Chapter 7: The Brother Who Was Never Lost
I read Evelyn’s message until the words stopped looking like words.
*Daniel, don’t trust the man who tells you he’s your brother.*
Then the second message appeared.
*You were never the target, Daniel. You were the replacement.*
I stared at the screen.
My hands were cold.
My thoughts were moving too fast to follow.
Ethan.
My brother.
The person who had been hidden from me for my entire life.
And now Evelyn was warning me about him.
The same Evelyn who had known my father.
The same Evelyn who had hidden the truth.
The same Evelyn who had told me she was protecting me.
I looked at the photograph again.
Ethan standing beside her.
Smiling.
Like they had nothing to hide.
“Daniel.””
Thomas’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
Richard.
Thomas.
My mother.
They all knew something.
I hated that feeling.
Being the last person to understand my own life.
“What did she say?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Then I turned the phone around.
Richard read it first.
His face hardened.
Thomas took the phone next.
His reaction was different.
Not anger.
Concern.
“That’s not possible.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Evelyn would never meet Ethan.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You’re sure?””
Thomas hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“You’re not sure.””
He looked away.
“No.””
I laughed quietly.
“Of course.””
Nobody said anything.
I walked toward the desk and picked up the DNA report again.
“So let me understand this.””
My voice shook.
“My father had another son.””
“Yes,” my mother whispered.
“Ethan is my brother.””
“Yes.””
“Evelyn knew.””
Nobody answered.
“And now she’s telling me not to trust him.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Daniel, listen.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
He stopped.
“I am done listening to people who explain my life after they already ruined it.””
That silenced him.
Because he knew he deserved it.
I looked back at the documents.
The DNA test was real.
The records were real.
The evidence was sitting right in front of me.
But one question kept repeating.
Why?
Why hide Ethan?
Why hide me?
Why wait until now?
Then I saw something.
A date.
The DNA test had been completed six months ago.
Six months.
Someone had known.
Someone had discovered Ethan months before the hearing.
Months before Samuel appeared.
Months before my entire life collapsed.
I pointed at the report.
“Who ordered this?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Richard.
“You said you didn’t know where Ethan was.””
“I didn’t.””
“Then who found him?””
Silence.
Thomas looked at my mother.
My mother looked away.
That was when I understood.
Someone in this room knew more.
I turned toward her.
“Mom.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel.””
“Who found Ethan?””
She took a long breath.
“Your father.””
The answer made no sense.
“He died twenty years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then how?””
She looked at the folder.
“Because your father left instructions.””
I stared.
“Instructions for what?””
“To find him.””
The room became quiet.
Richard stepped forward.
“Your father knew the truth would eventually come out.””
I looked at him.
“And he planned for it.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Richard looked at the documents.
“Because he knew Harrow would come after you.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“After me?””
Richard nodded.
“Victor needed someone loyal.””
“And he had me.””
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
Because it was true.
I had spent years defending Harrow Industries.
I had protected the company.
I had repeated the same phrases Victor taught me.
Growth.
Legacy.
Family.
All lies.
I looked at the folder.
“Replacement.””
Nobody spoke.
The word from Evelyn’s message echoed.
I looked at Richard.
“What does that mean?””
Richard’s face darkened.
“Daniel…”
“What does it mean?””
Thomas answered quietly.
“It means Victor never wanted you to inherit Harrow.””
I frowned.
“Then what did he want?””
Thomas looked at me.
“He wanted Ethan.””
A silence followed.
“Why?””
“Because Ethan was your father’s first heir.””
I stared.
“My father planned to give Harrow to him?””
“No.””
Thomas shook his head.
“Your father planned to destroy Harrow.””
The words hit me.
“Then why create an heir?””
“To expose the people controlling it.””
I looked at the documents again.
My father had not been building a successor.
He had been building a weapon.
And somehow, I had been the distraction.
A loud noise came from above us.
Everyone froze.
Someone was inside the house.
Again.
Thomas immediately turned off the light.
“Quiet.””
We stood in darkness.
Footsteps moved across the floor above.
Slow.
Careful.
Whoever it was wasn’t searching randomly.
They knew where to look.
My mother whispered:
“How did they find the room?””
Nobody answered.
Then a voice came through the hidden entrance.
“Daniel.””
My blood froze.
Because I recognized it.
Evelyn.
“Daniel, I know you’re down there.””
Thomas looked at me.
His expression changed.
“Don’t answer.””
But I was already moving.
Not toward the door.
Toward the speaker.
“How did you find us?””
Silence.
Then Evelyn answered.
“Because I helped build that passage.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Thomas looked furious.
“You.””
Evelyn’s voice continued.
“I don’t have time to explain everything.””
I stepped closer.
“Then explain something.””
“Daniel.””
“Why did you test my DNA?””
Silence.
That was the answer.
She had done it.
“Why?””
Her voice softened.
“Because your father asked me to.””
I froze.
Thomas looked shocked.
Richard whispered:
“No.””
Evelyn continued.
“He knew Ethan would come back one day.””
I clenched my fists.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know if you were ready.””
“Ready?””
I laughed.
“You watched me spend my entire life believing a lie.””
“I watched you survive.””
The words hit harder than I wanted them to.
Because part of me understood.
But another part hated her for it.
“Open the door.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“No.””
Evelyn responded immediately.
“Thomas, if you don’t let me in, everyone here dies.””
Nobody moved.
The certainty in her voice was terrifying.
Richard approached the door.
“You brought them here.””
“No.””
“You know who did.””
A pause.
Then Evelyn said:
“Yes.””
I looked at the door.
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
“Evelyn.””
Her voice became quiet.
“The same person who has been watching Daniel since the day he was born.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Your brother.””
I looked at Thomas.
At Richard.
At my mother.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone was thinking the same thing.
Ethan.
My brother.
The person I had just learned existed.
The person I had never met.
The person who might have been following me my entire life.
I shook my head.
“No.””
Evelyn’s voice broke slightly.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
“You need to understand.””
The lights above us suddenly flickered.
Then the hidden door lock clicked.
Someone had opened it from the outside.
Nobody had touched it.
The door slowly moved inward.
A figure stood in the darkness.
Tall.
Still.
Watching.
Thomas stepped in front of me.
Richard reached for something inside his coat.
My mother whispered:
“Oh God.””
The person stepped into the light.
For a moment, I saw myself.
Not exactly.
Older.
Harder.
A face shaped by a life I never lived.
The man looked at me with an expression I couldn’t understand.
Pain.
Anger.
And something that looked almost like recognition.
Then he spoke.
“Hello, Daniel.””
My breath caught.
Because hearing my own voice come from someone else was the most terrifying sound I had ever heard.
He looked around the room.
Then at the folder in my hand.
“You finally found it.””
I couldn’t move.
“Ethan?””
He smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
Then he looked at Richard.
At Thomas.
At my mother.
And finally back at me.
“Now you’re going to learn the truth your father buried.””
He stepped closer.
“The truth is…”
He paused.
And whispered:
“I was never the son he abandoned.””
My heart pounded.
“Then who were you?””
Ethan looked directly into my eyes.
And said:
“I was the son he chose.””
Behind him, Evelyn appeared in the doorway.
And the look on her face told me she already knew what Ethan was about to reveal.
“He didn’t hide me from Harrow, Daniel.””
May you like
Ethan held up a small envelope.
“He hid you from me.””
