Chapter 8: The Woman Who Escaped Julian’s Plan

The phone felt heavier than it should have.

My hand was shaking.

My breathing was uneven.

But I couldn’t move.

Because the voice on the other end belonged to someone who existed only in old photographs.

Someone my parents had spoken about in the past tense.

Someone I believed was gone.

“My aunt,” I whispered.

Arthur nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I pressed the phone closer.

“Where have you been?””

The woman on the other end took a shaky breath.

“Somewhere Julian couldn’t find me.””

My stomach tightened.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I looked at Arthur.

“At first, I thought it was just a phrase.””

My voice hardened.

“But now I need someone to explain what is actually happening.””

The woman was silent for a moment.

Then she said:

“My name is Claire Hart.””

My heart stopped.

Not because of the name.

Because of the emotion behind it.

She wasn’t a stranger.

She was family.

“I was your father’s younger sister.””

I closed my eyes.

Images came back.

My father looking at old family photos.

My mother refusing to discuss certain relatives.

Questions I had asked as a child.

Questions adults always avoided.

“Why did I never know about you?””

Claire’s voice broke.

“Because your father thought knowing me would put you in danger.””

I almost laughed.

A painful, empty sound.

“Everyone says they were protecting me.””

“I know.””

“But nobody protected me.””

The silence afterward was painful.

Then my aunt said:

“You’re right.””

Again.

Another person admitting I had been right.

But it didn’t fix anything.

“What happened?”” I asked.

“Why did you disappear?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Because I found out what Julian was planning.””

I looked at Arthur.

“Before my wedding?””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“How?””

“Your father contacted me after he discovered Julian was trying to access company information.””

I walked toward the window.

The night outside was dark.

“Why didn’t my father tell me?””

“Because he thought he had time.””

“Time for what?””

“To separate Julian from your life.””

The words hit me.

“He wanted me to leave him?””

“Yes.””

I swallowed.

“Why didn’t he?””

Claire’s voice became softer.

“Because you were pregnant.””

My hand moved to my stomach instinctively.

Leo.

Before Leo was born.

My father had known.

My father had known I was building a family with a man he didn’t trust.

“He thought if he forced you to choose, you would choose Julian.””

I looked down.

“And he was right.””

“Yes.””

That hurt.

Because it was true.

I would have.

I loved Julian.

I would have defended him.

I would have told everyone they were wrong.

Claire continued.

“Your father decided to gather proof instead.””

“What proof?””

“Proof that Julian wasn’t just interested in the company.””

“What else?””

“That he was working with someone else.””

The room became cold.

“Who?””

My aunt hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I knew the name once.””

“Once?””

“Julian found out I had information.””

My heart raced.

“What happened?””

“I was threatened.””

Arthur stepped closer.

“Threatened by Julian?””

“No.””

Her answer came quietly.

“By the people behind him.””

The room fell silent.

I looked at Arthur.

Even he looked surprised.

“People behind him?””

Claire continued.

“Evelyn, Julian was never powerful enough to create all of this alone.””

I thought about his company.

His success.

His confidence.

The way people respected him.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Julian was a man with ambition.””

A pause.

“But someone gave him the tools.””

My fingers tightened.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then why come back now?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Because I found something.””

“What?””

“The original trust agreement.””

My heart stopped.

The document everyone wanted.

The one Julian had spent years searching for.

“You have it?””

“Yes.””

Arthur stepped forward.

“Where?””

Claire didn’t answer.

Instead, she asked:

“Is Arthur there?””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

Arthur looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because your father trusted him.””

Arthur lowered his eyes.

The words affected him.

Claire continued.

“Evelyn, listen carefully.””

“I’m listening.””

“Do not go home.””

The sentence froze me.

“What?””

“Do not return to the house Julian owns.””

I felt anger rising.

“It was my home too.””

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“I spent eighteen years there.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you telling me to stay away?””

“Because Julian wants you there.””

The anger disappeared.

