Chapter 6: The Deal They Made Before I Knew

The room changed the moment Marcus Hale spoke.

It was no longer a dinner party.

It was a courtroom without a judge.

Every person at the table was waiting for someone to confess.

Marcus stepped inside slowly.

He looked older than he did in the photograph.

Smaller.

Less powerful.

Maybe because he knew the truth was finally catching up with him.

“Rebecca,” he said.

I stared at him.

“You were at my mother’s funeral.””

“Yes.””

“You held her hand.””

“Yes.””

“You told me you would protect her wishes.””

His face tightened.

“I tried.””

I laughed once.

A cold, empty sound.

“You tried?””

I pointed toward the documents.

“You signed papers to steal from me.””

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“You made choices.””

David stepped between us.

“Rebecca, this is getting out of control.””

I turned toward him.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

“You lied about Arizona.””

“I made a mistake.””

“You had an affair.””

His jaw tightened.

“That’s personal.””

“And stealing my inheritance isn’t?””

He had no answer.

Marcus sat down.

His hands shook slightly.

That surprised me.

I expected arrogance.

Not fear.

“Your mother knew there were problems,” he said.

“Problems with you?””

“With the trust.””

I stared.

“Explain.””

Marcus looked at David.

Then Angela.

Then back at me.

“Evelyn discovered David had been asking questions.””

My stomach tightened.

“When?””

“Two years before she died.””

I looked at David.

“That’s impossible.””

David looked away.

Marcus continued.

“He wanted to understand how the trust worked.””

“That’s not illegal.””

“No.””

Marcus paused.

“But what he did afterward was.””

The room became silent.

“He contacted me privately.””

My fingers curled.

“Why?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Because he wanted to know if there was a way to become a controlling party over the trust.””

I stared at my husband.

“You wanted control?””

David finally snapped.

“I was your husband!””

The anger in his voice shocked everyone.

“You think I had no right to know about our future?””

“Our future?””

I stepped closer.

“My mother left that money to me.””

“Yes.””

“And you wanted it.””

He looked at me.

Not ashamed.

Frustrated.

Like I was being unreasonable.

“I built this life with you.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You built a life next to me.””

The difference mattered.

David looked away.

Marcus continued.

“After Evelyn rejected any changes, David became more aggressive.””

Angela whispered:

“Stop.””

Marcus ignored her.

“He began searching for another way.””

I looked at Angela.

“And you helped him.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because David told me you were going to leave him.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He said you were planning to divorce him after your mother’s trust was released.””

I stared.

“I never said that.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“But I believed him.””

I shook my head.

“You believed him over me?””

She didn’t answer.

Because there was no answer that would make sense.

Marcus pulled out another file.

“This is the part you don’t know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Your mother changed the trust shortly before she died.””

My heart stopped.

“What change?””

He opened the file.

“She added a protection clause.””

I read the document.

If Rebecca Collins is ever pressured, manipulated, or deceived regarding the trust, all authority remains solely with her and any attempt to alter ownership becomes invalid.

I looked up.

“She knew.””

Marcus nodded.

“She suspected someone close to you might try.””

The room was silent.

Then David laughed.

A strange, bitter laugh.

“You all think you’ve won.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

He stood.

“You think this is over because you found paperwork?””

Margaret stepped forward.

“Careful, David.””

But he was no longer trying to hide.

His mask had fallen.

“You don’t know everything.””

My heart sank.

“What else is there?””

David looked at Marcus.

The two men exchanged a glance.

And suddenly I understood.

There was still a secret between them.

Something worse.

Something they were both afraid I would discover.

Daniel’s phone rang.

Everyone jumped.

He answered quickly.

“Hello?””

His expression changed.

“Are you sure?””

He looked at me.

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

Daniel slowly lowered the phone.

“Rebecca…”

“What?””

His voice became quiet.

“The bank just confirmed someone attempted to empty the trust account this morning.””

The room froze.

I looked at David.

He didn’t deny it.

Because he didn’t have to.

Then Daniel added:

“But that’s not the strangest part.””

“What is?””

He looked at the documents on the table.

“The person who authorized the transfer wasn’t David.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then who was it?””

Daniel stared at Marcus Hale.

And said:

“It was someone using your mother’s original account credentials.””

Margaret whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

But Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

May you like

“It means someone had access to information only your mother should have known.””

And suddenly, every person in the room looked like a stranger.
