Chapter 9: The Betrayal Hidden in My Own Family
The nursery door moved.
Just an inch.
But I saw it.
And after everything I had learned that day, I no longer ignored small things.
Small things were where secrets lived.
I slowly folded Marcus’s letter and placed it inside my pocket.
Natalie noticed the movement.
Her eyes shifted toward the doorway.
Neither of us spoke.
The room was completely still.
Then the door opened.
“Claire?””
Victoria stood there.
Her face was pale.
For a moment, relief almost crossed my mind.
Then I remembered.
Marcus’s warning.
*There is someone inside my family who helped him.*
Someone.
Not a stranger.
Not an enemy.
Someone who had eaten dinner with us.
Someone who had hugged me after Marcus died.
Someone who had watched me cry.
Victoria stepped inside.
“I heard voices.””
I studied her carefully.
“How long were you standing there?””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
“I wasn’t.””
I waited.
She looked away.
A person telling the truth usually answers quickly.
A person hiding something explains.
“I was just walking by.””
Natalie crossed her arms.
“At midnight?””
Victoria looked at her.
“Who are you to question me?””
Natalie didn’t react.
“The person who knows what your husband has been hiding.””
Victoria flinched.
Not because of Natalie’s words.
Because of the word *husband*.
Raymond.
Her husband.
The man who had betrayed everyone.
I looked at my sister.
“Victoria.””
She swallowed.
“What?””
“Did you know about the files?””
Her eyes moved to mine.
“No.””
Too fast.
I felt my heart sink.
Because I wanted to believe her.
I really did.
But Marcus had taught me something important.
Trust wasn’t about what people said.
It was about what they did.
And Victoria had done a lot.
She had taken my room.
She had helped Raymond push me aside.
She had watched me suffer.
“I need you to tell me the truth,” I said.
“I am.””
“Then why were you outside this room?””
“Because I heard you talking.””
“About what?””
Silence.
Her face tightened.
And there it was.
The hesitation.
“You heard enough to know this mattered.””
Victoria looked at the floor.
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I spent seven months wondering why Marcus was gone.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“I spent seven months thinking I wasn’t enough. That maybe I missed something. That maybe there was something I should have seen.””
I stepped closer.
“But everyone around me knew more than I did.””
Victoria’s face broke.
“Claire, I never wanted you hurt.””
The words were quiet.
And somehow, they hurt more.
Because I believed she meant them.
But wanting someone not to hurt wasn’t the same as protecting them.
“Then why did you help him?””
Her eyes lifted.
“I didn’t know.””
“Didn’t know what?””
“That Raymond was dangerous.””
I stared.
“Then what did you know?””
She said nothing.
“Victoria.””
She sat down on the edge of the chair.
And for the first time since I had known her, she looked small.
“I knew Raymond was looking for something.””
My chest tightened.
“When?””
“Before Thanksgiving.””
“How long?””
She looked away.
“Months.””
The room felt colder.
“You knew?””
“I didn’t know what it was.””
“But you knew he was searching.””
She nodded.
“I thought it was business.””
I laughed quietly.
“Business?””
She wiped her face.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like you ignored something because believing him was easier.””
She didn’t argue.
Because she knew.
That was the worst part.
She knew.
“I saw him going through Marcus’s things,” she whispered.
My heart stopped.
“When?””
“After the funeral.””
I stared at her.
“You let him?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I asked him what he was doing.””
“And?””
“He said Marcus left something valuable behind.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Valuable?””
She nodded.
“He said it was connected to a deal Marcus had been involved in.””
“A deal?””
“I didn’t believe him.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Victoria covered her face.
“Because I was scared.””
The answer was honest.
And that made it complicated.
I wanted to hate her.
It would have been easier.
But she was still my sister.
The person who used to climb into my bed during thunderstorms.
The person who held my hand when we got our first shots as kids.
The person who had betrayed me.
And somehow, still mattered.
“What were you scared of?””
She looked at me.
“Losing everything.””
I stared.
“Everything?””
“My life.””
