Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
I didn’t open the envelope immediately.
That surprised everyone.
Especially Vincent.
Because all night, every person had expected me to chase answers.
But I had spent my entire life learning one thing.
Sometimes the truth hurt more than the lie.
The apartment was quiet.
Too quiet.
Sophie sat at the kitchen table, watching us.
She was eighteen.
But in that moment, she looked younger.
Like she was waiting for someone older to explain why her world had suddenly become unstable.
“Emma,” she said softly.
I looked at her.
“Are you okay?””
I forced a smile.
“I’m fine.””
She immediately shook her head.
“No, you’re not.””
That was Sophie.
She always saw through me.
Vincent stood near the window.
He looked uncomfortable.
Not because he was in my apartment.
Because he knew something I didn’t.
And I hated that.
I picked up the envelope.
“Tell me what’s inside.””
Vincent didn’t answer.
That was my answer.
My stomach tightened.
“You know.””
“Yes.””
“What is it?””
He looked at the envelope.
“Documents.””
“What kind?””
“Financial records.””
I stared.
“From twenty-five years ago?””
“Yes.””
I laughed quietly.
“This is unbelievable.””
“Emma.””
“No.””
I stood.
“You don’t get to say my name like that and expect me to calm down.””
The room went silent.
“I spent my entire life thinking my father was just unlucky.””
My voice shook.
“I thought we struggled because life was difficult.””
I looked at Vincent.
“But now I find out there was this entire world behind us?””
“Emma—”
“No.””
I pointed at the envelope.
“My father knew you. You knew him. Victoria knows something. Everyone knows something except me.””
Vincent didn’t defend himself.
That made me even angrier.
“Why?””
His voice was quiet.
“Because your father wanted you safe.””
I looked at him.
“Safe from what?””
He didn’t answer.
“Safe from what?””
Finally, he said:
“From people like Victoria.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside were copies of old documents.
Contracts.
Bank transfers.
Names.
One name appeared again and again.
Langford.
My hands went still.
“Victoria’s family?””
Vincent nodded.
“What does she have to do with this?””
“She inherited more than money.””
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Vincent walked closer.
“Her father was involved in the fraud my father discovered.””
The room became silent.
“So Victoria knows about my father because…”
“Because she knows what your father did.””
I frowned.
“What did he do?””
Vincent hesitated.
That hesitation terrified me.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I need the truth.””
He looked at me.
“Your father didn’t just expose the people stealing from my family.””
“Then what?””
“He helped me take control of the company.””
I stared.
“You became Vincent Moretti because of my father?””
“Partly.””
I looked back at the documents.
My father.
The man who fixed broken chairs.
The man who made jokes when money was tight.
The man who apologized to me when he couldn’t afford a birthday gift.
He had changed the future of one of the most powerful men in America.
And he never told me.
My phone rang.
Again.
This time, it was the hospital.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
“Emma Carter?””
“Yes.””
“This is Dr. Hayes.””
My heart dropped.
“What happened?””
“Your father woke up.””
I exhaled.
Relief.
Then the doctor continued.
“But he’s asking for Vincent Moretti.””
I looked up.
Vincent heard.
His expression changed.
“Me?””
I nodded.
The hospital room was dim when we arrived.
My father looked weaker than before.
But when he saw Vincent, something changed.
A small smile appeared.
“You finally told her.””
Vincent stood beside the bed.
“Yes.””
My father closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry, Emma.””
Those words hurt more than anger would have.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
He looked at me.
“Because I wanted you to hate me for being ordinary.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He smiled sadly.
“I wanted you to believe I was just your dad.””
I sat beside him.
“Dad…”
He reached for my hand.
“I made mistakes.””
“What mistakes?””
He looked at Vincent.
Then back at me.
“The kind that follow you.””
The heart monitor beeped faster.
The doctor stepped closer.
“Mr. Carter, you need to rest.””
But my father held on.
“No.””
His eyes stayed on me.
“You need to know.””
I felt tears forming.
“Know what?””
He swallowed.
“Victoria didn’t come to your apartment because she wanted revenge.””
I froze.
“Then why?””
My father looked terrified.
“Because she knows where the original evidence is.””
Vincent stepped forward.
“What evidence?””
My father’s eyes moved toward him.
“The evidence that can destroy the Langford family.””
Nobody spoke.
Then my father whispered:
“And she knows Emma has it.””
I felt the room tilt.
“What?””
My father squeezed my hand.
“Twenty-five years ago, I hid something.””
“What?””
He looked at Vincent.
Then at me.
“A recording.””
My breath caught.
“A recording of what?””
My father closed his eyes.
“A conversation between Victoria’s father…”
He opened them again.
“…and the man who ordered him to destroy Vincent Moretti.””
Vincent went completely still.
“Who?””
My father looked at him.
And whispered a name.
A name I had never heard before.
A name that made Vincent’s face lose all color.
May you like
Because whoever that person was…
was someone Vincent believed had been gone forever.
