Chapter 6: The Person They Erased

The name stared back at me.

I read it once.

Then again.

My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

*Lucía Mendoza.*

Below the name was a sentence.

*Primary beneficiary representative and authorized family witness.*

I looked at Daniel.

“Who is Lucía Mendoza?””

Nobody answered.

Not immediately.

And that silence told me more than words could have.

My father looked away.

My mother wasn't there to see it.

But I knew exactly how she would have reacted.

She would have gone quiet first.

Then she would have tried to control the conversation.

Then she would have told me I was misunderstanding.

It was the family pattern.

A secret.

A pause.

A lie wrapped in concern.

I held the paper up.

“Who is Lucía?””

My father finally spoke.

“Karla.””

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“Do not say my name like that. Not this time.””

He swallowed.

“She was part of the past.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Is that true?””

Daniel's expression was careful.

“She was part of your grandmother's life.””

“That wasn't my question.””

I stepped closer.

“Who is she?””

Claudia answered quietly.

“Your aunt.””

The room stopped.

I blinked.

“My aunt?””

“Yes.””

I looked at my father.

“You have a sister?””

He didn't answer.

And somehow, that was the loudest answer possible.

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn't know what else to do.

“My entire life, I thought I only had one side of my family.””

Claudia looked down.

“That's what you were told.””

“Why?””

Nobody moved.

Then my father said:

“Because she left.””

I turned toward him.

“People leave.””

My voice lowered.

“But you erased her.””

His face hardened.

“You don't know what happened.””

“Then explain.””

He looked away.

“I don't owe you every detail of my childhood.””

“No.””

I nodded.

“You owe me the truth about my family.””

Daniel placed his hand on the documents.

“The trust was designed this way intentionally.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

“Your grandmother believed that the truth about Lucía would eventually become important.””

“Why?””

He opened another page.

“Because Lucía was the person who helped create the trust.””

I frowned.

“My aunt?””

“Yes.””

“She helped protect my inheritance?””

“Yes.””

I looked at my father.

“Then why did you hide her?””

His silence stretched.

Then he said:

“Because she betrayed us.””

The words landed heavily.

I stared.

“How?””

My father walked toward the table.

For the first time, he looked less like someone defending himself.

He looked like someone remembering something painful.

“She fought with my parents constantly.””

“About what?””

“Money.””

Claudia interrupted.

“That is not the whole story.””

My father looked at her.

“Don't.””

“No.””

Claudia's voice became firmer.

“Karla deserves the truth.””

I watched them.

Two people who had clearly carried this argument for years.

“What happened?””

Claudia took a breath.

“Lucía discovered your father was using family money without permission.””

I looked at my father.

“What?””

“It was different back then.””

“That seems to be your favorite sentence.””

He ignored that.

“My father was sick. The business needed help.””

Claudia shook her head.

“Your grandfather was ill, yes. But that does not excuse what happened.””

“What happened?””

Daniel answered.

“Ernesto moved money from family accounts.””

My stomach tightened.

“Again?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“This was before the house.””

I sat down slowly.

The timeline was becoming clearer.

My father didn't suddenly make one bad decision.

There had been years of hiding.

Years of moving pieces around.

Years of convincing people that the problem was everyone else.

“My aunt found out?””

“Yes,” Claudia said.

“And?””

“She confronted him.””

My father looked angry.

“She humiliated me.””

Claudia turned to him.

“She stopped you from taking what wasn't yours.””

My father stood silent.

I looked at him.

“You hated her because she stopped you?””

His eyes flashed.

“You don't understand family loyalty.””

I stared.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I understand it too well.””

I looked at the trust.

“I understand that everyone keeps saying family while hiding things from me.””

That sentence hurt him.

Good.

Because I was tired of being the only person carrying the pain.

Daniel continued.

“Lucía wanted the trust created because she believed Elena's assets needed protection.””

“From my father.””

He didn't answer.

He didn't have to.

I looked at the page again.

“Where is she now?””

Another silence.

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“Where is my aunt?””

Claudia hesitated.

Then she said:

“She has been living in San Miguel for the last six months.””

I froze.

“Here?””

“Yes.””

“Near me?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

My father spoke.

“Because she wanted to watch.””

I turned.

“What?””

He looked angry again.

“She always wanted to come back and act like she was the hero.””

Claudia shook her head.

“She came back because Elena asked her to.””

“When?””

“Before your grandmother died.””

My chest tightened.

“My grandmother knew?””

“Yes.””

“And nobody told me?””

Nobody answered.

I stood.

“Where is she?””

Claudia looked at me.

“Karla—”

“Where?””

Daniel glanced at the clock.

Then at the window.

“She was supposed to meet us today.””

My heart skipped.

“Today?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Before Daniel could answer, my phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The screen showed an unknown number.

For some reason, I knew.

I knew before I answered.

I pressed the button.

“Hello?””

A woman's voice came through.

Soft.

Older.

Careful.

“Is this Karla?””

I couldn't speak.

Because I recognized the emotion in her voice.

The same one I had seen in Isabel's eyes.

Like she had waited years for this moment.

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Lucía Mendoza.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

My father stood immediately.

“No.””

I looked at him.

He had heard.

He knew.

Lucía continued.

“I know this is sudden.””

I couldn't take my eyes off my father.

“Why are you calling me?””

The woman breathed in.

Then answered:

“Because your father is standing in the same room as you, isn't he?””

My blood went cold.

“How do you know that?””

“Because he always does the same thing when he is afraid.””

I looked at my father.

He looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

Lucía continued.

“Karla, I need you to listen carefully.””

I walked away from my father.

“Okay.””

“Your grandmother didn't only leave you the house.””

I looked at the documents.

“I know.””

“No.””

Her voice became urgent.

“You don't understand.””

A chill moved through me.

“What else did she leave me?””

There was a pause.

Then Lucía said:

“The evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“The evidence that proves why your father tried to destroy the trust.””

I stopped breathing.

My father whispered:

“Don't listen to her.””

Lucía heard him.

“Karla.””

“Yes?””

“Your father is not afraid because he might lose the house.””

I looked at him.

“Then why?””

Her answer was quiet.

And it changed everything.

“Because if you find the original records, you will discover who helped him.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Who?””

Lucía didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

“The person you trust most.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

The room felt colder.

I slowly turned toward Daniel.

“Where are the original records?””

Daniel's expression changed.

Because he knew.

And whatever was coming next was worse than anything I had already learned.

“They are not in the trust.””

“Then where are they?””

He looked at my father.

“They were hidden.””

“By who?””

Daniel didn't hesitate.

“Your father.””

My father took one step backward.

May you like

And for the first time in my entire life...

I saw him look at me like he was afraid of what I might discover.
