Chapter 3: The Missing Footage

Robert Brooks ended the call and stood motionless beside the window.

Below him, traffic flowed through the afternoon streets. Sunlight reflected off the glass towers, and the city continued its ordinary business as though nothing had happened.

Inside the suite, however, everything had changed.

Danielle adjusted Grace's blanket.

“Dad?””

Robert turned.

“The security team discovered a problem with one of the camera files.””

“What kind of problem?””

“The recording from the moment after the slap appears to have been altered in the system they initially reviewed.””

Danielle's face went pale.

“Altered how?””

“They're investigating whether the file was replaced, moved, or incorrectly exported. They haven't established exactly what happened yet.””

“But you said they had the footage.””

“They have a recording showing the incident. The concern is that the original file associated with one camera is no longer appearing where it should.””

Danielle felt a chill spread through her chest.

“So someone deleted it?””

“We don't know that yet.””

“Dad, if the footage disappears, she'll say I made everything up.””

Robert crossed the room and crouched beside her chair.

“Listen to me. One missing file does not erase the witnesses, the other cameras, or the evidence already preserved. We will not accuse anyone until we know what happened.””

Danielle nodded, but her fingers had tightened around Grace's blanket.

She had spent years learning to trust evidence more than promises. She had seen people apologize only after being caught, and she had watched others deny things that everyone in the room had witnessed.

The thought that someone might manipulate the evidence made her feel as though she were back in the lobby, surrounded by people who could see her pain but chose to look away.

Robert gently touched her hand.

“Do you want me to take Grace for a few minutes while you rest?””

“No.”” Danielle looked down at her daughter.

“I want to hold her.””

“Then hold her.””

He stood and walked to the door.

“I'm going downstairs.””

“Dad, please don't let this turn into a war.””

Robert paused.

“I'm not fighting for revenge, Danielle. I'm making sure the truth has a fair chance to be heard.””

He left with Daniel Mercer.

As the door closed, Danielle leaned back and listened to the soft hum of the air-conditioning.

Grace's breathing was steady against her chest.

Danielle tried to focus on that simple, reassuring rhythm.

Then her phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unfamiliar number.

You should have left when they asked you to. Now you're making things difficult for people who can make your life very uncomfortable.

Danielle stared at the screen.

A second message arrived.

Think about your baby before you destroy your family's reputation.

Her stomach tightened.

She took a screenshot, then forwarded both messages to her father.

A moment later, he called.

“Did you receive those from someone you know?””

“No.””

“Don't respond. Keep the originals, and don't delete anything. Daniel will document them.””

“Dad, who would send something like this?””

“I don't know yet.””

“What if they're right? What if this becomes a huge public mess?””

Robert's voice softened.

“Then we'll deal with the facts as they come. You are not responsible for protecting people from the consequences of their own decisions.””

Danielle swallowed.

“I just wanted to sit down somewhere quiet.””

“I know, sweetheart.””

“I didn't want any of this.””

“I know that, too.””

After the call, Danielle placed her phone on the table and looked toward the door.

For the first time, she wondered whether the confrontation had been about more than Vanessa's arrogance.

Why had Marcus reacted so quickly?

Why had he been so determined to remove her before reviewing the footage?

And who could have known that she would call her father?

She had no answers.

Downstairs, Robert entered the hotel's security office.

The room was small and windowless, filled with monitors showing different views of the property. A wall clock ticked above a desk cluttered with incident reports.

The head of security, Leonard Price, stood beside a workstation with a worried expression.

“Mr. Brooks, thank you for coming.””

Robert placed his hands on the desk.

“Show me exactly what you found.””

Leonard opened the surveillance software.

“This is the camera covering the seating alcove. We have the original recording from before the incident, but the export created for the initial review is missing several seconds.””

“Which seconds?””

“The period immediately following the slap, when Mr. Reed approaches Ms. Brooks.””

“Does that section exist on the storage server?””

“We're checking the underlying archive now.””

Robert looked at him.

“Who has access to modify or export recordings?””

“Three senior security staff members, the security director, and administrators with the appropriate credentials. Certain IT personnel also have maintenance access.””

“Was the system undergoing maintenance today?””

“Not according to our schedule.””

“Then I want the access logs preserved. No one should make changes to the system until the technical team has completed a forensic copy.””

Leonard nodded.

“Already initiated.””

Robert leaned closer to the monitor.

“Show me the other camera angles.””

Leonard brought up the entrance camera.

The footage showed Danielle entering the lobby with Grace. She paused beside the seating alcove and checked her phone.

Vanessa entered several minutes later.

She walked past the reception desk, glanced toward Danielle, and changed direction.

The two women exchanged words.

Then Vanessa raised her hand and struck Danielle.

The image was clear enough to establish the physical contact.

A second camera captured Marcus approaching.

Robert watched the manager speak to Vanessa first. He then watched Marcus turn toward Danielle, gesture at the entrance, and point toward the doors.

“Is there audio?”” Robert asked.

“Not from that camera. The lobby microphone system may have captured some of the conversation, but we need to verify whether it records continuously.””

