Chapter 8: Arthur’s Secret
The file sat on my screen.
*ARTHUR_HALE_FULL_HISTORY.pdf*
Arthur stared at it as if someone had just placed a loaded gun on the desk between us.
“Don't open that,” he said.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“I don't know what's in it.””
“Neither do I.””
“Exactly.””
I clicked the file.
The first page loaded.
A photograph of Arthur.
His full name.
Date of birth.
University.
Employment history.
Everything looked ordinary.
Too ordinary.
I scrolled.
Bank accounts.
Property records.
Business interests.
Loans.
The file had been compiled with frightening precision.
Then I saw a section marked:
*FINANCIAL PRESSURE POINTS*
I stopped.
Arthur moved closer.
“Claire…”
His voice was different now.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
I looked at him.
“What pressure points?””
He didn't answer.
I scrolled.
Two pages later, I found the first one.
*Personal guarantee — $680,000*
I frowned.
“What is this?””
Arthur's face tightened.
“Nothing.””
“Six hundred eighty thousand dollars is not nothing.””
“It was a business loan.””
“For what?””
“My startup.””
“Your software company?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Two years ago.””
“Why isn't it on your résumé?””
“It failed.””
I looked at the document.
The loan wasn't listed as defaulted.
It had been purchased.
By Blackridge Capital Holdings.
My stomach dropped.
“Kane bought your debt.””
Arthur closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
I kept reading.
*Payment obligation due upon change of controlling employment status.*
Then another line.
*Subject remains financially vulnerable until settlement.*
I turned toward him.
“You've been in debt to Kane.””
“Not directly.””
“He owns the debt.””
“Yes.””
“Since when?””
“About a year.””
“And you never told me.””
“I was embarrassed.””
I stared at him.
“You told me you had no significant debt.””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“With what?””
“My salary.””
“Could you?””
“No.””
I scrolled further.
There was a payment schedule.
Monthly installments.
Late payments.
A restructuring agreement.
Then another document appeared.
A private message.
*Arthur Hale will cooperate once personal obligations are used as leverage.*
I read it twice.
“That wasn't your agreement.””
“No.””
“Who wrote this?””
“I don't know.””
I turned the laptop toward Daniel.
He studied the screen.
His face hardened.
“That's Kane's language.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I saw the same phrasing in letters he sent your father.””
Arthur stared at the document.
“What did he want from me?””
Daniel pointed to the next page.
“Keep scrolling.””
I did.
The next heading appeared.
*RELATIONSHIP PROJECTION*
Underneath was a timeline.
Arthur meeting me.
First dinner.
First weekend trip.
First time I brought him to Northbridge without mentioning ownership.
First discussion of marriage.
My stomach turned.
“He tracked us.””
Daniel nodded.
“Someone did.””
I looked at Arthur.
“Did you ever notice anyone following you?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Did anyone ask about me?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“Victor.””
“What else?””
Arthur looked at the screen.
“He asked when you were happiest.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“He said emotional stability would make negotiations easier.””
The room went cold.
I looked at the next page.
There was one final instruction.
*If marriage occurs, obtain access to personal financial records, trust documents, and voting shares.*
I leaned back.
Arthur stood completely still.
“That's what he wanted.””
“Yes.””
“Through you.””
Arthur rubbed his face.
“Yes.””
The word came out broken.
I closed the laptop.
“Then tell me the truth.””
“I have.””
“No.””
I stood.
“You've told me pieces.””
“I've told you everything I know.””
“Then start at the beginning.””
Arthur looked at Daniel.
Daniel moved toward the warehouse door.
“I'll give you privacy.””
“No.””
I stopped him.
“Stay.””
Arthur looked surprised.
“I don't want another story where two men disappear into another room and decide what's best for me.””
Daniel gave a short nod.
Arthur sat down.
I remained standing.
“When did Kane first approach you?””
“Exactly?””
“October twelfth.””
“Where?””
“Outside my office.””
“What did he say?””
Arthur took a breath.
“He knew about my debt.””
“And?””
“He offered to buy it.””
I waited.
“In exchange for what?””
“He wanted introductions.””
“To whom?””
“Your father’s old contacts.””
I frowned.
“My father had been dead for years.””
“I know.””
“Then why would Kane need his contacts?””
“Because your father had worked with people who controlled freight terminals.””
Daniel nodded.
Arthur continued.
“Kane was trying to build a logistics portfolio.””
“And Northbridge?””
“He said Northbridge was the missing piece.””
“When did he mention me?””
“Two months later.””
“Before we met?””
“Yes.””
“How did he know you knew me?””
“I hadn't met you yet.””
I stared.
“Then how?””
“He had photographs.””
“Of me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel spoke.
“Your father wasn't the first one to protect your identity.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
“Your father arranged for parts of your personal information to be concealed after his death.””
“From whom?””
“Kane.””
I felt my pulse quicken.
“So Kane spent years trying to find me.””
“Yes.””
