Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Gone
The name she whispered was one I never expected.
“Alexander Bennett.””
I stared at her.
“Your brother?””
Eleanor nodded.
“I haven’t seen him in twenty-five years.””
“Why?””
She looked toward the window.
“Because everyone believed he died.””
The answer made my skin crawl.
“Everyone?””
“Yes.””
I stood up.
“How does someone fake their own death?””
Eleanor’s expression was full of guilt.
“I don’t know.””
“But you believe him.””
She didn’t respond.
That was answer enough.
We returned to the hospital immediately.
Grandpa was awake.
When he saw Eleanor’s face, he knew something had happened.
“What happened?””
She closed the door.
“Alexander called.””
The change in Grandpa was instant.
His entire body stiffened.
“No.””
I had never heard fear in his voice before.
Not once.
“Who is Alexander?”” I asked.
Grandpa looked at me.
“Eleanor’s brother.””
“I know that.””
I stepped closer.
“I want the truth.””
He looked away.
“Alexander was the person who started all of this.””
Eleanor crossed her arms.
“Tell her.””
Grandpa closed his eyes.
“I met Alexander before I met you.””
I looked between them.
“He helped you with the invention?””
Grandpa nodded.
“He was brilliant.””
A bitter smile appeared.
“But he was also obsessed.””
“With what?””
“Power.””
The word hung in the air.
“He didn’t want to create something that helped people.””
Grandpa’s voice lowered.
“He wanted something that could make him untouchable.””
I remembered the letter.
The betrayal.
The secrets.
“Did he hurt Sarah?””
Grandpa looked at me.
And the sadness in his eyes answered before his mouth did.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“How?””
Grandpa stared at his hands.
“Sarah discovered what Alexander was doing.””
“And?””
“He tried to silence her.””
Eleanor whispered:
“David…”
He looked at her.
“I should have told you.””
She shook her head.
“You should have fought.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I tried.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.
“What happened to my father?””
Grandpa looked at the floor.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“He disappeared the same night Sarah did.””
My heart broke.
Two people.
My parents.
Both gone.
Both connected to the same secret.
“Why did you raise me?””
Grandpa looked at me.
The pain on his face nearly destroyed me.
“Because Sarah trusted me.””
I froze.
“She gave you to me?””
He nodded.
“The night before she disappeared, she came to my house.””
His voice became softer.
“She was holding you.””
I covered my mouth.
“You knew me as a baby?””
“Yes.””
A tear fell from his eye.
“She placed you in my arms and said, ‘Protect my daughter.’”
I looked away.
All my anger disappeared.
Not completely.
But enough to understand.
Grandpa had never hidden the truth because he didn’t care.
He hid it because he was terrified.
That evening, the hospital received another visitor.
Alexander Bennett.
Alive.
Older.
Walking with a cane.
The nurses tried to stop him.
But he knew exactly where he was going.
He entered Grandpa’s room.
And the first thing he said was:
“You look older, David.””
Grandpa stared at him.
“You’re supposed to be dead.””
Alexander smiled.
“So are many people.””
Eleanor stepped between them.
“You lied to everyone.””
Alexander looked at his sister.
“You never understood what I was trying to do.””
“You destroyed people.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I protected something bigger than all of us.””
I stepped forward.
“You destroyed my family.””
His expression changed.
For a second, he looked guilty.
Then it vanished.
“Your family was destroyed long before I arrived.””
Grandpa’s voice became cold.
“Leave.””
Alexander ignored him.
Instead, he looked at me.
“You want answers, don’t you?””
I didn’t respond.
He smiled.
“I can give them to you.””
Eleanor grabbed my arm.
“Nia, don’t.””
Alexander reached into his coat.
He pulled out a photograph.
And placed it on the table.
I looked down.
My heart stopped.
It was a picture of my mother.
Sarah.
Standing beside a man.
My father.
Thomas.
But that wasn’t what shocked me.
It was the person standing behind them.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I had seen before.
Someone who had been part of my life for years.
I looked at Alexander.
“Who is that?””
His smile disappeared.
“That is the person who has been protecting you.””
I picked up the photograph.
My hands shook.
May you like
Because behind my parents…
stood my grandfather.
