Chapter 7: The Divorce Plan Hidden For Six Years

I held the phone so tightly my fingers hurt.

Vanessa’s words kept replaying in my mind.

*Julian planned your divorce six years ago.*

Not last month.

Not when he met her.

Six years.

The number felt impossible.

Six years ago, I was forty-two.

Leo was one year old.

Nora hadn’t even been born yet.

Six years ago, Julian still kissed me goodbye every morning.

Six years ago, he still told me I was the reason he could do everything he did.

Six years ago, I was standing beside him at charity dinners, smiling for cameras, believing we had built a life together.

And all that time, he had been planning how to destroy me.

“Where is the file?”” I asked.

My voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

Vanessa hesitated.

“I don’t have it anymore.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

“I took pictures.””

“Send them.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

A long silence.

Then she said:

“Because Julian knows I found it.””

Everyone in the room went still.

Arthur stepped closer.

“Vanessa, where are you?””

She ignored him.

“Evelyn, you need to listen carefully.””

“I’m listening.””

“He has been preparing for this for years.””

My throat tightened.

“Preparing what?””

“To remove every connection you have to the company.””

Claire moved closer and signaled for me to put the call on speaker.

I did.

Vanessa continued.

“He created a timeline.””

“A timeline?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

“To make it look like you were never involved.””

I frowned.

“How?””

“He documented every time you stayed home with the children. Every time you didn’t attend meetings. Every time you signed something without reading it.””

The room became silent.

I felt sick.

“He was building a case.””

“Yes.””

“Against his own wife.””

Vanessa’s voice softened.

“I’m sorry.””

I almost laughed.

Sorry.

Everyone was sorry.

My parents.

Arthur.

Margaret.

Vanessa.

But sorry couldn’t give me back eighteen years.

Sorry couldn’t erase the nights I spent believing I was failing because I wasn’t earning money.

Sorry couldn’t explain why the man I loved had been collecting evidence against me.

“Why are you telling me this now?”” I asked.

Vanessa took a breath.

“Because I realized something.””

“What?””

“He never loved me either.””

The words surprised me.

I said nothing.

“He didn’t leave you for me.””

She sounded broken.

“He used me because he needed everyone to believe you were the problem.””

Arthur’s expression hardened.

“She’s telling the truth.””

I looked at him.

“How do you know?””

“Because that’s exactly what Julian does.””

I looked back at the phone.

“Where are you?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Somewhere he can’t find me.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Her voice dropped.

“It isn’t.””

Then the call ended.

I stared at the screen.

“She hung up.””

Claire nodded.

“She’s scared.””

“So am I.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Nobody judged me.

Because everyone in that room understood.

For the first time in my life, I was fighting something I couldn’t see.

A person who had spent years preparing for my downfall.

That afternoon, Claire helped us organize everything.

Every document.

Every message.

Every memory.

She asked questions I had never thought about.

“Did Julian ever ask you to sign documents related to the company?””

“Yes.””

“How often?””

“Several times a year.””

“Did you keep copies?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Claire looked at Arthur.

“He counted on that.””

I looked down.

“I trusted my husband.””

Claire’s expression softened.

“And he exploited that trust.””

I didn’t answer.

Because saying it aloud made it real.

Later that evening, Arthur found me sitting alone in the garden.

The sun was setting.

Leo was asleep upstairs.

Nora was curled up beside him, refusing to sleep unless she held his hand.

“They look peaceful,” Arthur said.

I smiled sadly.

“They don’t know what’s happening.””

“Maybe that’s a good thing.””

I looked at him.

“You know what hurts the most?””

“What?””

“I keep thinking about all the moments I missed.””

Arthur sat beside me.

“What moments?””

“The signs.””

I looked at the trees.

“There were so many times I could have asked questions.””

“Evelyn.””

“I should have noticed.””

Arthur shook his head.

“No.””

“I should have known.””

“No.””

His voice became firmer.

“You were living your life. You were raising your children. You were loving your husband.””

