Chapter 13 - THE PAST RETURNS (CONTINUED)

Inside was the full, unvarnished truth. Written by the social worker twenty years earlier.

“I went to the house three days after Lucas died. Diane was composed. Too composed. She spoke of her dead son as if he were a stranger’s child. Ryan, only seven years old, sat on the floor playing quietly while his mother spoke. Every time I asked a question about the pool, Ryan would glance at Diane first. Then he would speak exactly the words she had told him to say. ‘He fell in. I was inside.’ Not once did he cry. Not once did he show fear. Not until I gave him a stuffed bear to hold. Then… his hands began to shake. He whispered one word. ‘Cold.’ I asked him what he meant. Diane stood up instantly and told me the interview was over. That was when I knew. Lucas did not fall. He was held down. And Ryan was forced to watch. And then he was taught to lie. I believe Diane killed Lucas because he was becoming too much like his father—questioning, resisting, refusing to obey. She kept Ryan because she could mold him. She could make him strong. She could make him do exactly what she said. And if anyone ever tries to take a child from her… or from Ryan… they will be destroyed exactly the way Lucas was. If you are reading this… it means history is repeating itself. Do not let them erase another child.”

I lowered the pages, my hands trembling so hard I could barely hold them. Twenty years. This truth had been locked away, waiting for someone to believe it. Waiting for me.

The detective watched me carefully. “This changes everything. But it also means something else.”

“That they won’t stop,” I said quietly. “That they will do anything to keep this buried.”

“Exactly. Diane is in custody. But Ryan is still out there. And he knows exactly what is at stake.”

I looked at the words again. Do not let them erase another child.

Noah was safe with me for now. But Ryan was still free. Still planning. Still watching.
