Chapter 8: Vanessa's Confession

Marcus held the photograph as though the paper might dissolve between his fingers.

Daniel Mercer stood beside Catherine, one hand resting on the back of a chair, his expression soft and exhausted. Catherine held a newborn wrapped in a pale blanket.

The date on the back was unmistakable.

Three days after Marcus's birth.

For the first time, the story of his family had a face beyond the name of a missing man.

Rachel photographed the document, placed it inside a protective sleeve, and returned it to Evelyn.

“We need to preserve this properly,” she said.

“And I need you to understand that we can't treat the photograph alone as proof of Daniel's legal status or what happened to him.””

“I understand,” Evelyn replied.

Marcus looked at her.

“Why did you keep this from me?””

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Everyone seems to have been afraid. My father was afraid. My mother was afraid.

My biological father disappeared. And you spent decades carrying documents that could have changed everything.””

“I know.””

“Then help me understand why.””

Evelyn took a shaky breath.

“After Daniel disappeared, Thomas received a letter threatening to expose your parentage and challenge the family arrangement. He believed Richard had enough influence to make the threat real. He thought that if he remained quiet, he could protect you until you were old enough to understand the truth.””

Marcus looked down at the photograph.

“And then Thomas died without telling me.””

“He tried to leave you a letter.””

“I found the email.””

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“Then the envelope should have been delivered to you.””

“But it wasn't.””

She looked away.

“Because I made a mistake.””

Rachel's voice sharpened.

“What mistake?””

“I thought the letter was too dangerous. I collected it from the storage facility after Daniel Whitmore died, intending to keep it safe until I could verify the contents.””

“And where is it now?”” Marcus asked.

Evelyn hesitated.

“Not with me.””

“Where?””

“Vanessa has it.””

Marcus rose so quickly that the pew creaked beneath him.

“You gave her my father's letter?””

“No. She took it.””

“How?””

“Three years ago, someone broke into my house. They didn't take jewelry or money. They searched my desk, my filing cabinet, and the storage box where I kept copies of the old agreements. The sealed envelope was missing afterward.””

Rachel exchanged a look with Marcus.

“Did you report the burglary?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because the person who entered my house left a note.””

Evelyn reached into her coat and removed a small folded paper.

Rachel put on gloves before accepting it.

The message was typed on ordinary white paper.

*IF YOU WANT YOUR HUSBAND TO REMAIN SAFE, STOP LOOKING FOR THE PAST.*

Marcus stared at the sentence.

“Your husband? Elliot?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Someone had been following him for months. He refused to believe me until a man approached him outside his office and mentioned our grandchildren.””

Rachel's expression hardened.

“Have you told the police about this?””

“No.””

“Then we need to discuss that immediately.””

Marcus turned toward the chapel door.

“I need to speak to Vanessa.””

Rachel stood.

“Not alone, and not without a plan.””

“I won't threaten her. I want to hear what she knows.””

“She may know more than she's willing to admit.””

“Then let's give her the opportunity.””

Rachel studied him.

Finally, she took out her phone.

“I'll contact her attorney. We'll request a formal interview concerning the shareholder documents and the missing letter.””

Evelyn reached for Marcus's hand.

“Please don't hurt her.””

Marcus looked down at her.

“Why would you ask me that?””

“Because Vanessa has spent her entire life trying to prove that she is loyal to her father. She believes that if she admits what happened, she'll lose everything.””

Marcus withdrew his hand gently.

“She tried to have me arrested.””

“I know.””

“She called me a fraud in front of my neighbors.””

“I know.””

“And she has apparently spent years hiding evidence that could explain what happened to my biological father.””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“I'm not asking you to forgive her. I'm asking you to find out what happened before you decide what she deserves.””

Marcus looked at Rachel.

“Arrange the meeting.””

By 2:15 p.m., Vanessa's attorney had agreed to a conference at the law firm's downtown office. The meeting would be recorded, and no one would be permitted to enter without identification.

Vanessa arrived at 3:02 p.m.

She wore a dark navy suit and carried no handbag. Her hair was pulled back tightly, and her face looked pale beneath carefully applied makeup.

When she entered the conference room and saw Marcus sitting beside Rachel, she stopped.

“I was told this was a discussion about corporate records,” she said.

“It is,” Rachel replied.

“We're also asking questions about the historical shareholder agreements and documents connected to Thomas Ellison.””

Vanessa's eyes moved to Marcus.

“You've been talking to Evelyn.””

Marcus didn't answer.

Her mouth tightened.

“I knew she would eventually interfere.””

Rachel opened her folder.

“Ms. Halbrook, did you know Thomas Ellison retained a beneficial interest in thirty percent of Halbrook Meridian?””

Vanessa sat down.

“I knew there had been a dispute.””

