My stomach dropped.
“Me.””
“Yes.””
I whispered, “Then why would Eric want that?””
Daniel looked at me.
“He doesn't.””
Silence.
“What?””
“He doesn't want the trust in your hands.””
“Then what does he want?””
Daniel's expression darkened.
“Control of you.””
My father stepped toward him.
“Explain.””
“He needed Claire dependent on him.””
“How?””
“Financially.””
Daniel began counting on his fingers.
“She doesn't control the joint accounts. He controls the mortgage. He has her medical records.
He knows she's financially dependent. He has a forged legal agreement naming Vanessa as intended parent. And now he has tried to establish that the baby isn't his.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because if he can convince a court that you are unstable, financially irresponsible, and surrounded by conflicting paternity claims, he can fight for temporary custody.””
My stomach dropped.
“And then?””
Daniel's voice became quiet.
“Then Vanessa gets involved.””
I thought about the message.
She wanted the baby.
My father whispered, “They planned to take the child.””
Daniel nodded.
“Not immediately.””
“Then when?””
“After the birth.””
My entire body went cold.
“They were going to take my baby from the hospital.””
“Yes.””
Detective Harris wrote something down.
“Did Eric tell you this directly?””
“No.””
“Then how do you know?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Because I saw the documents.””
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small flash drive.
“Everything is on here.””
My father stared at it.
“Where did you get that?””
“Eric's office.””
Detective Harris took it carefully.
“What exactly is on it?””
“Contracts. Emails. Payment records. Draft custody papers.””
“And evidence involving Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
I felt my throat close.
“Why did you wait until now?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because until tonight, I was afraid.””
“Of Eric?””
“Of what would happen if I crossed him.””
He lowered his eyes.
“I should've done this sooner.””
I didn't know what to say.
Then the door opened.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa stood there.
She wore a black coat and carried a leather case.
Her face looked exhausted.
She stopped when she saw me.
“Claire.””
I stared at her.
“You stole my embryo.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.””
My father stepped between us.
“Then why are you here?””
“Because I was wrong.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That's all?””
“No.””
She entered slowly.
“I was desperate.””
“So was I.””
“I know.””
“You don't know anything about me.””
“I know enough.””
She set the leather case on the table.
“I know Eric lied to you. I know your father lied to you. And I know I helped them.””
My father said, “Be precise.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I participated in the fertility scheme.””
“Why?””
“To keep Daniel's family from losing everything.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You said Eric threatened you.””
“He did.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
She opened the case.
Inside were folders.
Original contracts.
Bank statements.
Clinic correspondence.
Photographs.
I stared at the top document.
There was a date.
Three months before my wedding.
Vanessa slid it toward me.
“This is the original agreement.””
I picked it up.
My name was not on it.
Vanessa's was.
Daniel's was beside hers.
And then I saw something else.
Eric's signature.
My father's signature.
I looked up.
“You both signed this?””
My father said quietly, “I did.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
“Because I believed I could control the situation.””
“You couldn't.””
“No.””
I turned the page.
There was a handwritten note attached to the bottom.
*Embryo to be transferred only with Claire Bennett's consent.*
I stared at it.
“But I never consented.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“That's where everything changed.””
She reached into the case and pulled out another folder.
“This is the consent form they used.””
I looked at the signature.
My name.
But the handwriting was wrong.
It looked close.
Almost convincing.
But not mine.
“It was forged.””
“Yes.””
“Who forged it?””
Vanessa looked at Eric's signature on the previous page.
“He did.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why would he want the embryo transferred to me?””
“Because he discovered the trust clause.””
“What clause?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“The mother who gives birth to the Mercer heir receives legal control of the trust until the child turns twenty-five.””
My eyes widened.
“And Eric could control the money through me.””
“He thought he could.””
“Why didn't it work?””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Because there was another clause.””
Daniel took over.
“The mother must remain married to the person who sponsored the original fertility arrangement until the child is born.””
I looked at Eric's name.
“He sponsored it.””
“Yes.””
My father's face hardened.
“Then once Claire gave birth—”
“Eric would control the trust through the marriage.””
I stared at the papers.
Everything suddenly made horrible sense.
The house.
The pregnancy.
The money.
The lies.
He didn't need to own me.
He only needed me to stay his wife long enough.
My phone buzzed.
Detective Harris looked at me.
I picked it up.
A message from Eric.
*You should ask Vanessa why she really switched the embryo.*
I looked up.
Vanessa's face had gone white.
“What did you do?”” I asked.
She didn't answer.
“Vanessa?””
She closed her eyes.
“I switched it because the first embryo wasn't viable.””
My father frowned.
“What?””
“I found out the embryo assigned to me had a genetic abnormality.””
I stared.
“So you took mine.””
“Yes.””
“You chose my child because yours wasn't healthy enough.””
Vanessa started crying.
“I was terrified.””
I felt sick.
“But why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Eric told me you would never know.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you know?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
I looked at my father.
“Did you?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“No.””
For the first time, I believed him.
The room went silent.
Then Vanessa reached into the case.
“There is one last document.””
She handed it to Detective Harris.
“It proves what Eric intended to do after the birth.””
Detective Harris read it.
Her expression changed.
“What is it?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“A temporary guardianship order.””
My heart stopped.
“Guardianship of the baby?””
“Yes.””
“In Eric's name?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“In Vanessa Mercer's name.””
My blood ran cold.
“But I would be the mother.””
“Yes.””
“So how could she get custody?””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“Because Eric prepared evidence claiming you were mentally unfit.””
I stared at her.
“What evidence?””
She looked directly at me.
“Your medical history.””
My stomach dropped.
“The panic attacks. The antidepressants. The notes about anxiety after your miscarriage.””
I couldn't breathe.
“They were collecting everything.””
Detective Harris looked up.
“This document is dated.””
She turned it toward me.
It was signed six months earlier.
Before I was pregnant.
Before the fertility procedure.
Before Eric ever told me we were trying for a baby.
I stared at the signature at the bottom.
Eric's.
Then I saw the final line.
*Execution to occur immediately following Claire Bennett's delivery.*
My blood went cold.
“He planned this before I even got pregnant.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
My father took my hand.
“He never intended to let you keep the baby.””
Then another sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Fast.
Heavy.
Security shouted.
Someone slammed into the door.
Detective Harris stood.
“Stay where you are.””
The door handle began to turn.
My father's grip tightened around my hand.
And then I heard Eric's voice on the other side.
“Claire!””
He pounded on the door.
“Open it!””
Detective Harris drew herself between us and the entrance.
Eric shouted again.
“You don't know what they've done to you!””
The door shook under another blow.
Then he screamed one final sentence.
“Claire, ask your father who signed your original birth certificate!””
May you like
I looked at my father.
His face went completely white.
