Chapter 5: The Brother Who Stole My Family
I had spent my entire life believing I knew my brother.
Alexander Blackwell.
My older brother.
My business partner.
The man who stood beside me when I buried my wife.
The man who held Lily in his arms and promised her that her daddy would always protect her.
Now he was standing ten feet away from me.
And he was holding Emma like she belonged to him.
Like she was a possession.
Not a child.
“Let her go.””
My voice didn’t sound like my own.
Alexander looked at me.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
The years between us disappeared.
I wasn’t looking at the successful businessman who sat across from me in board meetings.
I was looking at the boy who taught me how to ride a bicycle.
The teenager who covered for me when I came home late.
The brother who promised our parents he would always protect me.
Then he tightened his grip on Emma’s arm.
And that memory shattered.
“Marcus,” Alexander said calmly.
“You need to stop.””
My jaw clenched.
“Stop?””
I took another step.
“You’re holding a seven-year-old girl who is terrified of you.””
Alexander looked down at Emma.
“She doesn’t understand what’s happening.””
Emma shook her head.
“I know exactly what’s happening.””
Her voice trembled.
“You’re the man Mommy was scared of.””
The color disappeared from Alexander’s face.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“You told her that?”” he asked.
Emma moved closer to me the second his hand loosened.
I grabbed her and pulled her behind me.
“Don’t touch her again.””
Alexander stared at me.
Something cold passed through his eyes.
“You really think I’m the villain here?””
I laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“I don’t know what to think anymore.””
The park had gone quiet.
People were watching.
My security team was moving into position.
Daniel stood several feet away, frozen.
And Evelyn looked like she had been waiting years for this moment.
Alexander glanced around.
Then smiled slightly.
That smile.
I knew that smile.
It was the one he used when he thought he was smarter than everyone else.
“Still surrounded by people who protect you.””
His eyes moved toward me.
“Do you know what your problem has always been, Marcus?””
I said nothing.
“You think everyone around you loves you because you’re Marcus Blackwell.””
My expression hardened.
“No.””
He looked surprised.
“I think the people who love me do it because I’m not you.””
The smile disappeared.
For the first time, I saw anger.
Real anger.
“You always had everything.””
I stared at him.
“What are you talking about?””
“You were always the golden child.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Our parents left you the company because you earned it.””
He stepped closer.
“I built everything with you.””
“You tried to take it from me.””
“I tried to fix your mistakes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice lowered.
“You wanted my life.””
Alexander looked away.
And that silence told me more than words could.
Behind me, Emma whispered:
“Daddy.””
I looked down.
She was shaking.
“I’m sorry.””
My heart broke.
“For what?””
She looked at Lily.
“I caused trouble.””
Lily immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Emma looked at her.
“You didn’t.””
Lily grabbed her hand.
“You’re my sister.””
The simple certainty in my daughter’s voice almost destroyed me.
Seven years.
Two daughters.
Two lives.
And someone had stolen the chance for them to know each other.
Alexander watched them.
Something unreadable crossed his face.
Regret?
Jealousy?
I couldn’t tell anymore.
“Why?”” I asked him.
He looked at me.
“Why what?””
“Why did you hide her?””
Silence.
Then Alexander answered:
“Because Grace was going to destroy everything.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did you do?””
His eyes narrowed.
“You still think this is about me.””
“Because it is.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“This is about Grace.””
I stepped closer.
“Don’t say her name.””
His expression changed.
“She lied to you.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You don’t get to talk about her.””
“She never told you about Emma.””
His voice became sharper.
“She never told you why she needed protection.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
Alexander looked toward Evelyn.
“She didn’t tell him?””
Evelyn said nothing.
And that scared me.
Alexander smiled.
“Of course she didn’t.””
I looked between them.
“What aren’t you telling me?””
Nobody answered.
The silence was unbearable.
Finally, Alexander spoke.
“Grace wasn’t running from me.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Then who?””
His expression became serious.
“She was running from someone who wanted you dead.””
The words stopped me.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I expect you to remember what happened seven years ago.””
I said nothing.
“Your car was supposed to be at Hawthorne that night.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
Alexander continued.
“Not Grace’s.””
A terrible silence followed.
The pieces started moving.
The accident.
The location.
The timing.
The secrets.
“No.””
Alexander looked at me.
“Yes.””
He swallowed.
“Someone was trying to kill you.””
My voice became quiet.
“Then why was Grace there?””
His eyes darkened.
“Because she found out.””
The world tilted.
“She knew?””
“She found evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Alexander looked toward Daniel.
And Daniel looked away.
That was when everything clicked.
Daniel.
Grace’s warning.
The phone call.
The hidden video.
The missing years.
“You all knew.””
Nobody spoke.
My anger rose.
“You all knew something was happening to my family, and nobody told me.””
Alexander looked almost tired.
“You weren’t ready.””
I stepped forward.
“You don’t get to decide that.””
A sound came from behind me.
A car door closing.
I turned.
Evelyn was standing beside the black SUV.
Her face had changed.
Fear.
Pure fear.
“Marcus.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed inside the vehicle.
“There’s something you need to see.””
My instincts screamed not to move.
But I walked closer.
Inside the SUV was a small bag.
Emma’s bag.
I recognized it immediately.
A pink backpack with a broken zipper.
Emma’s only possession.
“What is this?””
Evelyn opened it.
Inside was a small notebook.
A photograph.
And an envelope.
My name was written on it.
Again.
Grace’s handwriting.
My hands trembled as I picked it up.
“Where did you get this?””
Evelyn looked at Alexander.
“He had it.””
I turned.
Alexander’s face went pale.
“You kept her letters?””
I couldn’t believe it.
Seven years.
Seven years of lies.
Seven years of searching for answers.
And my brother had been carrying pieces of Grace’s final days.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
*Marcus,*
*If Alexander gives this to you, it means he finally chose the truth over his fear.*
I stopped.
I looked at Alexander.
His face was unreadable.
I continued reading.
*There is something I never told you because I was afraid you would try to save me.*
My heart tightened.
*The night of the accident, I discovered who was behind everything.*
A tear blurred the words.
Then the final sentence appeared.
*Marcus, the person who betrayed us wasn’t Alexander.*
I looked up.
Everyone was silent.
My eyes returned to the page.
The next words were written shakily.
*It was someone closer. Someone who knew every secret in our home.*
A sound came from behind me.
Daniel.
A sharp inhale.
Like he already knew what was coming.
I slowly turned.
“Daniel.””
He didn’t answer.
“Why did Grace write your name?””
His face changed.
And for the first time, the man who had protected me for twelve years looked afraid.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And I saw the name.
The name that made my blood turn cold.
*Grace Blackwell.*
Daniel looked at me.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because Grace had been dead for seven years.
May you like
And somehow…
She was calling.