“Did you know that the original shareholder register was amended without a formal board resolution?””

“I was a teenager when the register was changed.””

“That doesn't answer the question.””

Vanessa folded her hands.

“My father told me Thomas had agreed to transfer his shares. I had no reason to believe otherwise.””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Did you know Daniel Mercer?””

Vanessa's fingers stiffened.

Rachel noticed.

“Yes,” Vanessa replied.

“Were you the last person to see him before he disappeared?””

Vanessa stared at Marcus.

“Who told you that?””

“Answer the question.””

Her attorney leaned toward her.

“Vanessa, you don't have to answer anything that could expose you to criminal liability. We can pause the meeting and discuss the scope of the questions.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. I've spent thirty years watching people decide what they think happened. I'm tired of it.””

She looked at Marcus.

“Yes. I saw Daniel that night.””

The room fell silent.

Marcus's voice was quiet.

“What happened?””

Vanessa rubbed her thumb against the edge of the table.

“I was sixteen. My father told me to wait in his office because he had a meeting. Daniel arrived carrying a folder.

He was angry. I'd never seen anyone speak to my father that way.””

“What did he say?””

“He accused Richard of stealing his work and using company funds to conceal the ownership of the patents. He said he had copies of the original agreements and intended to take them to a lawyer.””

Rachel wrote something down.

“Did your father threaten him?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He told Daniel that if he exposed the company, Catherine and the baby would be dragged into the scandal. Daniel said he would rather lose everything than let Richard control his family.””

Marcus's chest tightened.

“What happened next?””

“My father ordered me to leave. I went into the corridor, but I could still hear them arguing.””

“Did you see Daniel leave?””

Vanessa's eyes glistened.

“No.””

“Did you see him after that night?””

“No.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Then why did you tell people you knew nothing about his disappearance?””

“Because my father told me that Daniel had left voluntarily. He said Daniel had abandoned Catherine and the baby because he couldn't handle the consequences of his own actions.””

“And you believed him?””

“For years.””

Her voice cracked.

“Then, when I was twenty-three, I found a letter in my father's desk. It said Daniel had never collected his passport, his bank account had remained untouched, and someone had transferred money from his personal account into a company-controlled fund.””

Rachel leaned forward.

“Did you preserve the letter?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I made a copy.””

“Where is it now?””

“My father took it back.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Did you ever investigate?””

“Yes. I asked him what happened. He told me that Daniel had been involved in a private arrangement with Thomas and Catherine. He said the entire matter was none of my concern.””

“Yet you knew about the shareholder agreement.””

“Yes.””

“Did you know Thomas retained the economic interest in his shares?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Eventually.””

“When?””

“After my father died. I found the documents while going through his office.””

“And what did you do?””

Vanessa looked at the table.

“I asked our legal team to review them.””

“What did they tell you?””

“That the original trust arrangement might still be enforceable. They said the company could face a substantial claim if the documents were authenticated.””

Marcus stared at her.

“So you concealed them.””

“I didn't know what to do.””

“You could have disclosed them.””

“And destroyed the company?””

“You could have asked the courts to determine the ownership.””

Vanessa's voice rose.

“You don't understand! My father built that company. He spent his entire life turning it into something important.

If the original arrangement had been challenged, the patents could have been tied up in litigation for years. Thousands of people depended on the business.””

“And my father?””

Vanessa went silent.

“What about him?”” Marcus asked.

“What about his family? What about Daniel Mercer?””

Vanessa looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“I know what I did was wrong.””

Rachel waited.

Marcus leaned back.

“Did you take Thomas's letter from Evelyn?””

Vanessa's face changed.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because it contained information about Daniel.””

“Where is it?””

Vanessa stared at her attorney.

He whispered something to her, but she shook her head.

“I don't have it anymore.””

“Who does?””

“I gave it to someone who said he could help me understand the original agreement.””

“Who?””

Vanessa's voice fell to a whisper.

“Elliot Mercer.””

Marcus felt the room tilt.

“Elliot?””

“He told me he had been investigating his wife's involvement in the old trust. He said he needed the letter to determine whether his wife had been telling the truth.””

Rachel frowned.

“When did you give it to him?””

“Three years ago.””

“Did he return it?””

“No.””

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

“Why would he take a letter that could help identify what happened to his wife's brother?””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

“Because he told me he knew where Daniel was.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus leaned forward slowly.

“What did he say?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“He said Daniel was alive when he left the company. He said someone had arranged for him to disappear, and that the person responsible had been protecting the truth ever since.””

“Who?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He wouldn't tell me.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You let a man who claimed to know what happened to my father take the only letter that might explain it?””

“I thought he was trying to help.””

“And then you tried to have me arrested.””

Vanessa flinched.

