Chapter 5: The Trust
I didn't sleep.
At 5:12 in the morning, I was sitting on my living-room floor with Evelyn's letter spread around me.
I had read it so many times that the words were beginning to blur.
My entire childhood had been built on a lie.
But one question kept coming back.
Why had Patricia needed my money?
The answer was sitting in front of me.
The trust.
I called the lawyer listed in Evelyn's letter.
A receptionist answered.
“Harper & Cole.””
“I need to speak with Daniel Cole.””
“Mr. Cole doesn't take unscheduled calls.””
“My name is Claire Morgan.””
There was silence.
Then the receptionist said, “Please hold.””
My heart started pounding.
Thirty seconds later, a man's voice came through.
“Claire?””
“Yes.””
“Where did you get my name?””
“My biological mother.””
Another silence.
“Evelyn?””
“Yes.””
His voice softened.
“I was wondering when you'd call.””
I sat up.
“You knew about me?””
“I've known about you for eleven years.””
“Why didn't you contact me?””
“Because Evelyn specifically asked me not to interfere unless you found the documents yourself.””
“What documents?””
“The trust documents.””
“Tell me about the trust.””
“Your grandmother, Margaret Harper, created it before her death. You are the sole beneficiary.””
“How much?””
He hesitated.
“Approximately 1.8 million dollars, depending on investment performance.””
I stopped breathing.
“I'm sorry?””
“It's currently worth a little over $1.8 million.””
I looked around my small apartment.
The secondhand sofa.
The old kitchen table.
The laptop I'd used for work for seven years.
I whispered, “Does Patricia know?””
“She knew about the trust.””
“How?””
“She was present when your grandmother changed the beneficiary designation.””
My stomach twisted.
“Changed it from whom?””
“From Patricia.””
I understood.
“She was supposed to get the money?””
“Originally.””
“What happened?””
“Your grandmother discovered Patricia had been diverting money from the family business.””
I closed my eyes.
“So she removed her.””
“Yes.””
“And made me the beneficiary?””
“Yes.””
“Then Patricia took me.””
“I don't know the full circumstances.””
“But Evelyn does.””
“She did.””
“She's dead.””
“I know.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was bound by confidentiality, and Evelyn was terrified Patricia would hurt you.””
My hands tightened around the phone.
“She already hurt me.””
Daniel sighed.
“I know.””
“Can I access the trust now?””
“Not fully.””
“Why?””
“Your grandmother created staggered distributions. You received small payments at certain ages without knowing their source.””
My eyes widened.
“Wait.””
I remembered them.
At twenty-one, I had received a mysterious $10,000 distribution.
At twenty-five, another $15,000.
At thirty, $25,000.
Mom had told me each time it was “a family gift.””
She had insisted I use it responsibly.
“You're telling me those weren't from my parents?””
“No.””
“Those were trust distributions?””
“Yes.””
My hands started shaking.
“Did Patricia have access?””
“Not legally.””
“But she knew about them.””
“She knew enough.””
I stood and walked toward the kitchen.
“Daniel, someone tried to transfer $13,000 from my bank account to Patricia three days ago.””
His voice immediately changed.
“Did you authorize it?””
“No.””
“Then you need to contact your bank's fraud department and file a report.””
“I already did.””
“Good.””
“There was something else.””
“What?””
“The $13,000 was the exact remaining balance on a family vacation.””
“Where?””
“Aspen.””
He was silent.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“Claire, don't go to Aspen.””
“Why?””
“Because I don't think the vacation was ever about the vacation.””
I gripped the counter.
“What do you mean?””
“Your mother has been asking questions about your trust.””
“When?””
“For months.””
My stomach dropped.
“How long has she known I'm the beneficiary?””
“Since your grandmother died.””
That was thirty-four years ago.
“Then why now?””
“Because of your birthday.””
I closed my eyes.
“My thirty-fifth.””
“Yes.””
“What happens when I turn thirty-five?””
“The remaining restrictions disappear.””
“So I get full control.””
“Correct.””
“And Patricia can't touch it.””
“Not without your authorization.””
I laughed once.
“That's why she tried to add herself as an external account.””
“Exactly.””
I stared at the letter.
Then I noticed something I'd missed.
A photocopy was attached to the back.
A legal document.
At the top:
*Estate of Margaret Harper.*
Below it was a beneficiary designation.
*Primary Beneficiary: Claire Evelyn Harper.*
My middle name.
Evelyn.
I had never known why my parents gave me that name.
Mom always said it was a name Dad liked.
It was a lie.
Everything was a lie.
Daniel spoke again.
“Claire, there's one more thing.””
“What?””
“Your birth certificate may have been altered.””
I froze.
“What?””
“The original certificate lists your name as Claire Evelyn Harper.””
My heart stopped.
“Then why does mine say Claire Morgan?””
“That is what I want you to find out.””
I sat back down.
“Do you have the original?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
“In my office.””
“Can I see it?””
“You can.””
“When?””
“Today.””
I looked at the clock.
7:03 a.m.
“I'll be there when you open.””
“Claire?””
“Yes?””
“Bring identification.””
“Why?””
“Because I think you're going to need it.””
I drove straight to his office.
But before I reached the highway, my phone rang.
Mom.
I ignored her.
Then a text arrived.
*You spoke to Daniel Cole.*
I slammed on the brakes.
How did she know?
Another message appeared.
*I warned you not to investigate.*
Then:
*You think the trust makes you untouchable. It doesn't.*
I stared at the screen.
A third message came through.
*Ask Daniel what happened to the last person who tried to expose me.*
I didn't move.
Then the phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID wasn't Mom.
It was an unknown number.
I answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
“Claire, don't go to Daniel's office.””
“Who is this?””
“My name is Brittany.””
I frowned.
“My sister?””
“Yes.””
Her voice was trembling.
“Mom doesn't know I'm calling.””
“What happened?””
“I found something in her bedroom.””
“What?””
“Documents.””
“What kind?””
“I don't know. But your name is on all of them.””
My heart began pounding.
“Where are you?””
“I'm at Mom's house.””
“Leave.””
“I can't.””
“Brittany, get out.””
“I tried.””
There was a crash in the background.
Brittany gasped.
Then I heard Mom's voice.
“Who are you talking to?””
Brittany whispered:
“Claire…”
May you like
The call ended.
I immediately turned the car around.
