Chapter 8 - THE REVERSAL

I sat in my car, staring at the documents on my lap, and felt the ground shift beneath me. What I had thought was a custody battle was actually a cover-up. Ryan wasn’t fighting to protect Noah from me—he was fighting to protect himself from the truth.

If Lucas had died because of Diane… and Ryan had watched… and then they had framed his father… then Noah was never safe with them. He was never being “rescued” from me. He was being taken to be raised the same way. To become the next link in a terrible chain.

I pulled out my phone and called Ryan.

He answered on the second ring.

“Emily,” he said, calm and smug. “I was wondering when you’d call.”

“What happened to Lucas?”

Silence on the line. Complete, dead silence.

“Answer me,” I said. “Your brother. Lucas. What happened to him?”

“Who told you about Lucas?” His voice had dropped an octave. Hard. Dangerous.

“I found the records. I found the drowning. I found how you took everything from your father after he died.”

“Those are old family matters,” Ryan said, his tone sharpening. “None of your concern.”

“He was your brother, Ryan. And now you’re doing the exact same thing to me. To Noah. Why?”

“Because it works,” he said simply. No hesitation. No remorse. “My father was weak. He couldn’t handle what we had. Mother taught me: you don’t let anyone take what is yours. You eliminate the threat before it grows.”

“And I’m the threat?”

“You’re digging into things that will get you hurt, Emily. Walk away. Sign the papers. And I might let you visit him.”

“Or what?” I challenged. “Will you drown me too? Make it look like an accident? Just like Lucas?”

Ryan laughed. It was a cold, hollow sound. “You think you’re clever. But you have no proof. Just like my father had no proof. By the time anyone believes you… it will be too late.”

“Too late for what?”

“Too late for you. Too late for Noah. Everything is already set in motion. The evaluation. The restraining order. The witnesses. You will be the one who looks dangerous. You will be the one erased.”

He hung up.

I sat there, heart pounding, and realized something terrifying. I had thought knowing the truth would give me power. It hadn’t. It had only made me a bigger target. Ryan wasn’t running from me. He was letting me dig. Because he knew no one would believe me without proof. And he had already arranged for me to be the one labeled delusional.

Everything I had learned about Lucas… every accusation I could make… would simply be added to his file as further proof of my paranoia.

I had walked right into his trap.
