Chapter 4: The Secret Keeper Who Sold The Truth
The name on Rachel’s phone remained glowing in the darkness of the mansion.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody needed to.
The silence itself was an answer.
Margaret stared at the screen, unable to move.
For twenty years, she had trusted that person with the most private parts of her life.
Family records.
Business decisions.
Personal struggles.
Everything.
And now that same name was appearing on Rachel’s phone on the night everything collapsed.
Sophie looked at her grandmother.
“Grandma… who is it?””
Margaret slowly lowered her eyes.
Her voice was quiet.
“Thomas.””
A wave of confusion moved through the room.
Sophie frowned.
“Thomas?””
Margaret nodded.
“Thomas Reed.””
The name meant something to the older guests.
Several people exchanged shocked looks.
Because Thomas Reed was not just another employee.
He had been Margaret’s closest advisor for decades.
The man who had helped her build the family company.
The man who had organized her meetings.
The man who knew every account, every contract, and every weakness.
Rachel had not just found someone to help her.
She had found the person who knew where all the doors were unlocked.
Rachel quickly grabbed her phone.
“Everyone needs to stop making assumptions.””
But nobody was listening the same way anymore.
Earlier that night, every word Rachel said sounded convincing.
Now every word sounded like a defense.
Margaret looked at her.
“How long?””
Rachel said nothing.
“How long have you been working with Thomas?””
Rachel clenched her jaw.
“I haven’t.””
Margaret glanced at the phone.
“Then why is he calling you?””
Rachel looked down.
The screen stopped ringing.
A moment later, a message appeared.
Everyone saw Rachel read it.
Her face changed.
Sophie noticed.
“What did he say?””
Rachel locked her phone.
“Nothing.””
“That’s not true,” Sophie replied.
Rachel looked at her sharply.
“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””
Sophie stepped forward.
“Then explain it.””
Rachel laughed quietly.
“You really think this is simple? You think your grandmother is the only person who has been hurt?””
Margaret watched her carefully.
She recognized that tone.
The tone of someone who was preparing to justify everything.
Rachel turned toward the guests.
“For years, everyone saw Margaret as some kind of hero.””
She gestured around the mansion.
“The generous woman. The powerful woman. The person who saved everyone.””
Her eyes moved back to Margaret.
“But nobody ever asked what it was like living under her shadow.””
The room remained silent.
Rachel continued.
“I watched people praise her while ignoring everyone else.””
Margaret’s expression softened slightly.
“Rachel…”
“No.””
Rachel shook her head.
“Tonight you want the truth? Fine.””
She pointed toward the papers.
“You built an empire, Margaret. But you forgot something.””
“What?””
“That people inside your empire had feelings.””
The words hung in the air.
For a moment, Margaret did not respond.
Because there was a small piece of truth hidden inside Rachel’s anger.
And that made the betrayal even harder to understand.
Margaret had spent her life building something.
But maybe she had not noticed the people who felt left behind.
However, regret did not erase responsibility.
“You were hurt,” Margaret said.
Rachel looked surprised.
“But you chose to hurt others.””
Rachel looked away.
That was the first moment she had no immediate answer.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“There’s something everyone should see.””
She reached into her bag again.
Rachel immediately reacted.
“No.””
The room turned toward her.
Evelyn raised an eyebrow.
“You know what this is?””
Rachel froze.
A few seconds passed.
Then Margaret understood.
“You’ve seen it before.””
Rachel remained silent.
Margaret looked at Evelyn.
“What is it?””
Evelyn pulled out a small flash drive.
“This contains copies of emails and private messages between Rachel and Thomas.””
The guests reacted immediately.
Rachel’s expression hardened.
“You stole private information.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Margaret.
“I protected information that someone was trying to destroy.””
Margaret took the flash drive.
“Where did you get this?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“From the company server.””
Daniel looked alarmed.
“You accessed the company server?””
“I did,” Evelyn replied.
“Because someone had already accessed it before me.””
The room went quiet.
Margaret looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
Evelyn took a breath.
“Someone had been deleting records.””
Rachel’s face changed.
Not shock.
Recognition.
Margaret noticed immediately.