“Find out.””

Leonard switched to another angle.

This camera overlooked the reception desk.

Ethan appeared in the background, visibly reacting to the slap. A few seconds later, Marcus turned toward him and spoke sharply.

Ethan stepped away.

Robert watched the sequence twice.

“Get his statement independently,” he said.

“I don't want him questioned in front of Mr. Reed.””

“Understood.””

At that moment, the office door opened.

Marcus entered, his face drawn and his tie slightly crooked.

“Mr. Brooks, I need to explain what happened.””

Robert didn't turn from the monitor.

“Then explain it.””

Marcus glanced at Leonard.

“Could we speak privately?””

“No. Mr. Price is responsible for security, and we're discussing a security incident.””

Marcus hesitated.

“I was trying to prevent a disturbance.””

Robert pointed at the screen.

“Is that what you call this?””

The recording showed Danielle standing quietly beside the console, holding her newborn, while Marcus directed her toward the entrance.

“I made a judgment based on the information available,” Marcus said.

“You made a judgment before establishing the facts.””

“I admit I could have handled the situation differently.””

“Differently?””

Robert finally turned.

“A woman struck another guest in front of witnesses. You ignored the injured guest's account, threatened to remove her, and ordered an employee who witnessed the incident to return to his station when he attempted to speak. Which part of that do you consider a minor error?””

Marcus's cheeks flushed.

“I was concerned about the hotel's reputation.””

“And what about the hotel's responsibility to its guests?””

“I understand that now.””

Robert's expression remained steady.

“Understanding it after the owner arrives is not the same as understanding it when someone needs your help.””

Marcus looked down.

“I apologize.””

“An apology is a beginning, not a resolution.””

Robert turned back to Leonard.

“Has the original footage been recovered?””

“Not yet, sir. The technical team has found an irregularity in the export history. We're comparing the archived files with the system logs.””

Marcus shifted uneasily.

Robert noticed.

“Mr. Reed, do you know anything about the missing footage?””

“No.””

“Have you requested that any recording be removed, edited, or withheld?””

“Absolutely not.””

“Have you asked anyone to protect Mrs. Whitmore from the consequences of this incident?””

Marcus took a breath.

“I spoke with her after the confrontation because she is a regular guest. I wanted to avoid a public dispute.””

“That wasn't my question.””

“No, sir.””

Robert studied him.

“Then you should have no objection to a complete review.””

“Of course not.””

“Good. Until that review is complete, you will not direct the investigation or contact witnesses about their statements. The board will determine the appropriate employment process after reviewing the findings.””

Marcus's face tightened.

“Am I being suspended?””

“You're being removed from operational oversight of this incident. The board will decide what happens next.””

Marcus looked as though he wanted to argue, but Daniel Mercer entered before he could speak.

“Robert, we have an update.””

Daniel held a tablet.

“The technical team has located an access record showing that the relevant camera export was initiated from a terminal assigned to the security administration office. The user account belongs to a senior security supervisor.””

Leonard frowned.

“Which supervisor?””

Daniel showed him the screen.

Leonard's expression changed.

“That's Thomas Vale.””

“Who is he?”” Robert asked.

“Our deputy director of security,” Leonard replied.

“He's worked here for six years.””

“Where is he now?””

“He was scheduled to be on duty until six. He left the building about twenty minutes ago.””

Robert checked the clock.

“Has anyone contacted him?””

“Not yet. We wanted to confirm the access record first.””

“Good. Preserve everything and have counsel coordinate the next steps. Do not confront him without a documented plan.””

Marcus stared at the tablet.

“I've worked with Thomas for years. He wouldn't tamper with evidence.””

Robert looked at him.

“Then an investigation will establish that.””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Daniel continued.

“There is another issue. Mrs. Whitmore's attorney has contacted the hotel demanding that we issue a written apology to her and remove Ms. Brooks from the premises.””

Robert gave a short, humorless breath.

“On what basis?””

“She alleges that Danielle deliberately provoked her and threatened to have her husband blacklisted.””

“Has her attorney seen the footage?””

“Not the hotel's footage.””

“Then we will respond through counsel and provide no unsupported conclusions.””

Daniel nodded.

“I also recommend that we document the threatening messages sent to Danielle.””

Robert's expression changed instantly.

“What messages?””

Daniel explained what Danielle had received.

For several seconds, Robert said nothing.

Then he turned toward Leonard.

“Does the hotel have any connection to the number that sent them?””

“We can preserve the information Danielle provided and refer it to the appropriate authorities if necessary. We shouldn't assume the sender's identity without further evidence.””

“Agreed.””

Robert looked at Daniel.

“Make sure Danielle knows she should not respond. Arrange whatever security support she wants while she's here, without making her feel like she's under surveillance.””

“Of course.””

As Daniel stepped aside, Leonard's phone rang.

He answered, listened, and immediately straightened.

“Yes. Put him through.””

A moment later, he activated the speaker.

A man's voice filled the room.

“Mr. Price? This is Thomas Vale.””

Leonard glanced at Robert.

