Chapter 9: The Woman Next Door

Helen Brooks opened her front door before I could knock a second time.

She stood in a pale yellow cardigan, her silver hair pinned neatly behind her ears. At seventy-four, she was still straight-backed and sharp-eyed, the kind of woman who remembered everyone's birthday and never forgot a debt.

For twenty years, she had been my neighbor.

She had held my hand at Samuel's funeral.

She had helped me carry groceries when my arthritis flared.

And she had apparently spent nearly three decades keeping a secret that could change my son's life.

When she saw Nick standing beside me, her expression shifted.

Then she noticed the notebook in his hand.

"Oh, Eleanor," she whispered.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"You knew.""

Helen looked down.

"Come inside.""

Nick didn't move.

"Not until you answer one question.""

Helen raised her eyes.

"Which question?""

"Who is Grace?""

For several seconds, she stared at him.

Then she stepped aside.

"Please. Come in.""

Her living room was exactly as I remembered it. The same floral curtains. The same polished wooden clock. The same framed photograph of her late husband beside the fireplace.

But the room felt different now.

Every object seemed to conceal something.

Helen sat in her favorite armchair and folded her hands in her lap.

"I've waited a long time for this conversation.""

Nick remained standing.

"Then you should have started it years ago.""

She flinched.

"You're right.""

"Did my father tell you about Grace?""

"Yes.""

"Did you help him hide her?""

Helen looked at me.

"I helped Samuel protect a child whose life was in danger.""

Nick's voice hardened.

"From Patricia.""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you tell us?""

"Because Samuel asked me not to. And because I believed he was right.""

I sat opposite her.

"Helen, I trusted you.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I know.""

"You came to my house after Samuel died. You helped me sort through his belongings. You sat at my kitchen table and told me he had been a good husband.""

"He was.""

"And all that time, you knew he had hidden a child.""

Helen shook her head.

"I knew he had protected one. I didn't know where Grace was after the adoption was finalized.""

"But you knew who she was.""

"Yes.""

I looked away.

It hurt to discover that my husband's secret had been shared with someone who had eaten at our table while I remained in the dark.

Helen leaned forward.

"Samuel wanted to tell you. He truly did. But Patricia had threatened to accuse him of kidnapping, and he was afraid that if the police investigated, Grace could be taken away from the family who had adopted her.""

Nick finally sat down.

"What family?""

Helen hesitated.

Then she opened a drawer beside her chair and removed a small envelope.

"I kept this because Samuel asked me to preserve it in case Grace ever needed to know the truth.""

Inside was a photograph of a young couple standing outside a modest house. The woman held a baby in a yellow blanket.

On the back was a handwritten note.

*Grace with David and Laura Morgan. March 1999.*

Nick stared at the photograph.

"The Morgans adopted her?""

Helen nodded.

"They were a kind couple who had struggled for years to have a child. Samuel knew David through his work. When Anna asked him to find a safe family, he thought of them.""

I studied the photograph.

The woman, Laura, was smiling down at the baby. The man had one hand resting gently on her shoulder.

"They look happy," I whispered.

"They were. They moved away several years later. David became a teacher, and Laura worked as a nurse.""

"Where did they go?""

Helen looked toward the window.

"That's the part Samuel never told me. He believed it was safer if I didn't know their new address.""

Nick leaned forward.

"Then how can we find them?""

Helen opened another drawer and removed a folded letter.

"Because Laura sent me this.""

The letter was dated twelve years earlier.

It contained a short note thanking Helen for helping arrange the adoption and explaining that Grace had grown into a bright, determined young woman.

She had studied nursing, volunteered at a community clinic, and dreamed of opening a center for families who couldn't afford medical care.

At the bottom, Laura had written:

Grace knows she was adopted. She has asked questions about her birth parents, but we have told her only what we know. If the time ever comes, I hope the truth will bring her peace rather than pain.

Nick read the letter twice.

"Where does she live now?""

Helen shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Did Laura give you a phone number?""

"She sent a Christmas card three years ago. I may still have it.""

She hurried to a cabinet and began searching through old envelopes.

While she searched, I noticed a photograph on the mantelpiece.

It showed Helen beside Samuel at a hospital charity event.

On the back, Samuel had written:

Thank you for helping me keep my promise.

I touched the frame.

"He trusted you.""

Helen returned with a small stack of cards.

"He trusted me because he knew I would never put Grace at risk.""

She handed Nick a Christmas card addressed to Helen from Laura Morgan.

A return address was printed in the corner.

A town several hours away.

Nick photographed it.

"We can start there.""

Helen nodded.

"But there's something else you need to know.""

We both looked at her.

"Patricia came to see me last month.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"She asked whether Samuel had left any documents about the adoption. She said she was trying to settle an old family matter.""

Nick's face hardened.

"What did you tell her?""

"That I knew nothing.""

"Did she believe you?""

"I don't think so.""

