Chapter 8: The Mother Behind the Locked Door
The address arrived at 2:13 a.m.
An abandoned hotel on the outskirts of the city.
No street number.
No name.
Just a set of coordinates and a photograph of a rusted iron gate.
Alexander insisted on calling Detective Walsh.
The detective answered after the third ring.
"Reed? It's nearly three in the morning.""
"We have a location.""
"Of what?""
"My biological mother.""
There was silence.
Then Walsh said:
"Do not go there.""
Alexander looked at me.
"Why?""
"Because we just received information that Thomas Reed has been moved to a secure medical facility. Someone accessed his hospital room records using credentials belonging to a Sterling employee.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Vanessa?""
"Possibly. But she's in custody.""
Alexander frowned.
"Then who?""
Walsh lowered his voice.
"Richard Sterling.""
I looked at the photograph on my phone.
My mother was waiting somewhere.
"Detective, we need to find Margaret.""
"Give me the address.""
Alexander hesitated.
Then he read out the coordinates.
Walsh went quiet.
"That's an old property belonging to Reed Holdings.""
"Can you send officers?""
"Yes. But I want you to stay where you are.""
The call ended.
Alexander grabbed his jacket.
"Let's go.""
The abandoned hotel stood behind a row of overgrown trees.
Its windows were dark, and a broken sign hung above the entrance.
The building had once been luxurious.
Now its marble steps were cracked, and weeds grew through the pavement.
We parked several hundred feet away.
Alexander checked the street.
"No lights.""
I held the bracelet tightly.
"She's inside.""
"How do you know?""
I pointed toward the second-floor window.
A small yellow light flickered behind the curtains.
Then disappeared.
Alexander took my hand.
"Stay behind me.""
We entered through a side door.
The lobby smelled of damp wood and cigarette smoke.
A staircase led to the upper floor.
At the end of the corridor, one door was slightly open.
I stopped.
There was a photograph taped to it.
My mother.
The same photograph from the message.
Beneath it was a handwritten sentence.
She waited seventeen years for you.
My throat tightened.
I pushed the door open.
"Mom?""
A woman sat beside a window.
Her back was turned.
She wore a gray sweater and held a small photograph in her hands.
"Mom?""
The woman slowly turned.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Eleanor.""
I ran toward her.
She stood, and I threw my arms around her.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
She smelled like lavender soap.
The same soap she had used when I was a child.
I buried my face against her shoulder.
"You're alive.""
She held me tightly.
"I'm sorry.""
I began crying.
"Why did you leave me?""
She closed her eyes.
"I thought I was protecting you.""
"You let me bury you!""
"I know.""
"You let me spend two years visiting a grave that wasn't yours!""
She started crying too.
"I know, darling.""
I stepped away.
"Then explain.""
Margaret looked toward Alexander.
He stood near the door, watching us.
She slowly approached him.
"Alexander.""
He didn't move.
"Do you know who I am?"" she asked.
He nodded.
"My biological mother.""
She reached for his hand.
He pulled it back.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Margaret lowered her head.
"Because Thomas threatened to take you away.""
"He was my father.""
"He was also a dangerous man.""
Alexander laughed bitterly.
"You let me grow up believing you were dead.""
"I know.""
"You let me believe another woman gave birth to me.""
Margaret began to cry.
"I had no choice.""
He shook his head.
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
I stepped between them.
"Mom, what is happening? Why did Vanessa say you chose Alexander over me?""
Margaret looked at me.
Her expression became unbearably sad.
"Because I did.""
The words hit me harder than I expected.
"What?""
She sat down.
"After you were born, Thomas discovered that Alexander was his son. He wanted to take him from me. He threatened Daniel and said he would destroy our family if I refused.""
I sat opposite her.
"Why didn't you leave?""
"Because Daniel believed we could fix everything. He thought Thomas would eventually stop.""
She looked toward the window.
"Then the construction accident happened.""
Her hands trembled.
"Three workers died. Richard needed someone to blame. Thomas needed to protect his ownership of the company. And Daniel had discovered the truth about Alexander.""
She swallowed.
"They used my signature to approve the safety changes. I had signed a temporary authorization without knowing what it contained.""
I leaned forward.
"Did you know what happened afterward?""
"Yes.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I discovered it two days later. I went to Richard and begged him to correct the records.""
"What did he say?""
"He offered me money.""
I felt sick.
"How much?""
"Five hundred thousand dollars.""
The bank receipt.
I stared at her.
"You took it.""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because he threatened to expose Alexander's birth and have him taken away from me. He said he would also make sure you and Daniel were left with nothing.""
I stood.
"So you accepted the money while Dad went to prison?""
Margaret shook her head.
"I used it to hire lawyers. I tried to save him.""