I looked at him.

“That made me weak.””

“No.””

He paused.

“It made you human.””

For some reason, that almost broke me.

I had spent three days feeling embarrassed.

Feeling foolish.

Feeling like everyone must think I was a woman who let herself be destroyed.

But Arthur didn’t look at me that way.

He looked at me like someone who had survived something.

The next morning, Claire arrived with news.

Not good news.

Not bad news.

Something worse.

Complicated.

“Julian filed.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

“The lawsuit.””

Arthur stood.

“When?””

“Early this morning.””

I looked at her.

“That fast?””

“Yes.””

“What is he claiming?””

Claire placed the documents down.

“Fraud.””

I stared.

“Fraud?””

“He claims you misrepresented your involvement in the company.””

I almost laughed.

“He’s accusing me of lying about something I didn’t even know?””

“Yes.””

“That’s insane.””

Claire nodded.

“It is.””

“Then why file it?””

“To create pressure.””

I understood.

He didn’t need to win immediately.

He needed to make me tired.

Afraid.

Willing to give up.

“What happens now?””

Claire looked at me.

“Now we fight back.””

The word felt strange.

Fight.

I had never been someone who fought.

I negotiated.

I compromised.

I forgave.

That was how I survived marriage.

But this wasn’t a marriage anymore.

This was war.

That night, I received another message.

This time from Julian.

*You don’t understand what you’re doing.*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

*You think Arthur is helping you because he cares.*

I frowned.

A third message.

*Ask him why he never told you the truth.*

My heart slowed.

I looked toward Arthur’s study.

Why would Julian say that?

I walked downstairs.

Arthur was reviewing documents.

He looked up.

“What happened?””

I showed him the messages.

His face changed.

“What?””

“He says you never told me the truth.””

Arthur looked away.

And that was enough.

I felt a cold feeling in my chest.

“Arthur.””

He didn’t answer.

“What didn’t you tell me?””

Silence.

I stood there.

“Arthur.””

Finally, he spoke.

“Your father asked me to protect you.””

I waited.

“And?””

His eyes met mine.

“I failed.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Arthur walked to the window.

“After your parents died, I found evidence that Julian had been investigating your family.””

My breath stopped.

“And you knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because your father’s final request was clear.””

“What?””

Arthur’s voice broke slightly.

“He told me if anything happened to him, I was never to tell you until you were ready.””

I stared.

“Ready?””

“Yes.””

“That’s not your decision to make.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Arthur looked at me.

“Because I was afraid.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Of what?””

“That Julian would hurt you.””

I shook my head.

“He already did.””

Arthur closed his eyes.

“I know.””

The anger inside me rose.

“You all decided what was best for me.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I pointed at the documents.

“My parents. You. Julian.””

My voice shook.

“Everyone protected me by keeping me powerless.””

Arthur looked like I had hit him.

Because maybe I had.

And maybe he deserved it.

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

Because the caller ID showed a name neither of us expected.

A name connected to my past.

A name that had been missing for eighteen years.

Arthur slowly answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

And the moment he heard it, he stood.

“Where have you been?””

I moved closer.

“Who is that?””

Arthur looked at me.

His face had gone pale.

Then he whispered:

“Evelyn…”

The woman spoke again.

Arthur listened.

Then he handed me the phone.

My hands shook as I took it.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a trembling voice said:

“Evelyn?””

I froze.

Nobody had called me by that voice in eighteen years.

Because the woman on the other end was supposed to be dead.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“It’s your aunt.””

My heart stopped.

“My father’s sister?””

“Yes.””

I couldn’t speak.

She cried quietly.

“I’m sorry I stayed away.””

My voice trembled.

“Why?””

The answer came softly.

“Because Julian told me you didn’t want to know the truth.””

I felt the world tilt.

“He what?””

Then my aunt said the words that changed everything.

“Evelyn, Julian has been lying to you since the day you met him.””

May you like

A pause.

“And I know exactly why he chose you.””
