Chapter 16 - THE STRANGER WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

I arrived before dawn. Standing beneath the new bridge, the medal clutched in my hand, my heart pounding against my ribs.

A car pulled up. The engine cut. A woman stepped out. Tall. Graceful. Her eyes kind and weary.

And beside her, holding her hand, was Sophie.

“Daddy!”

Sophie broke free and ran. I caught her mid-stride, lifting her into my arms, burying my face in her hair, breathing in her scent, trembling from head to toe.

“You are safe,” I whispered over and over. “You are safe. You are safe.”

“I was never scared,” Sophie said, resting her head on my shoulder. “She told me stories about Mommy. She knew everything.”

I looked up at the woman. She stood quietly, watching us with tears in her eyes.

“I am Elara,” she said softly. “Claire was my cousin. My oldest friend. We grew up together. She told me everything. Long before she became ill.”

She gestured toward the river.

“She knew people would come looking. Even after she was gone. Even after Julian was locked away. There were others. People who believed the ledger was real. People who would never stop searching. So she asked me to be her final safeguard. To watch. To wait. And to take Sophie away if I ever believed she was truly in danger.”

I looked at her. “And you believed that day had come?”

Elara nodded.

“Someone was watching the school. Someone was watching your home. They were waiting for a mistake. For a moment alone. Claire told me: if ever they felt close… take her. Hide her. And wait until they lose interest.”

She stepped closer.

“Claire did not want to frighten you. She did not want you living in fear. So she told only me. She said you were strong enough to protect her against anything… except the things you did not know existed.”

I thought of all the times I had felt watched. All the strange cars. All the quiet footsteps. Claire had known. She had seen it coming. And she had prepared one final protection.

I looked at the medal in my hand.

“She left this,” I said. “To keep Sophie safe.”

Elara touched it gently.

“She left everything. Every plan. Every letter. Every warning. She prepared for every possibility. Because she loved you both more than she feared death.”

Sophie looked up at me.

“Can we go home now, Daddy?”

I kissed her forehead.

“Yes, baby. We can go home.”

I turned back to Elara.

“Will they come back?” I asked.

May you like

Elara looked toward the rushing water.

“Eventually… they will realize the ledger never existed. They will realize Claire outsmarted them all. And then… they will walk away. Until then… I will stay close. And I will watch. Just as she asked.”