“Thomas, we're reviewing the security system access records from this afternoon. We need you to return to the hotel and assist with the investigation.””

A pause followed.

“I'm not coming back.””

Robert moved closer to the desk.

“Mr. Vale, this is Robert Brooks.””

The silence on the line became heavier.

“Yes, sir,” Thomas finally replied.

“I understand that your account was used to initiate an export involving the lobby camera. Can you explain why?””

“I didn't delete anything.””

“I didn't ask whether you deleted anything. I asked why your account was used.””

Thomas breathed sharply into the phone.

“I was following instructions.””

Leonard looked up.

“Whose instructions?””

Another pause.

Then Thomas said, “I was told to remove the section that showed the manager approaching the woman with the baby.””

Marcus's face went white.

Robert's voice remained controlled.

“Who told you to do that?””

Thomas hesitated.

“I don't want to get involved in this.””

“You already are involved. If you have information about an attempt to alter evidence, you need to provide it through the proper channels.””

Thomas's breathing became audible.

Finally, he spoke.

“Mrs. Whitmore called someone before she left the lobby. She said her husband would handle the problem.

A few minutes later, Mr. Reed came to the security office and asked whether we could keep the footage from becoming a public issue.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“That is not what happened!””

Robert raised a hand, stopping him.

He addressed Thomas again.

“Did Mr. Reed explicitly instruct you to delete or alter footage?””

“I didn't hear him say the word delete. He asked whether we could prepare a version that wouldn't embarrass the hotel.””

Leonard's jaw tightened.

Thomas continued.

“I told him I couldn't change the original recording. He said he only needed a clean export for the initial report. I thought I was preparing a shortened clip, not destroying anything.””

Robert looked at Leonard.

“Can the original be recovered?””

“We don't know yet. The export history suggests the source recording may still exist in the archive.””

“Then keep searching.””

Robert returned to the phone.

“Mr. Vale, do not delete any messages, emails, or work records relating to this incident. Counsel will contact you about a formal statement.””

Thomas sounded frightened.

“Am I going to lose my job?””

“That will depend on what the investigation establishes. Right now, the priority is preserving the evidence and determining exactly what occurred.””

The call ended.

Marcus stood rigid beside the desk.

“I never ordered anyone to destroy evidence,” he said.

Robert looked at him.

“Then the investigation should establish that.””

“I was trying to protect the hotel.””

“By preparing a misleading record?””

“I didn't know he would interpret it that way.””

Robert's voice grew colder.

“That's why we investigate actions rather than accepting convenient explanations.””

Marcus looked toward the door.

“Mr. Brooks, I've dedicated eleven years to this property.””

“And eleven years of service should have taught you that the person who needs protection most may not be the person with the most money.””

Marcus's shoulders sagged.

Robert turned away from him.

“Daniel, coordinate the review with the appropriate independent professionals. Leonard, secure the original files and all access records. No one involved should have unilateral control over the evidence.””

Both men nodded.

Robert left the security office and returned to the private suite.

Danielle was sitting by the window with Grace sleeping against her chest. A half-finished cup of tea rested on the table beside her.

She looked up immediately.

“Did you find out what happened?””

Robert sat beside her.

“We found evidence that someone attempted to prepare a shortened version of the footage. We're investigating why and who was responsible.””

Danielle's face tightened.

“Was it Marcus?””

“He asked for an export, according to one account. We still need to establish exactly what he requested and what happened to the original file.””

“Why would he do that?””

“We don't know whether he was trying to conceal misconduct or simply mishandled the reporting process. We'll establish the facts before drawing conclusions.””

Danielle stared at the sleeping baby.

“I thought the hardest part would be getting someone to believe me.””

Robert took her hand.

“Sometimes the hardest part is getting people to stop protecting the version of the story that benefits them.””

She looked at him.

“What happens now?””

“Now we preserve the evidence, listen to the witnesses, and let the facts determine the next steps.””

Danielle nodded slowly.

Then her phone vibrated again.

This time, the message came from a familiar number.

It was Vanessa.

You have no idea what you've started. My husband has just learned who your father is, and he says there is something Robert Brooks needs to explain before this goes any further.

Danielle read the message twice.

“Dad?””

Robert took the phone.

He studied Vanessa's words, and for the first time that afternoon, his composure faltered.

Not because he was afraid of Vanessa.

Not because he was worried about the hotel.

But because he recognized the name of the person who had sent the message's implication into motion.

Richard Whitmore.

Robert had known him for nearly fifteen years.

And there was one business deal between them that had ended so badly that Robert had never told Danielle the full story.

He handed the phone back.

“Danielle,” he said carefully, “there's something about the Whitmores you need to know.””

She held Grace closer.

“What is it?””

Robert looked toward the door, making certain they were alone.

“Your father isn't the only person in this story with something to lose.””

And before he could explain, Daniel Mercer knocked urgently and entered with a sealed envelope.

“Robert,” he said, “this was delivered to the hotel office twenty minutes ago. It has your name on it.””

Robert opened the envelope.

Inside was a single sheet of paper bearing the letterhead of Whitmore Development.
