Chapter 7: The Face Behind The Final Betrayal

Margaret stared at the photograph on her phone.

The rain outside continued falling, but she no longer heard it.

The entire mansion seemed to disappear.

There was only the image.

Thomas standing beneath the streetlights outside a hotel.

And beside him…

Someone else.

Someone she never expected.

Someone who had spent the entire night standing beside her, defending her, and helping expose Rachel’s plan.

Evelyn.

Margaret slowly lowered the phone.

Sophie noticed immediately.

“Grandma?””

Margaret did not answer.

Her silence was louder than any accusation.

Sophie stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Margaret looked at Evelyn.

The woman who had brought the evidence.

The woman who had claimed loyalty.

The woman who had revealed secrets everyone else wanted hidden.

Evelyn looked confused.

“Margaret?””

For the first time that evening, Margaret saw fear in Evelyn’s eyes.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“You know Thomas,” Margaret said.

The room froze.

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“I told you I worked with him.””

“No.””

Margaret held up the phone.

“I mean you know him differently.””

Evelyn looked at the image.

Then she became silent.

That silence answered everything.

Sophie looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Rachel, standing across the room, suddenly laughed.

A quiet, bitter laugh.

Everyone turned toward her.

“What?””

Rachel shook her head.

“I can’t believe it.””

Margaret looked at her.

“Believe what?””

Rachel stared at Evelyn.

“All this time, you thought she was helping you?””

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“Rachel, don’t.””

But Rachel continued.

“She’s the one who started this.””

The accusation changed the entire atmosphere.

Daniel looked shocked.

“No.””

Rachel looked at him.

“You think Thomas did everything?””

She smiled.

“You really think he’s that smart?””

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

“Rachel.””

Rachel looked at her.

“You wanted the truth.””

She gestured toward Evelyn.

“There it is.””

Evelyn immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her.””

Margaret’s voice remained calm.

“Then explain.””

Evelyn opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was enough.

Sophie looked hurt.

“Evelyn…”

The older woman looked down.

“I can explain.””

Margaret nodded.

“Then explain.””

Evelyn took a slow breath.

“I did meet Thomas.””

“When?””

“Before tonight.””

“How many times?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Several.””

Sophie looked away.

The disappointment on her face was clear.

Margaret noticed.

She had seen that expression before.

The expression of someone realizing the person they trusted was not who they thought.

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at Margaret.

“Because I was trying to find out what he was planning.””

Rachel immediately laughed.

“Of course.””

She crossed her arms.

“That’s the excuse everyone uses.””

Evelyn ignored her.

“I knew something was wrong months ago.””

Margaret studied her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Evelyn looked down.

“Because I didn’t have proof.””

Margaret nodded slowly.

“That sounds familiar.””

The words were quiet.

But they hurt.

Because Margaret remembered every person who had chosen silence.

Rachel.

Daniel.

Claire.

Now Evelyn.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

Everyone had waited until the damage was already done.

Evelyn swallowed.

“I was wrong.””

Margaret looked at her.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised Evelyn.

“I should have told you.””

“You should have.””

“But I was trying to protect you.””

Margaret shook her head.

“No.””

Evelyn looked up.

“You were trying to protect me from the truth.””

The sentence silenced the room.

Because it was true.

And Margaret finally understood something.

Secrets were not always kept because people wanted to hurt someone.

Sometimes they were kept because people believed they knew what another person could handle.

But that was still a choice.

And choices had consequences.

Margaret looked back at the photograph.

“Who sent this?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel spoke.

“Thomas.””

Everyone looked at her.

Rachel’s expression had changed.

For the first time, she was not defending herself.

She was afraid.

“He sent it to you?””

Margaret asked.

Rachel nodded.

“He wanted me to see it.””

“Why?””

Rachel looked toward the window.

“Because he wants everyone fighting each other.””

Margaret understood.

Thomas had spent months creating divisions.

Margaret against Rachel.

Margaret against Claire.

Everyone against everyone.

While they were fighting, he was moving behind the scenes.

“He’s not trying to take the company,” Margaret whispered.

Sophie looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

Margaret looked at the documents.

“He’s trying to make sure nobody is left strong enough to stop him.””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“That’s exactly what he does.””

Everyone turned.

“You know him.””

Evelyn looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

Margaret waited.

Finally, Evelyn spoke.

“Before I worked for you, I worked for Thomas.””

A shocked silence followed.

Sophie frowned.

“You worked for him?””

Evelyn nodded.

“He hired me when I was younger.””

Margaret stared.

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because I left that job.””

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at the floor.

“Because I discovered he was hiding money.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

Margaret noticed.

“You knew.””

Rachel looked away.

“Yes.””

The room became even quieter.

Margaret looked at Rachel.

“You knew Thomas had done this before?””

Rachel whispered:

“I knew he wasn’t honest.””

“Then why trust him?””

Rachel’s eyes filled with frustration.

“Because he was the first person who told me I mattered.””

Nobody expected that answer.

Not even Rachel.

The words came out like a confession.

“I know how it sounds.””

Margaret said nothing.

Rachel continued.

“You all think I only wanted money.””

She shook her head.

“I wanted someone to see me.””

Her voice broke.

“And Thomas did.””

Margaret looked at her.

Even after everything Rachel had done, she understood the danger of that.

Manipulators rarely began by demanding something.

They began by giving someone exactly what they were desperate to receive.

Attention.

Validation.

A feeling of importance.

Thomas had not created Rachel’s anger.

He had simply learned how to use it.

Margaret turned to Evelyn.

“What does Thomas want now?””

Evelyn looked at the message.

“He wants you alone.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Evelyn hesitated.

Then said:

“He wants something you have.””

Margaret frowned.

“The company?””

“No.””

Evelyn looked directly at her.

“Something more important.””

The room became still.

“What?””

Evelyn’s voice lowered.

“The original ownership documents.””

Margaret froze.

Those documents were not stored at the company.

They were personal.

The original papers from when she first built the business.

The documents proving the history of ownership.

The documents only a few people knew existed.

“Why would Thomas need those?””

Evelyn answered quietly.

“Because without them, he cannot prove his claim.””

Margaret understood.

Thomas was not just trying to remove her.

He was trying to rewrite history.

To make himself look like the true founder.

Sophie stepped closer.

“Then don’t go meet him.””

Margaret looked at her.

“I have to.””

“No.””

Sophie shook her head.

“He wants you to come alone.””

Margaret nodded.

“I know.””

“Then it’s a trap.””

Margaret looked toward the door.

“Yes.””

The answer surprised Sophie.

“Then why?””

Margaret picked up her coat.

“Because if he believes he has already won…”

She looked at everyone.

“…he will finally stop hiding.””

Daniel frowned.

“What are you saying?””

Margaret reached toward her smartwatch.

The small red light blinked.

Everyone stared.

Sophie smiled slightly.

“You’re recording.””

Margaret nodded.

“I learned something tonight.””

She looked at Rachel.

Then Evelyn.

Then the documents.

“People who think they control the story always talk too much.””

Rachel looked uneasy.

Evelyn whispered:

“You’re going to let him reveal himself.””

Margaret put on her coat.

“No.””

She opened the door.

“I’m going to make sure he has nowhere left to hide.””

Outside, the storm waited.

Margaret stepped into the cold night.

But before she reached the car, her phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Thomas.

*Come alone. Bring the original documents.*

She stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

May you like

This one made her stop.

*And bring the person you trust most. Because they are the one who will decide whether you leave.*
