Chapter 6: The Daughter Nobody Knew About
I couldn’t move.
The words didn’t make sense.
My mother’s name.
The secret.
The necklace.
Sarah.
Everything was connected.
But I couldn’t see how.
Eleanor held the document carefully.
Like it might break.
“Your grandfather changed your records.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
She looked at the paper again.
“Because he was protecting you.””
“From who?””
Neither of us answered.
Because we already knew.
Michael.
The name had followed us from the beginning.
I grabbed the document.
“My mother’s name was Sarah?””
Eleanor nodded slowly.
The world became silent.
My knees weakened.
“No.””
I whispered it.
“No, that’s impossible.””
But the paper didn’t lie.
Sarah Carter.
Mother.
Nia Carter.
Daughter.
I sat down.
All my life, I thought my parents were strangers who left me behind.
I thought my grandfather simply stepped in because nobody else would.
But he wasn’t just raising me.
He was protecting me.
“You knew?”” I asked Eleanor.
She shook her head quickly.
“No.””
“Then why did Grandpa never tell me?””
Her eyes softened.
“Because he was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
The answer came from behind us.
A voice.
An unfamiliar voice.
“You should have listened to him.””
We turned.
A man stood at the entrance of the hidden room.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
But the thing that terrified me was not his appearance.
It was Eleanor’s reaction.
She stepped backward.
“No…”
The man smiled sadly.
“Hello, Eleanor.””
She whispered his name.
“Michael.””
My heart stopped.
The person behind everything was standing right in front of us.
Michael Carter walked slowly into the room.
He looked around at the documents.
The photographs.
The memories.
“David always loved hiding things.””
Eleanor’s voice was cold.
“You destroyed his life.””
Michael looked at her.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“David destroyed his own life by choosing love over ambition.””
I stepped forward.
“You took Sarah.””
His eyes moved to me.
And for a second, something strange appeared on his face.
Regret.
Then it disappeared.
“You look like her.””
My voice hardened.
“Like who?””
“Your mother.””
The answer made my chest tighten.
“You knew her?””
Michael looked away.
“I knew everyone involved.””
“Where is she?””
Silence.
I stepped closer.
“Where is my mother?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his coat and placed a small envelope on the desk.
“Your grandfather wanted you to find this eventually.””
I didn’t touch it.
“What is it?””
“The reason Sarah disappeared.””
Eleanor stared at him.
“You expect us to trust you?””
Michael smiled faintly.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I expect you to read it.””
Before I could respond, footsteps echoed above us.
More than one person.
Michael’s expression changed.
“They found us.””
“Who?”” I asked.
He looked toward the stairs.
Then whispered:
“The people your grandfather was actually afraid of.””
The lights in the garage above suddenly turned on.
A shadow moved across the floor.
Michael grabbed the envelope and pushed it toward me.
“Take it.””
I caught it.
“Why are you helping us?””
His eyes met mine.
And for the first time, I saw real pain.
“Because Sarah was my daughter too.””
I froze.
The footsteps grew closer.
Eleanor looked at Michael.
“What did you say?””
Michael swallowed.
“Your grandfather never told you the whole truth.””
The garage door above opened.
Someone shouted.
Michael stepped back into the darkness.
“Nia.””
I looked at him.
His voice dropped to a whisper.
“Before you decide whether I’m the villain…”
May you like
A pause.
“Ask David who your real father was.””