"But you didn't.""
"No.""
Her voice broke.
"I failed him.""
Silence filled the room.
Then Alexander spoke.
"Where is the original report?""
Margaret looked at the bracelet in my hand.
"Inside the clasp.""
I examined it.
The tiny metal section had a narrow seam I hadn't noticed before.
Margaret took it and pressed a hidden button.
A small compartment opened.
Inside was a folded piece of paper, no larger than a postage stamp.
She carefully removed it.
"This is the original inspection authorization.""
I stared at it.
The paper was yellowed.
But the writing remained clear.
At the bottom were three signatures.
Richard Sterling.
Thomas Reed.
And Margaret Hayes.
I looked at my mother.
"Why did you keep this?""
"Because it wasn't the only copy.""
"What do you mean?""
She reached into her sweater and removed a small flash drive.
"This contains the complete investigation. The financial transfers. The original safety reports. The names of the officials who accepted money.""
Alexander took it.
"Why didn't you give it to the police?""
"Because the police were paid.""
I stared at her.
"Who paid them?""
"Richard. Thomas. And someone inside the prison.""
I thought of my father's death.
"Did they kill Dad?""
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
"Yes.""
I covered my mouth.
"Who?""
She looked directly at Alexander.
"Thomas arranged the attack. Richard approved it. But the person who delivered the final order was someone neither of them expected to betray them.""
Alexander frowned.
"Who?""
Margaret opened her mouth.
Before she could answer, the hotel lights went out.
A loud crash came from the lobby.
Alexander pulled me away from the window.
"Down!""
A bullet shattered the glass.
Margaret screamed.
We dropped behind the sofa.
Footsteps thundered through the hallway.
Someone kicked the door open.
A flashlight beam swept across the room.
"Margaret Hayes!""
A man's voice.
"Come out!""
Alexander whispered.
"Stay here.""
I grabbed his arm.
"No.""
He looked at me.
"Trust me.""
He crawled toward the opposite side of the room.
The flashlight moved closer.
Then another voice spoke.
"Search the bedroom.""
I recognized it immediately.
Richard Sterling.
My mother covered her mouth.
I felt my entire body go cold.
Richard stepped into the room.
He was holding a pistol.
His expensive suit was covered in rain.
He looked at my mother.
"Margaret.""
She stood slowly.
"Richard.""
He sighed.
"After all these years, you still don't know when to stop.""
"You killed Daniel.""
Richard looked irritated.
"Daniel made his own choices.""
"He was your friend.""
"He became a liability.""
I stepped out from behind the sofa.
"You're a murderer.""
Richard turned.
His eyes narrowed.
"Eleanor.""
He smiled.
"Just like your father. Always asking questions.""
Alexander appeared behind him and struck his wrist.
The gun fell.
Richard spun around.
The two men struggled.
I grabbed the weapon and kicked it beneath the sofa.
Richard punched Alexander in the face.
Alexander fell against the wall.
"Alex!""
Richard turned toward me.
"Give me the drive.""
I held it behind my back.
"No.""
He grabbed my arm.
"Do you understand what happens if that information reaches the authorities?""
"Yes.""
"Your mother goes to prison. Alexander loses everything. And you become the daughter of a convicted criminal all over again.""
I stared at him.
"My father was innocent.""
Richard leaned closer.
"Your father was a fool.""
I slapped him.
Hard.
His head turned.
For one brief moment, he looked genuinely shocked.
Then he raised his hand.
A voice came from the doorway.
"Don't you dare touch her.""
Vanessa stood there.
Her hands were cuffed.
A police officer was behind her.
Richard froze.
"Vanessa?""
She looked at him.
"I heard everything.""
Richard's face hardened.
"You should have stayed in your cell.""
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"You should have stayed in prison.""
The officer stepped forward.
"Richard Sterling, you're under arrest.""
Richard laughed.
Then he looked at me.
"You think this is over?""
He straightened his jacket.
"You have no idea who signed the final order.""
Detective Walsh entered behind the officers.
"We're about to find out.""
He held up a document.
"Because we just recovered the prison's original medical records.""
Richard's smile disappeared.
Walsh looked at me.
"Miss Hayes, there's something you need to see.""
He placed the document on the table.
It was dated the day my father died.
At the bottom was a handwritten instruction.
*TRANSFER DANIEL HAYES TO CELL BLOCK C. NO MEDICAL SUPERVISION REQUIRED.*
The authorization carried one signature.
Not Richard's.
Not Thomas's.
Not Vanessa's.
It belonged to the man who had signed my father's original prison admission.
And I recognized the name.
*ALEXANDER REED.*
I looked at my brother.
May you like
He was staring at the paper.
His face had gone completely white.