“You knew.””
Rachel looked away.
“I suspected.””
“You suspected?””
Margaret’s voice became colder.
“You suspected someone was destroying my company records and you said nothing?””
Rachel stepped back.
“You never listened to me.””
Margaret stared at her.
“That is your excuse?””
Rachel’s silence was enough.
Sophie looked between them.
“I don’t understand.””
Evelyn turned toward her.
“Someone was trying to erase evidence before Margaret could find it.””
She looked at Rachel.
“And Rachel wasn’t working alone.””
The room shifted.
Everyone looked toward Daniel.
He immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Margaret looked at him.
“You knew.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I knew Rachel was angry.””
“That is not what I asked.””
Daniel looked down.
“I knew she was meeting Thomas.””
Margaret closed her eyes briefly.
Another betrayal.
Another person she had trusted.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of Rachel?””
He hesitated.
Then answered:
“Yes.””
Rachel looked at him with disbelief.
“You’re blaming me?””
Daniel stared back.
“You told me if I didn’t cooperate, you would destroy my life.””
The room went silent.
Sophie covered her mouth.
Margaret looked at Rachel.
“What did you threaten him with?””
Rachel said nothing.
“Rachel.””
Finally, Rachel spoke.
“I was angry.””
“That is not an answer.””
Rachel’s eyes filled with frustration.
“I was tired of being powerless!””
The shout echoed through the mansion.
Everyone froze.
Rachel’s carefully controlled image disappeared completely.
“I spent years watching people decide what happened around me.””
She pointed at Margaret.
“You had money.””
She pointed at Daniel.
“You had your position.””
Then she looked around the room.
“Everyone had something.””
Her voice cracked.
“And I had nothing.””
Margaret looked at her.
“That is not true.””
Rachel laughed.
“Of course you would say that.””
“No,” Margaret replied.
“Because I remember when you had nothing.””
Rachel went still.
Margaret continued.
“I remember helping you when you needed a place to stay.””
The guests looked surprised.
“I remember paying your medical bills.””
Rachel’s expression changed.
“I remember introducing you to opportunities.””
Margaret paused.
“And I remember believing you were family.””
That final sentence hurt more than any accusation.
Rachel looked away.
For a brief moment, she looked less like an enemy.
And more like someone who knew exactly what she had destroyed.
Then her phone buzzed again.
This time, she looked afraid to read it.
Margaret noticed.
“Open it.””
Rachel didn’t move.
“Rachel.””
Slowly, Rachel unlocked the phone.
She read the message.
Then her face turned pale.
Sophie stepped closer.
“What happened?””
Rachel looked at Margaret.
Her voice was barely audible.
“Thomas is gone.””
Margaret frowned.
“What?””
“He left.””
“Where?””
Rachel stared at the screen.
Then she turned the phone around.
The message was short.
Only one sentence.
*I’m sorry. They found out before we were ready.*
Margaret’s heart sank.
Because she understood something immediately.
Thomas was not running because he was afraid.
He was running because he knew the investigation had started.
And he was taking something with him.
“Before we were ready?”” Sophie repeated.
Margaret looked at Rachel.
“What were you planning?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
But her silence confirmed the worst.
Margaret walked toward the window.
Outside, the storm continued.
The mansion lights reflected against the glass.
For years, she thought the greatest danger to her family was greed.
She was wrong.
The greatest danger was the person who knew exactly how much everyone trusted.
Then Evelyn’s phone rang.
She looked at the caller ID.
Her face immediately changed.
Margaret noticed.
“Who is it?””
Evelyn slowly raised her eyes.
“It’s the company’s legal department.””
“Why would they call you?””
Evelyn answered in a whisper.
“Because someone just filed an emergency claim.””
Margaret felt a chill.
“What kind of claim?””
Evelyn looked at the papers on the table.
Then at Rachel.
Then at Margaret.
“A claim stating that you are no longer legally capable of controlling your own company.””
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because the attack was no longer hidden.
Rachel had not just tried to steal Margaret’s money.
She had prepared to take away her voice.
And somewhere out there, Thomas Reed was carrying the final piece of the plan.