“What?””

“He knows you’re emotional. He knows you’ll want to reclaim what was taken.””

I said nothing.

Because she was right.

Part of me wanted to walk back into that house.

Open the door.

Stand in the living room.

Tell Julian I wasn’t powerless anymore.

Claire continued.

“That house contains something.””

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“But you think Julian does?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Arthur.

“What could it be?””

He shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

My aunt spoke again.

“Evelyn, your father created the trust because he knew Julian would eventually try to take control.””

“But he couldn’t.””

“Not without your cooperation.””

The words hurt.

Because I remembered every signature.

Every document.

Every time Julian said:

“Just sign here.””

“You don’t need to worry about this.””

“I’ll handle it.””

I had handed him the weapon.

Claire said:

“That’s why he waited.””

“For what?””

“For you to stop questioning him.””

I closed my eyes.

“And he almost succeeded.””

“Yes.””

A silence followed.

Then Claire said:

“There is something else you need to know.””

“What?””

“Vanessa.””

My stomach tightened.

“What about her?””

“She wasn’t the first woman.””

The room froze.

“What?””

Arthur looked at me.

I could barely breathe.

Claire continued.

“Julian has been building a public image for years.””

“What does that have to do with women?””

“He needed witnesses.””

“Witnesses?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

“To prove you were distant.””

I felt sick.

“He created evidence.””

“Yes.””

“Against me.””

“Yes.””

The cruelty of it was almost impossible to understand.

He didn’t just betray me.

He documented it.

He created a story where he was the victim.

Where I was the wife who abandoned him.

Where he had no choice.

I whispered:

“How long?””

Claire answered:

“Six years.””

The same number.

Again.

“Six years ago, what happened?””

My aunt became quiet.

Then:

“Your father’s final investigation was completed.””

My heart raced.

“What investigation?””

“Into Julian.””

I waited.

“And?””

“He discovered Julian planned to remove you legally.””

“How?””

“By proving you had no real involvement in the company.””

I laughed softly.

“He planned to erase me.””

“Yes.””

“Why wait six years?””

“Because he needed one thing.””

“What?””

“Your children.””

My entire body went still.

“What?””

Claire’s voice was filled with sadness.

“He needed your life to look complete without the company.””

I didn’t understand.

“He wanted people to believe you chose motherhood over ownership.””

A chill moved through me.

“He used my children?””

“No.””

Her voice became firm.

“He used the fact that you loved them.””

The words hurt because they were true.

I had chosen my children.

And I would choose them again.

But Julian had turned my greatest love into his greatest weapon.

Then Claire said:

“Evelyn, there is one more thing.””

“What?””

“The original agreement contains a clause your father added.””

“What clause?””

“If Julian ever attempts to remove you from your own company…”

I waited.

“…ownership automatically transfers back to you completely.””

I stared.

“Completely?””

“Yes.””

Arthur looked at me.

“So Julian’s divorce isn’t just a divorce.””

Claire answered:

“No.””

Her voice became quiet.

“It’s a trigger.””

My heart pounded.

“A trigger for what?””

“The moment Julian tried to leave you with nothing…”

A pause.

“He activated the one thing he spent eighteen years trying to prevent.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

My aunt whispered:

“He lost control.””

The call ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Arthur looked at me.

“Evelyn.””

I turned.

“What?””

He pointed toward the documents.

“Julian thought the divorce would destroy you.””

I stared at the papers.

“But he may have done the opposite.””

My phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Julian.

I opened it.

Only one sentence.

*You spoke to my sister.*

My blood ran cold.

Not aunt.

Sister.

I looked at Arthur.

“How did he know?””

Another message arrived.

*Now you finally understand why I couldn’t let you find out.*

Then a third.

*But you still don’t know the worst part.*

I stared at the screen.

A final message appeared.

*Your father didn’t die because of what he created.*

My fingers went numb.

May you like

Then the last line appeared.

*He died because he tried to expose me.*
