Chapter 7: The Secret Hidden Inside Grace's Necklace

The necklace felt heavier than it should have.

It was only a small piece of silver.

A tiny pendant that Grace wore almost every day.

I had seen it countless times.

At breakfast.

At family dinners.

On vacations.

In the hospital room where I last held her hand.

I remembered touching it after she died.

I remembered the funeral.

I remembered placing my wedding ring beside her photograph because I couldn’t accept that I was saying goodbye to my wife.

And now it was in my hand.

Alive with a secret.

A secret Grace had hidden for seven years.

“Daddy?””

Lily’s voice brought me back.

She was staring at the necklace.

“Is that Mommy’s?””

I looked at my daughter.

Her eyes were filled with questions.

Questions no seven-year-old should have to ask.

“Yes.””

“Why does Emma have it?””

I looked at Emma.

The little girl who had been carrying pieces of my broken past without understanding them.

“Because your mother wanted me to have it.””

Lily looked confused.

“But Mommy is gone.””

The sentence hurt more than anything else.

Because it was the truth she had lived with.

The truth I gave her.

I knelt down.

“Lily…”

I stopped.

What could I say?

That everything I told her about her mother might be wrong?

That Grace had been alive?

That another child had been hidden from us?

That someone had tried to hurt our family?

I couldn’t put that weight on her.

Not yet.

I touched her hair.

“Your mommy loved you more than anything.””

Lily nodded slowly.

“I know.””

Then she looked at Emma.

“Did she love you too?””

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

A small smile appeared on her face.

“She talked about you all the time.””

Lily looked down.

“What did she say?””

Emma hugged Captain Bear.

“She said you were brave.””

My daughter smiled faintly.

“She was right.””

For a moment, they looked like what they should have always been.

Sisters.

Not strangers.

I stood.

“Robert.””

My security guard stepped forward.

“Yes, sir?””

“Take the girls to the car.””

Lily immediately looked at me.

“You’re coming too?””

I forced a smile.

“I’ll be right behind you.””

She studied my face.

She knew when I was hiding something.

Grace’s daughter.

A piece of Grace still living inside her.

“Promise?””

I swallowed.

“Promise.””

When they walked away, I turned toward the others.

Daniel.

Evelyn.

Alexander.

Three people who knew parts of the truth I had spent seven years searching for.

Three people who had decided what I deserved to know.

I held up the necklace.

“We’re opening this.””

Nobody spoke.

We went to a private room at my company’s security building.

Not my office.

Not my home.

I no longer knew who I could trust.

That realization hurt more than I expected.

The man who built a billion-dollar empire suddenly felt like he had nowhere safe to stand.

Daniel placed the memory card into a secure reader.

The screen lit up.

One file appeared.

No title.

No date.

Just one word.

*MARCUS.*

My chest tightened.

I pressed play.

Grace appeared.

Again.

But this time, she wasn’t crying.

She looked calm.

Determined.

Like the woman I fell in love with.

“Marcus.””

Her voice filled the room.

“If you are watching this, then I know you found Emma.””

I closed my eyes.

Hearing her say my name almost broke me.

“I know you’re angry.””

A pause.

“I know you feel betrayed.””

My hands tightened.

She knew me too well.

“But please understand something.””

Her expression softened.

“Every lie I told was because I loved you.””

The room was silent.

Even Daniel looked away.

Grace continued.

“When I discovered I was pregnant with Emma, I was terrified.””

I looked at Emma’s photo on the table.

“I wanted to tell you immediately.””

Her eyes filled.

“But then I found the first threat.””

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

A handwritten note.

*YOU CAN’T PROTECT BOTH CHILDREN.*

My stomach twisted.

Grace’s voice continued.

“Someone knew about Emma before I even told you.””

The image changed.

Another note.

*ONE DAUGHTER IS ENOUGH.*

My hands curled into fists.

“Who sent those?””

Grace looked back at the camera.

“I didn’t know at first.””

A pause.

“Then I found the financial records.””

The screen showed documents.

Blackwell Holdings.

Transfers.

Hidden accounts.

Names.

I leaned closer.

Then I saw it.

A company I recognized.

A company connected to one person.

Alexander.

I looked at my brother.

His face was pale.

“Explain.””

Alexander didn’t speak.

Grace’s video continued.

“Marcus, I need you to understand. Alexander was involved, but he wasn’t the one controlling everything.””

My eyes moved back to the screen.

The room changed.

Because the person I expected to see wasn’t there.

The person Grace named next was someone else.

“I traced the money to the person who had access to every part of our lives.””

The video paused.

Then Grace said:

“Daniel.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel closed his eyes.

I looked at him.

The pain on his face told me enough.

But not everything.

Grace continued.

“I know what you’re thinking.””

Her voice became softer.

“You’re wondering how the man who protected us could betray us.””

Daniel looked down.

“Because he didn’t.””

I froze.

“What?””

Grace looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel was investigating the person behind everything.””

The room went silent.

My eyes moved between Grace’s recording and Daniel.

“He discovered the truth before I did.””

Grace continued.

“And that made him a target too.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I tried to tell you.””

I ignored him.

My attention stayed on Grace.

“Marcus, the person behind this was someone neither of us suspected.””

The screen flickered.

A document appeared.

A name.

I stared.

Then my blood went cold.

Because it wasn’t Alexander.

It wasn’t Daniel.

It was someone else.

Someone closer.

Someone who had attended Grace’s funeral.

Someone who had held Lily’s hand.

Someone who had comforted me while secretly knowing the truth.

The name appeared.

*VICTOR BLACKWELL.*

My father.

Except…

My father had died three years before Grace.

I stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

Grace’s voice continued.

“Your father didn’t die from natural causes, Marcus.””

The room became colder.

“He was trying to expose the same person.””

I stared at the screen.

My entire family history shifted.

My father.

Grace.

Emma.

The accident.

Everything connected to a secret I never knew existed.

Then Grace said the words that destroyed me.

“The person who arranged the accident wasn’t trying to kill me.””

A pause.

“They were trying to erase the last evidence.””

The video glitched.

Grace looked frightened for the first time.

“Marcus, listen carefully.””

Her voice dropped.

“If this recording reaches you, then they already know Emma is with you.””

I looked toward the security cameras.

Suddenly, every instinct I had built over years activated.

Something was wrong.

Grace continued.

“Do not go home.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO GRACE.*

Then another message appeared.

A photograph.

My house.

Taken moments ago.

My heart stopped.

Because in the picture, Lily was standing at the front door.

And someone was behind her.

Holding a knife.

I dropped the phone.

May you like

“Lily.””

I ran.
