Chapter 6 - THE BROTHER’S SECRET

Samuel launched his investigation quietly. He pulled every file, every transaction, every communication linked to Julian Vale over the past decade. He worked late nights in his study at home, doors locked, curtains drawn, sharing nothing with anyone—even his own investigators—until he knew exactly what he faced.
What he found sickened him. Julian had been siphoning money from Vale International for years. Millions. Channeled through shell companies Edward had set up at his direction. Payments to Daniel. Payments to the doctor. Payments to offshore accounts that still remained active.
And deeper still… Samuel found what Julian had threatened him with. Forty years earlier, when the company was young and desperate to survive, Samuel had made difficult choices. Deals that walked the very edge of legality. Agreements with men he should never have trusted. He had done it to save the company—to provide for his wife, his daughter, his family. But Julian had been there. Julian had kept records. Julian had held onto every scrap of evidence, waiting for the day he could use it to seize control.
Clara had discovered it all. She had found the old files in the archives. She had learned what Julian planned. She had tried to warn Samuel—carefully, gently—afraid that if she spoke openly, Julian would move against her before Samuel could believe her. Which was exactly what had happened.
Julian had ordered her silenced. Edward had arranged it. Daniel had carried it out. And Lena… Lena had been the only loose end left alive.
Samuel sat back in his chair, exhausted and heartsick. To destroy Julian meant exposing the crimes Samuel himself had committed. Prison. Ruin. The end of Vale International. The loss of everything he had spent his life building. But if he stayed silent… Julian would continue hiding. One day he would return. And Lena would never be safe.
There was no choice to make.
He was drafting orders to freeze Julian’s remaining assets and coordinate with international law enforcement when his private phone rang. A number he knew well. Julian. Calling from an undisclosed location.
Samuel answered on the first ring. “Julian.”
“Hello, Samuel.” His brother’s voice was smooth, familiar, dripping with quiet menace. “I see you have been reading my files. And I see you found Clara’s little hidden message inside the locket. Clever girl. Always too clever for her own good.”
“You killed her,” Samuel said. His voice shook. “You ordered my daughter murdered.”
“I protected an investment,” Julian said coldly. “Clara was going to ruin everything. She was going to drag our family’s name through the mud over ancient history. She threatened to expose me. I merely… removed the threat.”
“And Lena?” Samuel demanded. “A six‑year‑old child. Locked in a cage. Starved. Frozen. Was she also an investment to protect?”
Julian was silent for a moment. “Daniel and Marissa acted on their own there. I told them to keep her safe and quiet until matters settled. They… exceeded their instructions. But you gave me no choice, Samuel. If you walk down this path, I release everything. Every document. Every recording. Every crime you committed forty years ago. You go to prison. Your name is destroyed. Everything you built crumbles to dust. All to avenge a daughter who should never have gone looking for ghosts.”
Samuel stood slowly and looked out the window. Down below, in the hospital wing, Lena slept peacefully, safe for the moment.
“Clara was right about one thing,” Samuel said quietly. “You are the monster. You have been all your life. And you are wrong about one thing—my empire was built to protect my family. If destroying it protects Lena and brings you to justice… then let it burn.”
Julian laughed—a harsh, ugly sound. “Then burn it shall. I am sending the files to every news agency and prosecutor on the continent within the hour. You have twenty‑four hours to withdraw every investigation, restore my access, and hand over control of Vale International. Or you fall with me.”
The line went dead.
Samuel did not panic. He did not hesitate. He called his attorney. He called the lead prosecutor. He laid every last card on the table—including his own guilt.
“I committed those crimes,” he told them plainly. “I was young. Desperate. Trying to save my father’s company. I accept full responsibility. But Julian Vale murdered my daughter to hide those crimes. And he has terrorized my granddaughter to keep them secret. If you prosecute me… prosecute him first. And let the truth be known, no matter what it costs.”
By dawn, the first headlines hit. But they did not speak of Samuel’s past. They spoke of Julian Vale—international arrest warrant issued, charges of conspiracy to murder, fraud, kidnapping. His accounts frozen. His known contacts raided. And buried deep inside the reports, acknowledged but not sensationalized, was Samuel’s admission. He would face investigation. He would answer for what he had done. But Vale International would survive. Lena would be protected. And Julian would not escape.
Samuel returned to the hospital. Lena was sitting up in bed, watching the door. She looked better today—color returning to her cheeks, strength returning to her voice. She held out her arms the moment she saw him.
Samuel sat beside her and held her close. “It is beginning to be over, Lena. He will not hurt anyone ever again.”
Lena rested her head against his chest. “Mother always said… truth is louder than lies. Even if it takes a long time to hear it.”

Samuel closed his eyes. Clara had known. Clara had believed. And Clara had been right.
But as he held his granddaughter, a quiet fear settled in his heart. Julian had promised to release everything. He had threatened ruin. And he was still out there. Somewhere. Waiting. Watching. Planning one final, terrible blow before he was captured.
