Chapter 7 - THE FINAL THREAT

Three days passed. Julian remained at large. International police swept airports, borders, safe houses known to his associates. Nothing. He had vanished as completely as smoke.

Samuel divided his time between Lena at the hospital and preparing for the legal battles ahead. He had stepped aside from all duties at Vale International pending investigation. The board—aware of everything, grateful for his honesty—had pledged full support but insisted he take a leave of absence. He accepted. He had nothing left to prove to anyone but himself.

Lena improved rapidly. Doctors declared her physically fit—bruises healing, fever gone, strength returning. But they warned Samuel the emotional scars would take far longer. She still woke screaming in the night. She still flinched at loud noises. She still refused to be left alone in any room with a closed door. Samuel never left her side. He slept in the chair beside her bed. He held her hand through every nightmare. He told her stories of her mother, of happier days, of the life she would one day have.

On the fourth morning, Lena sat up very suddenly and stared toward the window.

“Grandpa… that man. Standing down there. Watching us.”

Samuel stood and looked out. Across the street, beneath the shadow of an oak tree, stood a man in a dark coat and wide‑brimmed hat. He looked up as Samuel appeared at the window. Lifted one hand. Removed the hat.

Julian.

Staring straight up at him. Pale, wild‑eyed, but entirely calm. He held something in his other hand—up high enough for Samuel to see clearly. A small glass vial. Pale liquid inside. Poison.

Samuel’s blood turned to ice.

“Stay here,” he told Lena, voice tight. “Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone but me or the police. Promise me.”

Lena nodded, terrified.

Samuel ran from the room and down the stairs, shouting for security. By the time he reached the street, Julian was gone. But scrawled in chalk on the pavement beneath the window, in large bold letters where Lena could see it clearly from above, was one message:

*I AM NOT DONE.*

Panic set in. Samuel moved Lena immediately to a secure, undisclosed location—an estate surrounded by guards, high walls, electronic surveillance. He doubled protection. He coordinated round‑the‑clock police patrols. Julian was cornered. He had nowhere left to run. Which meant he was desperate. And desperate men do the unthinkable.

That evening, Samuel received a single letter. Hand‑delivered. No return address. He opened it alone in his study, hands steady despite everything.

*Samuel,*

*You chose war. Very well. But remember this—I did not act alone. I have loyalists inside your security detail. Inside the police force. Inside the very teams hunting me. They watch. They wait. And when the moment is right… they strike.*

*Surrender control of Vale International. Drop all charges. Walk away forever. Do this… and Lena lives. Refuse… and she dies exactly as her mother did. Quietly. Painfully. And you will watch it happen.*

*I will give you one week. Then I come for her. There is nowhere you can hide her that I cannot find.*

Samuel dropped the letter onto his desk. He read it again. Then again. Julian had infiltrated everything. Which meant his guards could be compromised. His phones tapped. His home watched. Even the people closest to him might be working for his brother.

He thought of Clara’s warning inside the locket. Trust no one.

Samuel stood up and walked to the window. Night had fallen. Somewhere out there, his own brother plotted to murder the last remaining piece of his daughter he had left.

He would not give Julian the company. He would not surrender. But he would not simply wait to be struck, either. He would set a trap. One final, desperate gambit to draw Julian out into the open and end this before anyone else died.

He called his attorney, the lead prosecutor, and the one detective he had known for thirty years and trusted with his life. He laid out his plan. They listened in silence.

“It is dangerous,” the detective said quietly. “If Julian suspects anything… Lena dies.”

“If we do nothing… she dies anyway,” Samuel replied. “This is the only way. Julian wants a meeting. He wants to humiliate me. He wants to take what he believes is his. Fine. I will give him exactly what he asks for. And this time… he will not walk away.”

They set the trap in absolute, total secrecy. Not even the rest of the security detail would know. Only four people in the entire world would understand what was about to happen.

Samuel walked to Lena’s room. She sat awake, waiting for him. She saw his face and stood up, frightened.

“Grandpa? Is something wrong?”

Samuel knelt before her and held her hands tight. “Listen to me very carefully, Lena. In seven days… we are going to meet the man who hurt your mother. Uncle Julian. He believes he is coming to take everything from us. But we will be ready. And you… you must be the bravest you have ever been.”

Lena swallowed hard. “I am not afraid. Not if you are there.”

Samuel pulled her close and held her. Tears stinging his eyes. “I will be right beside you. Every step. No matter what happens. I will never let him touch you again.”

Outside, the wind howled around the house. Somewhere in the darkness, Julian watched and waited. The week ahead would be the longest, most dangerous week of all their lives.
