Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Died Protecting

The name hung between us.

Richard Mitchell.

My uncle.

My father’s brother.

The man who had stood beside me at graduations.

The man who brought gifts on Christmas.

The man who smiled in family photographs.

The man my father had spent years investigating.

I stared at Anna.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

Because some truths were too large to accept all at once.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Anna’s eyes filled with sadness.

“I wish it wasn’t.””

I looked down at the photograph in her hands.

The baby.

The child she called Emily.

Me.

“How?””

My voice shook.

“How could he take me?””

Anna stepped closer.

“I was young.””

She looked toward the small blue house behind her.

“I was twenty years old. I had just given birth. I was alone.””

My chest tightened.

“Where was my father?””

She looked down.

“Your biological father died before you were born.””

The words landed quietly.

Another piece of my history I never knew.

“I had no family nearby,” she continued.

“No money. No support.””

She swallowed.

“Richard knew that.””

I felt sick.

“How did he know you?””

Anna hesitated.

“He worked with my father.””

The connection felt like a thread pulling tighter.

“Richard told me he could help.””

Her voice changed.

“He said he knew a family who would give my baby a better life.””

I closed my eyes.

I already knew where this was going.

“He told me it would be temporary.””

My eyes opened.

“Temporary?””

Anna nodded.

“He said he would arrange everything. That I could get stable, then come back for my daughter.””

The pain in her face was unbearable.

“But when I returned…”

She stopped.

I waited.

“When I returned, the records were gone.””

My heart pounded.

“What records?””

“The hospital records. The adoption papers. Everything.””

The same pattern.

Missing documents.

Hidden truth.

A life rewritten.

“What did he tell you?””

Anna looked at the ground.

“He told me you had been adopted by another family.””

My throat tightened.

“And you believed him?””

“I was young,” she whispered.

“And I was grieving.””

She wiped her tears.

“I searched.””

The way she said it broke me.

Not casually.

Not like a story from the past.

Like something she had lived every day.

“I searched for years.””

I looked away.

Because I didn’t know how to feel.

Anger.

Sadness.

Confusion.

Everything existed at once.

“Why didn’t you find me?””

Anna looked at me.

“Because Richard made sure you disappeared.””

The words felt familiar.

Too familiar.

Someone always making sure I disappeared.

From letters.

From my father.

From my own history.

“How did Dad find out?””

Anna’s expression softened.

“James.””

She smiled sadly.

“Your father was the first person who ever listened to me.””

My heart hurt.

Of course he was.

Even after everything.

My father had been searching for the truth.

Not because he wanted to expose someone.

Because he wanted to protect me.

“He found me five years ago,” Anna continued.

“Five years?””

I did the math.

Five years before his death.

The same time he started keeping more records.

“He told me he suspected Richard had lied.””

She looked at the photograph.

“He wanted to bring you to me.””

My breath caught.

“He was going to tell me?””

Anna nodded.

“He said you deserved the truth.””

I looked down.

My father.

Always trying.

Always too late.

“What happened?””

Anna’s face fell.

“Richard found out.””

The wind moved through the trees.

“And?””

“He threatened James.””

My stomach tightened.

“With what?””

Anna looked at me.

“With you.””

I felt cold.

“He told James that if he exposed him, he would destroy your life.””

I shook my head.

“He already did.””

Anna nodded sadly.

“Yes.””

I looked back toward the road.

Everything made sense now.

The fake email.

The rumors.

The distance.

Richard didn’t just want me away from my father.

He wanted me away from anyone who could reveal the truth.

My phone rang.

I jumped.

It was Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Daniel?””

His voice was urgent.

“Sarah, where are you?””

“Kentucky.””

A pause.

“You found her.””

I looked at Anna.

“Yes.””

Another pause.

“Then you need to come back.””

Something in his voice made me uneasy.

“What happened?””

“We found something in your father’s safe.””

“What?””

“A recording.””

My heart stopped.

“A recording of what?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Your father and Richard.””

I looked at Anna.

“When?””

“Three weeks before your father died.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Play it.””

“Sarah—”

“Play it.””

A few seconds passed.

Then I heard my father’s voice.

Older.

Weaker.

But still him.

“Richard, I know what you did.””

I froze.

Then another voice.

My uncle.

“James, you need to let this go.””

My blood ran cold.

Dad continued.

“You stole my daughter’s identity.””

Silence.

Then Richard spoke.

“She was never yours.””

My heart broke.

I heard my father’s voice change.

Anger.

Something I rarely heard from him.

“Do not say that.””

Richard laughed softly.

“You and Evelyn wanted a family. I gave you one.””

The recording crackled.

Then my father said:

“You manipulated two desperate people. You altered records. You destroyed a mother’s life.””

Richard answered:

“And you benefited from it.””

I covered my mouth.

The pain was overwhelming.

My father knew.

He knew everything.

Daniel’s voice came through the phone.

“There’s more.””

I listened.

Richard spoke again.

“You should be grateful, James. Sarah had a good life.””

My father replied:

“She deserved the truth.””

Richard’s voice became colder.

“And if she learns it?””

A pause.

Then my father said:

“She will.””

Richard laughed.

“You don’t understand what will happen.””

The recording went silent for a moment.

Then Richard said:

“Tell her, and she loses everyone.””

I felt my stomach drop.

My father asked:

“What does that mean?””

Richard answered:

“It means Evelyn’s secret comes out too.””

I froze.

Evelyn’s secret.

Not the adoption.

Something else.

My father’s voice became quiet.

“What did you do?””

Richard didn’t answer.

The recording ended.

I stood completely still.

Anna looked at me.

“What happened?””

I couldn’t speak.

Because somehow, after everything, there was still another secret.

I called Daniel back.

“What did he mean?””

“I don’t know.””

“Find out.””

“Sarah—”

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“I’m done waiting for people to decide what I deserve to know.””

I ended the call.

Anna watched me.

“He was right about one thing.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

“Your father.””

She smiled sadly.

“He always believed the truth eventually finds its way home.””

I looked at the woman who had searched for me.

The mother I never knew.

The family I had lost.

The family I had gained.

Then my phone buzzed again.

A message.

From an unknown number.

My blood turned cold when I read it.

*You should have stayed away, Sarah.*

Another message appeared.

*Your father made the same mistake you are making now.*

Then a third.

*Ask Evelyn what happened the night you were born.*

I stared at the screen.

Anna saw my face.

“What is it?””

I looked up.

Because suddenly, I understood.

Richard hadn’t been trying to hide the past.

He was still trying to control the present.

“He knows I found you.””

Anna stepped back.

Fear crossed her face.

“How?””

I looked at the message again.

And then I saw the final text.

The one that made my heart stop.

May you like

*Come home if you want the truth.*

*But don’t expect your mother to survive telling it.*
