Chapter 7: What Happened to Robert

I stopped breathing.

Evelyn stared at me.

Lily covered her mouth.

“Repeat that,” I said.

Thomas’s voice shook.

“Your son caused the accident.””

“What accident?””

“The garage.””

I remembered.

Robert had fallen in the garage three weeks before his death.

Daniel had told everyone it was an accident.

He had said Robert slipped on oil.

That was the story printed in the obituary.

That was the story I had repeated because I couldn’t imagine anything else.

I whispered, “Are you saying Daniel pushed him?””

“I’m saying I have evidence.””

“Where?””

“I can meet you.””

“When?””

“Today.””

“Where?””

Thomas gave me an address.

Evelyn immediately shook her head.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“He may be baiting us.””

“I know.””

“Then we don’t go alone.””

Two hours later, we met Thomas Reed in the back room of a quiet diner.

He was fifty, broad-shouldered, with tired eyes and a scar near his chin.

The moment he sat, he placed a manila envelope on the table.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

“For what?””

“For waiting.””

I looked at him.

“Why did you?””

“Because Daniel threatened me.””

“How?””

“He said if I spoke, I would lose everything.””

I almost smiled.

“Apparently that line works on everyone.””

Thomas looked down.

“Robert hired me because he thought Daniel was using his father’s company accounts.””

“Was he?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

“About eighty thousand over eighteen months.””

Evelyn asked, “Did Robert know?””

“He knew enough to confront him.””

“And then?””

“Daniel denied everything.””

Thomas pushed the envelope toward me.

Inside was a photocopy of a surveillance report.

Date.

Time.

Location.

A diagram of the garage.

Then a photograph.

Robert was standing near his truck.

Daniel was behind him.

I stared at the image.

“It’s blurry.””

“Yes.””

“Could this prove anything?””

“Not by itself.””

Thomas pulled out another page.

“It was from the security camera.””

Evelyn read it.

“Motion detected at 8:17 p.m.””

Thomas nodded.

“Robert fell at 8:19.””

“Two minutes later.””

“Yes.””

“What happened at 8:18?””

Thomas slid another photograph across the table.

Daniel’s hand was on Robert’s shoulder.

I touched the image.

My husband had looked surprised.

Almost confused.

Then Thomas said the words I had never heard before.

“Your son didn’t call 911.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“He called his own attorney.””

Evelyn sat forward.

“How do you know?””

“Phone records.””

Thomas pushed them across the table.

8:21 — Call to attorney.

8:27 — Call to insurance broker.

8:33 — Call to hospital.

I stared at the page.

“Six minutes.””

Thomas nodded.

“He wanted to know how to report the injury.””

I felt sick.

Not because Robert had fallen.

Because Daniel had stood there beside him and thought first about paperwork.

I asked, “When did Robert regain consciousness?””

“In the ambulance.””

Thomas looked at me.

“He asked for you.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“He did.””

“You were told he was confused.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Thomas hesitated.

“There’s something else.””

I looked at him.

“Robert knew Daniel was taking money.””

“Yes.””

“He also knew Daniel was trying to get control of the house.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“He intercepted an email.””

“Which email?””

Thomas pulled out another copy.

It was addressed to Daniel.

From a developer.

The subject line read:

*Hale Property — Purchase Proposal*

I stared.

“Forty-eight hours before Robert’s accident.””

Thomas nodded.

I whispered, “He wanted to sell the house.””

“That’s what Robert believed.””

I unfolded another sheet.

It was a statement written by Robert.

The handwriting was shaky.

But the words were clear.

Daniel believes he will inherit everything once I am gone. He is wrong.

My heart stopped.

Evelyn looked at the page.

“Read the next line.””

I did.

Margaret must never know about the second beneficiary until Daniel reveals his intentions in court.

“What second beneficiary?””

Thomas exchanged a look with Evelyn.

“Robert did not tell us.””

I stared at the page.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Evelyn said, “Did Daniel know about this statement?””

“No.””

Thomas shook his head.

“That is why we believed it was still safe.””

I looked at the envelope.

“There’s something else in here.””

At the bottom was a USB drive.

Thomas said, “That contains the original garage footage.””

Evelyn picked it up carefully.

“Where was this stored?””

“Robert gave me a backup.””

“When?””

“The day before his accident.””

I closed my eyes.

He had known.

He had been preparing.

And then I remembered something.

One detail I had never understood.

The night Robert came home from the hospital, he told Daniel something privately.

I had asked what they were discussing.

Daniel smiled.

“Dad just wants me to take care of Mom.””

I believed him.

I had believed him because I was a wife grieving for her husband and a mother grieving for the son she thought she still knew.

Thomas leaned toward me.

“Mrs. Hale.””

“Yes?””

“Daniel doesn’t know I kept those files.””

I looked at him.

“Then why tell me now?””

He swallowed.

“Because after I saw your name in the guardianship petition, I realized he was doing to you what he did to your husband.””

My phone vibrated.

A text from Daniel.

The judge just approved an emergency order. You cannot enter the house without me.

I stared at the screen.

Then another text arrived.

You should have stayed in the motel.

I handed the phone to Evelyn.

She read it.

Then looked at Thomas.

“Where is the house security server?””

Thomas answered quietly.

“In the house.””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“And Daniel has access.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“He’s going to destroy the footage.””

Thomas shook his head.

“He can try.””

“Why?””

“Because I already copied it.””

He opened his laptop.

“There’s only one problem.””

“What?””

Thomas looked at me.

“The last six minutes of the recording were never saved.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

He hesitated.

“Because someone manually stopped the camera.””

“Who?””

Thomas pointed to the timestamp.

The recording stopped at 8:18 p.m.

One minute before Robert fell.

And beside the deletion record was a username.

May you like

*M.HALE*

Mine.
