Chapter 17 - THE FINAL PROTECTION

In the weeks that followed, Elara stayed true to her word. She moved into town. She checked in regularly. She watched from the shadows, just as Claire had asked.

And slowly, quietly… the danger faded.

The strangers watching our house disappeared. The suspicious cars stopped appearing. The strange phone calls ended.

Word had spread. There was no ledger. There never had been. Claire had invented it all. And everyone who had hunted for it had been chasing a ghost.

One evening, Elara came to the house. We sat on the porch as the sun set. Sophie was inside, reading quietly.

Elara handed me a final letter.

“Claire left this for when it was truly over. For when Sophie was safe. For when you could finally rest.”

I opened it. Her handwriting. Her voice. Her love.

*My dearest Adrian,*

*If you are reading this, then it is done. Every threat has passed. Every danger has faded. And Sophie is safe.*

*I am sorry I did not tell you about Elara. I am sorry I kept one last secret. But I needed you to fight with everything you had. And I needed one final safeguard that no one knew existed.*

*You have protected her bravely. You have loved her faithfully. And now… you are free. Free to live. Free to laugh. Free to raise our daughter without fear.*

*Do not carry the weight of the past. Do not carry the burden of my secrets. Bury them all with me at the river. And build a life of light and joy in their place.*

*Tell Sophie I loved her until my very last breath. And tell her… that love is the only treasure that can never be stolen, never be destroyed, and never truly be lost.*

*Live well, my love. Be happy. And remember… I am always with you.*

*Claire.*

I folded the letter gently. I placed it alongside all the others. Beside the medal. Beside the locket. Beside every piece of her she had left behind.

I walked inside. Sophie looked up from her book.

“Daddy?”

I sat beside her and took her hand.

“It is all over now, sweetheart. Every bad thing. Every fear. We are truly safe.”

Sophie smiled—a bright, brilliant smile that lit up the whole room.

“Because Mommy is watching over us?”

I touched the medal resting gently at her neck.

“Yes. Because she is always watching. And because she loved us enough to prepare us for everything.”

Sophie leaned her head against my shoulder.

May you like

“I miss her.”

“I miss her too,” I whispered. “But she gave us the greatest gift of all. She gave us each other. And she gave us peace.”
