Chapter 9: What Michael Buried In The Wall
The basement smelled exactly the same as it had for years.
Old wood.
Dust.
The faint scent of paint from the shelves Michael built himself.
I stood at the bottom of the stairs holding a flashlight.
David stood beside me.
Martin followed behind.
None of us spoke.
Because we all understood.
Whatever we found down there had been hidden for a reason.
Michael never did anything without a purpose.
I moved the flashlight across the walls.
“There.””
David pointed.
I looked.
Nothing.
Just concrete.
“What?””
“That section looks newer.””
I walked closer.
He was right.
One part of the basement wall had been painted differently.
Almost impossible to notice.
Unless you knew where to look.
My hands trembled.
“Dad did this.””
David looked at me.
“How do you know?””
“Because he was the only person who cared enough about details like this.””
Martin stepped forward.
“We need to be careful.””
David grabbed a small tool from the workbench.
“You think there’s actually something behind it?””
Martin looked at him.
“I think Michael wanted Kimberly to find something.””
The three of us worked quietly.
After several minutes, a small piece of the panel moved.
David stopped.
“Mom.””
I stepped closer.
Behind the wall was a narrow compartment.
Inside was a metal box.
My breath caught.
Michael’s name was engraved on the top.
I reached for it.
For a moment, I couldn’t open it.
Because opening it felt like opening the last secret my husband had kept from me.
Finally, I lifted the lid.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
A small flash drive.
And one envelope.
My name was written on it.
Again.
Kimberly.
I sat down on the basement steps.
Martin handed me the letter.
I opened it.
If you found this, then someone has challenged what belongs to you.
I closed my eyes.
Michael knew.
He knew this day might come.
I hope I am wrong. I hope no one ever makes you question your place in the home we built.
I wiped my eyes.
Then continued.
But if they do, I need you to know the truth.
I looked at the next page.
And my heart stopped.
Richard was never fighting for the house.
I looked up.
“What?””
David leaned closer.
“What does it say?””
I kept reading.
He was fighting because he believed he deserved control over everything I had built.
My fingers shook.
Then I reached the next line.
But there is someone else you need to be careful of.
I froze.
Someone else?
I read the name.
And the basement suddenly felt colder.
David.
I stopped breathing.
My son looked at me.
“What?””
I couldn’t speak.
Martin took the letter.
His eyes moved quickly.
Then he looked at David.
I handed it back.
David read silently.
His face changed.
“No.””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“No, that can’t be right.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He looked at the paper.
“Dad thought I would do this?””
I took the letter.
Michael’s words continued.
My son loves us. I believe that. But David has always trusted the wrong people. He wants to be good, but he is easily convinced by those who promise him an easier path.
My heart broke.
Because Michael wasn’t accusing David.
He was warning me.
If anyone uses David’s love for family against him, remind him who he truly is.
I looked at my son.
He was crying.
“I was so stupid.””
I shook my head.
“David.””
“No.””
He wiped his face.
“He knew me better than I knew myself.””
Nobody spoke.
Then I picked up the flash drive.
“What’s this?””
Martin looked at it.
“Probably evidence.””
David stared.
“Of what?””
I plugged it into my laptop upstairs.
The first file appeared.
A recording.
The date was from one month before Michael died.
I clicked play.
At first, there was silence.
Then Michael’s voice.
My entire body froze.
Because I hadn’t heard that voice in six years.
“Richard, this is the last time I’m saying this.””
A second voice answered.
Richard.
“You think Kimberly will keep everything forever?””
Michael replied calmly.
“She earned it.””
Richard laughed.
“She’s not a Porter.””
A pause.
Then Michael said something that made my eyes fill.
“She doesn’t need your name to belong.””
The recording continued.
But I barely heard the rest.
Because one thing was clear.
Michael had known exactly what Richard was capable of.
And he had prepared for it.
Then another file appeared.
The title made my blood run cold.
*Sarah Porter.*
I looked at David.
He looked back at me.
Neither of us moved.
Because suddenly, we weren’t just uncovering the past.
May you like
We were about to hear the truth about the woman who almost took my home.
And this time, she had no idea we had proof.
