Chapter 9: The Truth Grace Died Protecting
I had spent seven years believing the worst moment of my life was the day Grace died.
I was wrong.
The worst moment was standing in my own house, staring at an empty hallway, knowing my daughter had been taken by the same people who destroyed my family.
And knowing I had been standing inches away.
“Lily!””
My voice tore through the house.
No answer.
I ran from room to room.
Her bedroom.
The kitchen.
The living room.
Nothing.
Only silence.
The kind of silence that made every second feel like a punishment.
Daniel followed behind me.
“Marcus.””
I turned.
My anger came out before my words.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“You knew him.””
Daniel didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course you did.””
“Marcus—”
“You knew Victor was alive.””
His face tightened.
“I suspected.””
“Suspected?””
I stepped closer.
“My daughter is gone.””
The words hit him.
Good.
They should have.
“I need answers, Daniel.””
He nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
For once, there was no defense.
No excuse.
Only guilt.
“Victor Blackwell was never dead.””
I stared at him.
“Then whose funeral did I attend?””
Daniel looked down.
“An actor.””
The room felt unreal.
“Explain.””
“Victor disappeared after your father’s death was announced. He created another identity. He wanted everyone to believe he was gone.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked toward the hallway where Lily disappeared.
“Because he was running from the same thing he created.””
I clenched my fists.
“You keep speaking in pieces.””
“Because every piece is connected.””
“Then connect them.””
Daniel took a breath.
“Your grandfather built Blackwell Holdings.””
I nodded.
“Everyone knows that.””
“But there was something nobody knew.””
He looked at me.
“Your grandfather had another son.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Victor.””
I stared.
“My father knew?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“Your grandfather believed Victor was dangerous.””
The words sounded impossible.
“Why?””
“Because Victor didn’t want to build the company.””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“He wanted to own it.””
I looked around my house.
Everything suddenly felt like a place built on lies.
“Then why did my father leave the company to me?””
“Because he trusted you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because he knew you would protect what he built.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“And Victor spent his entire life trying to take it.””
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
I looked at Grace’s necklace on the floor.
The same necklace she used to wear when she held Lily.
The same necklace that carried the truth.
“Why did Grace hide Emma?””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Because Victor discovered her.””
I swallowed.
“Discovered what?””
“That Emma was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Daniel reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small folder.
“I kept this for seven years.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You kept another secret?””
“Yes.””
Anger rose again.
“But this one I had to.””
“Why?””
“Because if Victor found it, Emma would never have survived.””
He opened the folder.
Inside was a birth certificate.
I looked down.
Then I froze.
The father’s name was listed.
Mine.
Marcus Blackwell.
My hand trembled.
“She wanted you to know.””
Daniel’s voice softened.
“She never doubted you were Emma’s father.””
I looked away.
The pain was overwhelming.
I had spent years believing Grace betrayed me.
That she hid something from me.
But she had been protecting me.
Protecting our children.
I closed my eyes.
“I should have found her.””
Daniel said nothing.
Because there was nothing anyone could say.
A notification appeared on my phone.
A video.
Unknown sender.
My heart stopped.
Victor.
I opened it.
The screen showed a dark room.
Lily was sitting in a chair.
My entire body went cold.
“Daddy.””
Her voice was shaking.
But she wasn’t crying.
That was my daughter.
Brave.
Strong.
Victor stood behind her.
“You see?””
He looked at the camera.
“She’s exactly like Grace.””
I stepped closer to the screen.
“Victor.””
He smiled.
“Hello, Marcus.””
“Where is she?””
“You’re asking the wrong question.””
My jaw tightened.
“Let her go.””
Victor ignored me.
“Do you know what your problem is?””
I didn’t answer.
“You think the truth fixes everything.””
His face hardened.
“But sometimes the truth destroys everything.””
Lily looked at him.
“You’re hurting my daddy.””
Victor looked down.
“No, sweetheart.””
He smiled.
“I’m helping him.””
I felt rage burning through me.
“Don’t talk to her.””
Victor looked back at the camera.
“Seven years ago, Grace made a choice.””
My breathing slowed.
“She chose you.””
The room became silent.
“She chose your children.””
Victor’s expression darkened.
“And she chose to betray me.””
I stared.
“You’re blaming her for protecting her family?””
“No.””
He leaned closer.
“I’m blaming her for stealing mine.””
The sentence confused me.
“What does that mean?””
Victor smiled.
“Ask your mother.””
I froze.
“My mother is dead.””
“Is she?””
The video glitched.
Then another person appeared.
An older woman.
Someone I recognized from old family photographs.
My grandmother.
Impossible.
But alive.
I stepped back.
“No.””
Victor laughed softly.
“Your family has always been better at hiding the dead than the living.””
My grandmother looked into the camera.
Her face was full of shame.
“Marcus…”
I couldn’t speak.
“Your father wanted to tell you.””
Her voice shook.
“But I stopped him.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
She closed her eyes.
“Because Victor was my son.””
Silence.
“And I thought I could fix him.””
The video returned to Victor.
“You see, Marcus?””
He smiled.
“Everyone chose someone.””
He looked at Lily.
“Grace chose you.””
He looked at the camera.
“Your grandmother chose me.””
Then his expression became cold.
“And now you have to choose.””
A file appeared on the screen.
A contract.
A transfer agreement.
My company.
Blackwell Holdings.
Victor continued:
“Sign everything over.””
My blood ran cold.
“Or Lily disappears.””
The video ended.
I stood there frozen.
Daniel looked at me.
“He wants the company.””
“No.””
Daniel frowned.
“No?””
I looked at the screen.
“He wants me to think he wants the company.””
“What do you mean?””
I picked up Grace’s necklace.
The note attached to it.
The words.
*NOW YOU KNOW HOW IT FEELS TO LOSE EVERYTHING.*
I remembered Victor’s face.
His anger.
His obsession.
This was never just about money.
It was personal.
“He doesn’t want Blackwell Holdings.””
Daniel stared at me.
“Then what does he want?””
I looked at the frozen image of Lily.
“He wants me to suffer.””
A message appeared.
One final instruction.
*COME TO HAWTHORNE ALONE.*
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I have to.””
“He wants you angry.””
“He wants me desperate.””
I picked up my coat.
“And he thinks that makes me weak.””
Daniel stepped in front of me.
“Marcus.””
I stopped.
“If you go there alone, you may not come back.””
I looked at him.
Seven years ago, I lost Grace because I trusted the wrong people.
Tonight, I had one chance to save Lily.
“I already lost my wife.””
My voice broke slightly.
“I’m not losing my daughter.””
Daniel stared at me.
Then slowly nodded.
“I’m coming with you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
His expression changed.
“Marcus.””
“You spent seven years protecting Grace’s secret.””
I opened the door.
“Now you’re going to help me expose it.””
Outside, the rain had started.
Just like the night Grace disappeared.
I drove toward Hawthorne.
Toward the place where my family was destroyed.
Toward the truth I should have found years ago.
And as I got closer, my phone received one final message.
A photo.
Grace.
Alive.
Standing beside Victor.
May you like
And beneath it were four words.
*SHE NEVER LEFT ME.*
