Thinking

Chapter 9: The Family I Thought I Knew

The phone slipped from my hand.

It hit the concrete floor with a sharp crack.

But I barely heard it.

Everything else had disappeared.

The warehouse.

The cold air.

The people standing around me.

All I could hear was my father’s voice repeating the same sentence.

*“Ethan is not my son.””*

I looked at Ethan.

He looked like someone had taken the air from his lungs.

For the first time since I met him, he didn’t have an answer.

No explanation.

No defense.

Just silence.

And somehow, that hurt more.

“Say something.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

Ethan stared at me.

“Naomi…”

“Say something.””

He opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

That was enough.

My heart sank.

Because silence could be louder than any confession.

I stepped backward.

“No.””

Ethan moved toward me.

“Wait.””

I raised my hand.

“Don’t.””

The pain on his face was real.

I could see that.

But I didn’t know what was real anymore.

Everything I had believed about my family had collapsed one piece at a time.

My father abandoned me.

Then he didn’t.

My brother was dead.

Then he wasn’t.

My brother was my protector.

Then maybe he wasn’t my brother.

My mother was my hero.

Then maybe she was a liar.

I looked at all of them.

“How many more secrets are there?””

Nobody answered.

I laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“Of course.””

I looked at Adrian.

“You knew about Ethan?””

“No.””

“Did you know my father was alive?””

His face changed.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Adrian.””

He closed his eyes.

“I suspected.””

My chest tightened.

“You suspected?””

“I didn’t know.””

“But you didn’t tell me.””

“I was trying to find proof.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone is always trying to protect me.””

My voice rose.

“But nobody is ever trying to trust me.””

The words stayed in the room.

Because they were true.

My father called again.

The screen lit up.

Nobody moved.

I stared at the name.

*Unknown Caller.*

A part of me wanted to answer.

Another part wanted to throw the phone away.

Because what kind of daughter was afraid to hear her father’s voice?

What kind of world had I entered where the truth felt more dangerous than a lie?

I answered.

“Why?””

Silence.

Then his voice.

“Naomi.””

I closed my eyes.

Hearing him hurt.

Not because I hated him.

Because I missed someone I never really knew.

“Why didn’t you come home?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

A long silence followed.

Then:

“Because I couldn’t.””

“You could have tried.””

“I did.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You left me.””

“No.””

The desperation in his voice surprised me.

“I never left you.””

“Then why?””

“Because someone was watching every person I loved.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Was it him?””

Another silence.

Too long.

“Naomi…”

“Was Ethan the reason?””

My father exhaled.

“No.””

I froze.

“No?””

“No. Ethan was trying to help me.””

I looked at Ethan.

He looked confused.

My father continued.

“But he doesn’t know everything.””

“Then tell me.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Tell me the truth.””

My father’s voice became quiet.

“Ethan is not my biological son.””

The words still hurt.

Even hearing them twice.

“But he is your brother.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He is the person who protected you when nobody else could.””

I looked at Ethan.

He looked down.

My father continued.

“His mother was someone I loved before I met Amelia.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

A pause.

“Victoria Hale’s sister.””

The warehouse became silent.

I looked at Evelyn.

She turned pale.

“No.””

The word came from her mouth.

My father’s voice continued.

“Ethan was born into the Hale family.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“His mother died when he was young. Amelia raised him as her own.””

I looked at Ethan.

He looked away.

“My mother…”

His voice cracked.

“I never knew.””

My father continued.

“Charles Hale wanted Ethan because of his connection to the family.””

“Why?””

“Because Ethan had access.””

I frowned.

“Access to what?””

“The Hale inheritance.””

Everything went quiet.

My father said,

“Charles built his empire on secrets. Ethan was the one person who could expose him legally.””

I looked at Ethan.

“So he really was helping you.””

“Yes.””

My anger began changing into confusion.

“Then why did you say not to trust him?””

My father went silent.

And that scared me.

“Dad?””

Finally, he answered.

“Because someone has been using Ethan’s identity.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“There is another person.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

My father heard him.

“Adrian?””

“Yes.””

A pause.

Then my father said something strange.

“You found her.””

Adrian looked down.

“Yes.””

“Then you know.””

“Know what?””

My father’s voice became heavy.

“That the person who destroyed both our families…”

Another pause.

“…was never Victoria.””

The same words again.

But this time, they felt different.

“Who?””

My father didn’t answer.

Then the call ended.

Nobody spoke for a long time.

Finally, Evelyn whispered,

“There was one person Charles Hale trusted more than anyone.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

Her face showed fear.

Not for herself.

For me.

“His wife.””

I frowned.

“Victoria’s mother?””

Evelyn nodded.

“But she died years ago.””

“Yes.””

“So?””

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

“Adrian knows.””

Everyone looked at him.

He went still.

“I don’t.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“You do.””

“No.””

She reached into her purse.

She pulled out a photograph.

A photograph of a woman.

Older.

Elegant.

Standing beside Charles Hale.

I recognized her immediately.

Because I had seen her before.

In old newspaper articles.

In family photographs.

In the background of documents.

Adrian stared at the picture.

Then whispered,

“No.””

Evelyn’s voice was quiet.

“Her name was Eleanor Hale.””

Adrian looked sick.

“That’s impossible.””

“Why?””

“Because she died before my father.””

Evelyn nodded.

“That’s what everyone believed.””

My heart raced.

“What does she have to do with this?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“Everything.””

She placed another document on the table.

A birth record.

A name.

A date.

A connection.

I read it.

Then read it again.

Because I couldn’t understand.

The person on the paper was not Ethan.

Not Victoria.

Not Charles.

It was someone else.

Someone who had been standing beside us this entire time.

I looked slowly toward Adrian.

The color had drained from his face.

Because he knew before I did.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

I picked up the paper.

And my hands started shaking.

The document showed a hidden adoption record.

A secret connection between two families.

And one name written at the bottom.

*Adrian Cross.*

I looked at him.

“No.””

He stared at the document.

“I didn’t know.””

Evelyn whispered,

“That’s why Charles Hale never feared losing everything.””

I looked between them.

“Why?””

She took a breath.

“Because the person who inherited his secrets…”

A pause.

“Was the person who inherited his blood.””

The warehouse went silent.

Adrian stepped back.

“My father wasn’t my father.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

I looked at Adrian.

The powerful man who had helped uncover my family’s secrets.

The man who seemed to have all the answers.

Suddenly looked just as lost as I was.

Then Ethan’s phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His face changed instantly.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

His voice was barely audible.

“It’s Victoria.””

My heart stopped.

“Answer it.””

He did.

The call connected.

Nobody spoke.

Then Victoria’s voice came through.

Calm.

Controlled.

Almost gentle.

“I know you found the files.””

Ethan said nothing.

Victoria continued.

“But you still don’t understand.””

I stepped closer.

“Victoria.””

Silence.

Then her voice changed.

“Naomi.””

Hearing my name from her made my skin crawl.

“You’ve spent your whole life looking for the person who destroyed your family.””

A pause.

“And now you’re standing beside him.””

I looked around the room.

At Adrian.

At Ethan.

At the people who had carried pieces of the truth.

Then Victoria said the words that changed everything.

“Your father disappeared because he discovered the real reason Charles Hale wanted Ethan and Adrian protected.””

My heart raced.

“What reason?””

Victoria’s answer was almost a whisper.

“Because they were never his biggest secret.””

A pause.

Then:

“You were.””

The call ended.

And for the first time all night…

May you like

I realized the truth might not have been hidden from me because someone wanted to protect me.

It might have been hidden because the truth was about me.
