Chapter 13 - THE PAST RETURNS

I drove straight to the police station. Mr. Carter met me there. Together, we laid everything out: the pill bottle, Diane’s written confession, the audio recording, the witness testimony from the neighbor.
The officers listened. They took the evidence. They called Ryan and Diane in for questioning.
By morning, the world had turned upside down.
Diane had been taken into custody. Ryan had been barred from seeing Noah. The doctor’s recommendation had been suspended pending investigation.
And then… the real shock came.
One of the detectives pulled me aside late that afternoon. He looked at me with a strange expression.
“We ran everything through the system,” he said. “The papers you brought… the names… the dates… something turned up.”
“What is it?”
“There was a witness to Lucas’s death. Not just the neighbor. A social worker was assigned to the case after the father’s complaints. She wrote a report saying she believed the boy was murdered. But then she vanished. The report was filed away. Ignored.”
“Vanished?”
“Disappeared six months later. Car accident. Never found.” He leaned forward. “But… she left something behind. A sealed envelope. Instructions to open it only if Diane or Ryan Hale were ever accused of harming a child.”
My heart stopped. “Where is it?”
He handed me a thick, sealed envelope. On the front, in faded ink: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN — THE TRUTH ABOUT LUCAS HALE.

I opened it with trembling hands.
Inside was the full, unvarnished truth. Written by the social worker twenty years earlier.
