Chapter 6: The File Marked Carter
Nobody moved.
Not even Mason.
The room felt frozen.
Like the explosion overseas had happened again.
One moment.
One sound.
One second separating everything before and after.
“Jenna,” I whispered.
“Yes.””
“Explain.””
Mason stepped toward the phone.
“No.””
My father blocked him.
“You’re not touching that.””
Mason’s eyes became cold.
“Robert, move.””
Dad didn’t.
“I’ve been waiting twenty years to hear you say that.””
Mason froze.
Twenty years.
The words hung in the air.
I looked between them.
“You know each other.””
Neither answered.
That was answer enough.
My voice became quieter.
“How?””
Dad closed his eyes briefly.
Then he sat down.
“Because Mason Carter isn’t his real name.””
I already knew.
But hearing it aloud still felt like being hit.
Jenna spoke through the phone.
“His real name is Mason Reeves.””
The room went silent.
My eyes moved to the photograph.
The handwriting.
The note.
Daniel Reeves.
My mother’s secret.
“No,” I whispered.
Mason looked at me.
“Nat—”
“Don’t.””
The word stopped him.
For the first time in fourteen years, I saw him as a stranger.
Not my husband.
Not my partner.
A man standing in front of me with a stolen name.
Elaine picked up the old file.
“Robert.””
Dad nodded.
“It’s time.””
He opened the envelope completely.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Reports.
And a letter.
A letter written by my mother.
My hands shook as I took it.
The paper was old.
But her handwriting was clear.
*Natalie,*
*If you are reading this, something has happened that forced your father to give you this.*
I stopped breathing.
*I prayed you would never need to know.*
My eyes burned.
*Mason Reeves entered your life for a reason. It was not love.*
I looked at Mason.
He looked away.
*Six years ago, I discovered that the Reeves family had been searching for something that belonged to your grandfather.*
I frowned.
My grandfather?
*A military intelligence archive. A file that was believed destroyed.*
My heart started pounding.
My family had always been ordinary.
My father served.
My mother taught history.
Nothing more.
But apparently, there were things nobody told me.
*Mason was sent to get close to you because of your security clearance and your connections within military intelligence.*
The room blurred.
I looked at Mason.
“You used me.””
He didn’t deny it.
That was the worst part.
Jenna spoke again.
“I didn’t know at first.””
Her voice cracked.
“I thought Mason loved me.””
I looked at the phone.
“Then why are you helping me?””
A long pause.
“Because I found out what he was really planning.””
Mason laughed bitterly.
“You’re pathetic.””
Everyone looked at him.
The anger in his voice was no longer hidden.
“You think she cares about you?””
Jenna whispered:
“Mason, stop.””
“No.””
His eyes locked onto mine.
“You want the truth?””
I said nothing.
He smiled.
A cold smile.
“I didn’t marry you because of your house.””
My stomach tightened.
“I didn’t marry you because of your money.””
He stepped closer.
“I married you because your mother hid something from me.””
Dad stood.
“Enough.””
But Mason continued.
“Something your family has protected for decades.””
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, it wasn’t from Jenna.
It was from an unknown sender.
I opened it.
One image appeared.
A classified military document.
Stamped across the top:
*CARTER FAMILY INTELLIGENCE ARCHIVE*
Below it was one sentence.
*“Captain Natalie Carter, your husband is not trying to steal your life.””*
A second line appeared.
*“He is trying to recover what your mother buried before she died.””*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Then another message arrived.
*“And he is not the only one looking.””*