“I didn't know who you were at first. When I realized your name was connected to the acquisition, I panicked. I thought you had come to claim the shares and expose everything before I could understand what my father had done.””

“So you decided to discredit me.””

“Yes.””

The admission hung in the room.

Marcus studied her face.

“Why the fraud allegation?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I knew the police would have to investigate. I thought if I could make you look dishonest, the board would hesitate to trust your claims.””

Rachel's expression turned cold.

“You knowingly made allegations without evidence.””

“I was desperate.””

“You caused a man to be arrested because you feared what he might discover.””

Vanessa covered her face with both hands.

For the first time, she looked less like the powerful executive who had confronted Marcus in his driveway and more like a frightened woman who had finally run out of excuses.

Marcus stood.

“I'm not asking you to confess to things you don't know. I'm asking you to give us everything you have concerning Thomas, Daniel, and the shareholder agreement.””

Vanessa lowered her hands.

“I'll cooperate.””

“Then tell me where Elliot is.””

“I don't know. He stopped answering my calls six months ago.””

Marcus glanced at Rachel.

“Do you have any records of his last contact with you?””

Vanessa nodded.

She took out her phone and opened a message thread.

The last message from Elliot was dated four months earlier.

*THE LETTER CONFIRMS THE ORIGINAL AGREEMENT WAS NEVER TERMINATED. DON'T CONTACT ME AGAIN.*

Marcus read the words twice.

Then he noticed a second message beneath it.

It had been sent only minutes before their meeting.

*HE KNOWS ABOUT DANIEL. IF YOU TELL HIM EVERYTHING, YOU'LL NEVER SEE YOUR FATHER'S LETTER AGAIN.*

Marcus looked up.

“Who sent this?””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“I don't know.””

Rachel took the phone and photographed the screen.

“Did you receive any calls from the same number?””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“How many?””

“Three.””

“When was the last one?””

Vanessa checked the call log.

“Yesterday morning.””

Marcus remembered the police arriving at his house.

He remembered the handcuffs.

The recording.

The smile on Vanessa's face.

“Did the caller know about my arrest?””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Yes.””

“Did they tell you to call the police?””

Her silence was answer enough.

Rachel's expression hardened.

“Vanessa, this is important. Did someone instruct you to make the allegation?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not directly. They told me that if I could establish a pattern of suspicious behavior, the board would delay the acquisition review. They said the arrest would be enough to make you look unreliable.””

Marcus felt anger rise, but he kept his voice controlled.

“Who was the caller?””

“I don't know.””

“Then we'll find out.””

He turned toward the door.

Vanessa called after him.

“Marcus.””

He stopped.

She stood slowly.

“I know I can't undo what I did. But I need you to understand something. I never wanted Daniel to disappear. I never wanted your father to lose his shares.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Intentions don't erase consequences.””

“I know.””

“And neither does fear.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

Marcus left the room with Rachel beside him.

In the hallway, Rachel spoke quietly.

“Her admission changes everything. We need to preserve the recording and notify the appropriate authorities about the false allegation and the missing documents.””

Marcus nodded.

“Do it.””

His phone vibrated.

David Chen.

Marcus answered.

“David?””

“Marcus, we traced the last known activity on Elliot Mercer's corporate access account.””

“And?””

“The account was used to download the original shareholder files three years ago. The same week Vanessa says she gave him your father's letter.””

Marcus stopped walking.

“Where did the download go?””

David hesitated.

“A private storage server registered to a medical research company in Pennsylvania.””

“Medical research?””

“Yes. The company is called Mercer Biomedical Holdings.””

Marcus stared at Rachel.

“Who owns it?””

David's answer came slowly.

“The registered owner is Daniel Mercer.””

Marcus felt the floor shift beneath him.

Daniel Mercer had vanished twenty-nine years ago.

His accounts had supposedly remained untouched.

His company interests had been erased from the shareholder records.

Yet a medical research company bearing his name had been registered under his ownership.

“David,” Marcus said, “find out whether Daniel Mercer is alive.””

“I've already started.””

Marcus ended the call.

Rachel watched him.

“If Daniel is alive, we need to establish where he is and whether he wants contact.””

Marcus nodded.

He looked through the glass wall into the conference room.

Vanessa was still seated at the table, staring at her phone.

For years, she had used fear to protect her father's legacy.

Now she had admitted that someone else had been directing her actions.

Someone who knew about the acquisition, the old shareholder agreement, and the missing letter.

Someone who had warned her that Marcus would never see the truth if she spoke.

Marcus turned toward the elevator.

He had spent his entire life believing his biological father had disappeared before he could know him.

Now he was beginning to suspect that Daniel Mercer had never truly disappeared.

May you like

He had simply been hidden.

And the person who had hidden him might still be controlling the company Marcus now owned.
