Chapter 7: The Truth Zuri Was Never Supposed to Hear

The first thing I did was try the hidden door.

Locked.

I pulled harder.

Nothing.

The second thing I did was call Zuri.

No signal.

My phone showed one word.

*Searching.*

The third thing I did was scream.

“Darius!””

My voice echoed through the small room.

No answer.

Only the faint sound of the ventilation system above us.

Tasha stood frozen beside the desk.

“He planned this.””

I looked at her.

“You knew he was capable of this?””

Her face twisted.

“No.””

A bitter laugh escaped her.

“I knew he was a liar. I knew he manipulated people. But this…”

She looked around the room.

“This is something else.””

I walked toward the speakers.

“Where is my daughter?””

Darius’s voice returned almost immediately.

“Emma.””

The calmness in his voice made my stomach turn.

“You always make things more dramatic than they need to be.””

I stared at the ceiling.

“Where is Zuri?””

“She’s safe.””

“Let me talk to her.””

A pause.

“No.””

My hands curled into fists.

“You don’t get to do this.””

“Actually, I do.””

His confidence was back.

The same confidence he had when he entered the courtroom.

The same confidence he had when he thought he had already won.

“You’re still making the same mistake, Emma.””

“What mistake?””

“You think this is about hurting you.””

I looked at the hidden files.

The cameras.

The documents.

The years of planning.

“Then what is it about?””

Silence.

Then:

“Survival.””

I almost laughed.

“Your survival?””

“You have no idea what’s coming.””

“You’re right.””

I stepped closer to the speaker.

“I don’t know what you’re afraid of.””

For the first time, he didn’t respond immediately.

That hesitation told me everything.

Darius was afraid.

Not of losing the divorce.

Not of losing money.

Of something else.

“You always were too curious,” he finally said.

“And you always underestimated me.””

A small sound came from the speaker.

A sigh.

Like he was disappointed.

“Emma, I gave you a chance.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I gave you opportunities to walk away.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You filed for divorce.””

“No.””

His voice became quieter.

“I protected you.””

Tasha looked at me.

We both knew.

This was how Darius worked.

He didn’t just lie.

He created a world where his lies sounded like kindness.

“You’re insane.””

“No.””

His voice hardened.

“I’m the only one who understands what happens if the truth comes out.””

“The truth about what?””

No answer.

I looked at Tasha.

She whispered:

“The computer.””

I nodded.

We moved toward the desk.

The screen was still black.

The remote access message remained.

I pressed the power button.

Nothing.

Tasha searched the cables.

“He cut the power.””

“Then how is the speaker working?””

She looked upward.

“Backup system.””

Of course.

Everything planned.

Everything controlled.

I looked around the room.

A hidden room.

Hidden cameras.

Hidden files.

A backup power source.

Darius had spent years preparing for someone to discover him.

The question was why.

Tasha pulled open a drawer.

Inside were several USB drives.

Each one labeled with dates.

“Emma.””

Her voice changed.

I walked over.

“What?””

She held up one drive.

The label read:

*L.M. FINAL*

Lauren Mitchell.

My heart started racing.

“Play it.””

Tasha hesitated.

“If Darius knows we found this—”

“He already knows.””

I took the drive.

“We need answers.””

She inserted it into the computer.

The screen flickered.

A video appeared.

At first, there was only a dark room.

Then Lauren appeared.

She looked younger.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

She was sitting in front of a camera.

Not speaking.

Just staring.

Then she pressed record.

“If you’re watching this, Darius knows I’m gone.””

I felt a chill.

Tasha covered her mouth.

Lauren continued.

“My name is Lauren Mitchell. I was a partner at Carter Financial Solutions before Darius took control.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“I need whoever finds this to understand something.””

A pause.

“Darius doesn’t destroy people because they hurt him.””

Her voice shook.

“He destroys people because they know too much.””

I glanced at Tasha.

Lauren continued.

“When I discovered the missing funds, I thought I could expose him.””

She gave a sad smile.

“I thought evidence was enough.””

The room felt smaller.

“I was wrong.””

She leaned closer.

“Darius doesn’t fight evidence.””

A pause.

“He fights the person holding it.””

My stomach tightened.

Lauren looked down.

“He created a file on me before I even realized I was his enemy.””

The same thing.

The same pattern.

“Everything he collected was designed to make people doubt me.””

She swallowed.

“He recorded private conversations. He took moments when I was angry or scared. He removed the context.””

I looked at the folders.

The videos.

The same strategy.

“He did it because he knew something important.””

Lauren’s eyes filled with tears.

“People believe a broken person before they believe an accusation.””

The video paused.

Then she said:

“Emma Carter.””

My entire body froze.

She knew my name.

“If you are watching this, he has already started using the same plan against you.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Tasha looked at me.

Lauren continued.

“He will tell people you are emotional.””

A pause.

“He will tell people you are unstable.””

Another pause.

“He will make everyone question your memory.””

My eyes burned.

Because she was describing my divorce.

My courtroom.

My life.

“But Emma…”

Lauren leaned toward the camera.

“There is something you need to know about Zuri.””

The room went silent.

I moved closer.

“What?””

The video continued.

“Darius didn’t choose you because he loved you.””

My heart stopped.

“He chose you because of your profession.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Tasha looked confused too.

Lauren continued.

“Before you left your accounting firm, you worked on a case.””

I felt a memory surface.

A case from ten years ago.

Before marriage.

Before Zuri.

A corporate investigation.

One I never talked about.

“Darius knew about your skills.””

Lauren’s voice became quieter.

“He knew you could find things other people couldn’t.””

My hands went cold.

“He didn’t marry you by accident.””

The words hit harder than anything.

No.

I refused to believe it.

No.

“He married you because he needed access.””

The screen flickered.

The video glitched.

Then Lauren’s final words appeared.

“Ask yourself why he waited until Zuri was old enough to remember before he started this.””

The video ended.

I stood there unable to move.

Tasha whispered:

“Emma…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

But my mind was already racing.

The timeline.

The marriage.

The years.

The planning.

“Why Zuri?””

I looked at Tasha.

“Why now?””

She didn’t answer.

Because neither of us knew.

Then the computer screen turned on by itself.

A new file appeared.

No label.

No date.

Just one word.

*EMMA.*

I clicked it.

Inside was a single document.

A birth certificate.

Not Zuri’s.

Mine.

I stared at it.

Then I saw the attached note.

My hands started shaking.

Because written at the top were words I never expected to see.

*The Carter family secret began before Emma was born.*

The room went silent.

And for the first time, I realized something terrifying.

Darius hadn’t been studying my life.

He had been studying my history.

Before he ever met me.

Before our wedding.

Before Zuri.

Before everything.

A message appeared on the screen.

From Darius.

*Now you understand why I couldn’t let you leave.*

May you like

Then another line appeared.

*Because if you find out who you really are, everyone loses.*