She laughed sadly.
“My marriage. My home. The person I thought Raymond was.””
I looked away.
Because I understood that kind of pain.
Realizing someone you love is not who you thought they were.
But I also knew something else.
Pain did not excuse choices.
“You chose him over me.””
Victoria started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology hung in the air.
But it couldn’t fix seven months.
It couldn’t fix the garage.
It couldn’t fix the way I had begged Marcus’s memory to somehow make sense of the cruelty.
Natalie stepped forward.
“Where is Raymond now?””
Victoria looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because he knows Claire has the drive.””
Her face changed.
“What?””
“He knows.””
Victoria stood immediately.
“No.””
The fear in her voice was real.
“He can’t know.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She looked toward the hallway.
Then whispered:
“Because if he knows, he’ll leave.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Victoria’s eyes filled with panic.
“And if he leaves…”
She stopped.
I waited.
“What, Victoria?””
She looked at me.
“He’ll take the evidence with him.””
The room went silent.
“What evidence?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“Yes, you do.””
“No.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
Victoria looked at me.
And I saw it.
She had been afraid all day.
Not of me.
Not of the truth.
Of Raymond.
“He told me something once,” she whispered.
“What?””
“That if anyone ever found out what happened to Marcus…”
She swallowed.
“He would make sure nobody had a normal life again.””
A chill ran through me.
Before I could respond, the lights went out.
The entire house went dark.
Natalie immediately moved.
“Everyone stay still.””
A second later, we heard it.
A sound downstairs.
A drawer opening.
Then footsteps.
Someone was inside.
Victoria grabbed my arm.
“Claire.””
I pulled away.
Not because I was angry.
Because I needed to move.
“Where is my father?””
She looked confused.
“What?””
“Where is Dad?””
“I don’t know.””
I felt a sudden panic.
Because my father had been downstairs.
And Raymond had been making calls.
Someone had planned this.
Natalie moved toward the door.
“We need to leave.””
“No.””
I looked at her.
“Not yet.””
“Claire—”
“My father knows something.””
She understood.
“If he’s still here.””
We moved quietly through the hallway.
The house that had once felt familiar now felt like a trap.
Every shadow looked different.
Every sound mattered.
We reached the stairs.
Then we heard a voice.
Raymond.
“You should have listened to me, Harrison.””
I froze.
My father answered.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“No.””
Raymond’s voice was calm.
“That’s what Marcus said too.””
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Natalie.
She understood.
We moved closer.
Through the gap in the railing, I saw them.
Raymond stood in the living room.
My father stood across from him.
And on the table between them was the same black box.
The one Marcus had hidden.
The one Raymond wanted.
“You ruined everything,” Raymond said.
My father looked exhausted.
“I tried to fix it.””
“You tried to protect yourself.””
“I tried to protect my daughter.””
Raymond laughed.
“Your daughter?””
His eyes lifted.
And then he saw me.
The smile returned.
Slowly.
“Oh.””
The room went silent.
“Claire.””
I stepped forward.
Raymond looked at me.
Then at Victoria.
Then at Natalie.
And somehow…
He smiled.
Because he wasn’t surprised.
He was relieved.
“I was wondering when you’d finally put everything together.””
My father looked at him.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Raymond ignored him.
He looked directly at me.
“Do you want to know the truth about Marcus?””
I said nothing.
He stepped closer.
“The truth is, your husband didn’t discover my betrayal.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then what?””
His smile disappeared.
“He discovered yours.””
The words hit like a bullet.
I couldn’t move.
“What?””
Raymond looked at me.
“Ask Natalie why Marcus trusted her.””
Natalie’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
And suddenly, I realized something.
Everyone in this house had secrets.
My father.
My sister.
Raymond.
Natalie.
And maybe…
Even the woman who claimed to be my husband’s ally.
Raymond smiled.
“Go ahead, Claire.””
He leaned closer.
“Ask her what Marcus really found out.””
The lights flickered back on.
May you like
And standing in the middle of the room…
I realized I no longer knew who was telling the truth.