Helen took a trembling breath.

"She told me that if Grace ever learned the truth, she would lose everything. She said the adoption had been arranged illegally and that she had enough evidence to have the girl declared an impostor.""

Nick shook his head.

"She's lying.""

"Perhaps. But she sounded convinced.""

I looked at Helen.

"Why didn't you tell me she came here?""

"Because I didn't want to frighten you. I thought if I stayed quiet, she would eventually leave me alone.""

I let out a bitter breath.

"That's what I thought, too.""

The room fell silent.

Then Nick's phone rang.

An unknown number.

He answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke.

"Is this Nicholas Carter?""

"Yes.""

"My name is Laura Morgan. Helen Brooks gave me your number.""

Nick looked at me in astonishment.

"You're Grace's adoptive mother?""

"Yes. Helen said you were looking for information about Grace's birth family.""

Nick sat straighter.

"Can we speak with you?""

"Of course. But before we meet, I need to ask you something.""

"What?""

"Does Patricia Whitmore know you've found us?""

Nick glanced at Helen.

"She may suspect.""

Laura's voice became strained.

"Then we need to be careful. A woman came to our house two weeks ago asking about Grace. She claimed to be a family lawyer.""

"Patricia?""

"I don't know. She showed me a business card, but something felt wrong. She asked for Grace's birth certificate and wanted to know whether we still had the original adoption documents.""

Nick's expression darkened.

"Did you give her anything?""

"No. But she said Grace's adoption might be challenged because of an irregularity in the original paperwork.""

I felt sick.

"Can she do that?""

"I don't know," Laura replied.

"But I've contacted a lawyer. He believes the adoption is valid. Still, if Patricia has evidence that the birth records were falsified, she may try to create trouble.""

Nick leaned forward.

"Do you know where Grace is now?""

"She's working at a hospital in the city.""

My heart began to pound.

"She's here?""

"Yes. She moved back six months ago.""

Nick stared at me.

The child Samuel had protected was living in the same city where we had spent our lives.

Close enough that we might have passed her on the street without knowing who she was.

"Can we meet her?"" Nick asked.

Laura hesitated.

"Not without telling her the truth first. Grace is an adult, and she deserves to make that decision herself.""

"You're right," Nick said.

"We won't pressure her.""

Laura gave us an address and promised to contact Grace that evening.

When the call ended, Helen began to cry.

"I hope she forgives us," she whispered.

I looked at her.

"Forgives us for what?""

"For keeping her identity secret. For letting her grow up without knowing her father was alive.""

I shook my head slowly.

"That wasn't your decision alone.""

"But I helped Samuel make it.""

Nick stood and walked to the window.

For several moments, he watched the traffic move along the street.

Then he turned.

"Tomorrow, I want to meet Grace.""

Helen nodded.

"I'll help however I can.""

As we prepared to leave, she caught my hand.

"Eleanor, there's one more thing.""

I looked at her.

"Samuel asked me to tell you something if the secret ever came out.""

My throat tightened.

"What?""

She looked directly into my eyes.

"He said that if Grace ever returned, you must not judge her by what Patricia did. He said the child was innocent, and she deserved to know that someone had loved her before she was even born.""

Tears blurred my vision.

I thought of Samuel's last months. His tired smile. His restless nights. The way he had held my hand and promised that everything would be all right.

Perhaps he had known that one day his secret would come back to us.

Perhaps he had hoped that love would survive the truth.

Nick put his arm around my shoulders.

"We'll find her," he said.

But before we reached the front door, Helen's landline rang.

She answered it.

"Hello?""

Her expression changed almost immediately.

"Who is this?""

A pause.

Then she looked at Nick.

The color drained from her face.

"No," she whispered.

"You can't have her.""

Nick stepped toward her.

"Helen, what's wrong?""

She listened for several more seconds.

Then she slowly lowered the phone.

"That was Patricia.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did she say?""

Helen looked at us with terrified eyes.

"She knows Grace is alive.""

Nick's jaw clenched.

"How?""

"She said she's already contacted the hospital where Grace works.""

I felt the room spin.

"Why would she do that?""

Helen's voice broke.

"Because she intends to expose Grace's identity before Grace learns the truth herself.""

Nick pulled out his phone.

"We need to find her now.""

But Helen shook her head.

"There's something else Patricia said.""

She looked at me.

"She told me that if Grace discovers who her biological father really is, she'll never forgive the man who abandoned her.""

Nick went still.

"Daniel didn't abandon her.""

Helen's lips trembled.

"No," she whispered.

"But Patricia has spent twenty-eight years making sure Grace believes that he did.""

And then she revealed the detail that changed everything.

"Grace's adoptive parents never told her that Daniel was her father.""

She swallowed.

"Because the birth certificate they received named someone else.""

Nick stared at her.

"Who?""

May you like

Helen closed her eyes.

"Samuel Carter.""