“And Arthur?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Arthur was useful because Kane discovered the family connection.””
I turned back to Arthur.
“When did you realize I was the woman Kane wanted?””
Arthur answered immediately.
“The week we met.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“You suspected.””
“I didn't know about Northbridge until later.””
“But you knew Kane was interested in me.””
“Yes.””
“And you still took me out.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Arthur's eyes filled with tears.
“Because I wanted to know you.””
“That isn't enough.””
“I know.””
“You could have walked away.””
“I should have.””
“Why didn't you?””
He looked at me for a long moment.
“Because the first time I met you, I forgot why I was supposed to be there.””
Silence.
“My mother had asked me to find out whether you were actually wealthy.””
He swallowed.
“I went to the café expecting to meet someone strategic.””
“And?””
“You spilled coffee on your own notebook.””
Despite everything, a tiny involuntary smile touched my mouth.
Arthur continued.
“You laughed at yourself.””
He shook his head.
“I thought, this woman has no idea who I am.””
“And that mattered?””
“Yes.””
“Until Kane called you again.””
His eyes fell.
“Yes.””
I walked toward the old warehouse window.
“You could have told me.””
“I was afraid you'd leave.””
“I would have.””
“I know.””
The honesty hurt.
Then Daniel spoke.
“There is something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked at Arthur.
“The contract didn't originate with Kane.””
Arthur frowned.
“What contract?””
“The one you found in the hotel file.””
Daniel pointed at the laptop.
“The forged acquisition agreement.””
Arthur stared.
“What about it?””
“Kane didn't create it.””
“Then who did?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Your future in-laws.””
The silence was immediate.
Arthur stood.
“My parents?””
Daniel nodded.
“They wanted to pressure Claire into taking control of Havenridge through a merger.””
Arthur shook his head.
“No.””
“It's true.””
“My mother wouldn't.””
“She already tried.””
“How?””
I looked at Arthur.
“She knew about the acquisition before Kane ever called.””
Arthur's expression changed.
Daniel continued.
“She also knew Danielle had access to Claire's files.””
Arthur's face hardened.
“You're saying my mother gave Kane the information?””
“Not directly.””
“Then who?””
Daniel pulled a folded document from his coat.
“Danielle.””
He handed it to me.
A transfer record.
Danielle had received a payment of $75,000.
The sender was Eleanor Hale.
Date: four months ago.
I stared at it.
Arthur went pale.
“She paid Danielle.””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“To copy the trust records.””
Arthur sat down hard.
“No.””
I placed the document on the table.
“Your mother didn't want my money.””
Arthur looked up.
“She wanted the trust.””
I nodded.
“And Kane wanted Northbridge.””
Daniel added quietly,
“They were working toward the same goal from different directions.””
The pieces fell together with brutal clarity.
Eleanor wanted control of the family company.
Kane wanted control of Northbridge.
Arthur was the connection between them.
And I had been the person standing in the middle.
My phone buzzed.
Maya.
I answered.
“Tell me you have good news.””
“I have something better.””
“What?””
“We traced the person who created the forged signature.””
“Who?””
Maya hesitated.
“Your father’s old attorney.””
My breath caught.
“Margaret Bell?””
“Yes.””
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It gets stranger.””
“How?””
“Her office has been closed for three years.””
“Then who accessed her system?””
“That's the problem.””
“What?””
“The login was used yesterday.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Where?””
Maya's voice dropped.
“Your father's old private storage facility.””
My heart began pounding.
“What storage facility?””
“The one listed in the trust documents.””
I stared at the brass key.
Daniel saw my expression.
“What?””
I held up the key.
“You told me my father hid the trust where Kane couldn't find it.””
“Yes.””
“This key opens something.””
Daniel nodded.
“I believe it does.””
Maya continued.
“Claire, there's one more thing.””
“What?””
“I found the original trust expiration record.””
“And?””
“The trust didn't expire when Northbridge reached twenty-five million.””
I froze.
“What did it expire at?””
Maya took a breath.
“Fifty million.””
I looked at the financial reports.
Northbridge's current valuation.
Thirty-eight million.
My father's handwritten note.
Kane waiting.
I suddenly understood why he had returned now.
We were close.
Very close.
He didn't need the company today.
He needed to control what happened before we reached the threshold.
Maya's voice came through again.
“And Claire?””
“Yes?””
“The storage facility was accessed tonight.””
My hand closed around the brass key.
“By whom?””
A pause.
“Someone using Arthur Hale's identification.””
Arthur shot to his feet.
“That wasn't me.””
I stared at him.
Then my phone chimed again.
A photograph arrived.
It showed the entrance to the storage facility.
A man stood outside.
Arthur.
Wearing the same coat he had on tonight.
The timestamp was eleven minutes earlier.
Arthur looked at the screen.
“That isn't possible.””
I looked at the photograph.
Then at Arthur.
May you like
For the first time, I wasn't sure whether I was looking at the man I loved—
or the man who had just opened the door to my father's final secret.
