Chapter 7: The Woman Behind the Transfer
Daniel’s silence told me more than any explanation could.
Because for the first time since I discovered the townhouse, he wasn’t trying to control the story.
He wasn’t reaching for a carefully prepared excuse.
He wasn’t telling me I misunderstood.
He was afraid.
And the person he was afraid of was his own mother.
“Elizabeth Carter.””
I said her name slowly.
The woman who hugged me on my wedding day.
The woman who brought me soup when I was sick during my first year of marriage.
The woman who held Noah in her arms five weeks ago and cried while saying, “Our family is complete.””
Our family.
The phrase suddenly felt like a lie.
Daniel moved toward me.
“Sophie, listen to me.””
I held up my hand.
“No.””
His expression changed.
“You don’t understand.””
“That sentence again.””
“Sophie—”
“No.””
I looked at the document on my phone.
“Six years ago, your father died. You became CEO. You controlled my father’s company. You controlled my inheritance.””
I looked at him.
“And now I find out your mother signed a transfer agreement moving my family assets.””
Daniel didn’t speak.
“Tell me why.””
His jaw tightened.
“I don’t know everything.””
I stared at him.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“It’s the truth.””
“Then tell me what you do know.””
He looked at Victoria.
Then back at me.
“Not here.””
I almost smiled.
“Still trying to choose the location?””
“Sophie.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“For years, you chose what I knew. What I saw. What questions I was allowed to ask.””
My voice lowered.
“You don’t get to decide where the truth happens.””
Daniel looked away.
And that was when Victoria spoke.
“Elizabeth Carter wasn’t just involved in the transfer.””
Daniel immediately turned.
“Stop.””
Victoria ignored him.
“She was the person who created it.””
The room froze.
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
Victoria opened another file.
“Your father’s original agreement gave you ownership rights after his death. Daniel was supposed to act as temporary administrator.””
She placed a document on the table.
“But Elizabeth discovered something.””
“What?””
“That Daniel didn’t have complete control.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Because of me?””
Victoria nodded.
“Because of you.””
Daniel’s voice was sharp.
“Victoria.””
But she continued.
“Your father built protections into the agreement. Protections that prevented anyone from selling, transferring, or altering ownership without your approval.””
My stomach tightened.
“So how did they do it?””
Victoria looked at the document.
“They created approval documents.””
“Fake ones?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Like my signature.””
His face went pale.
I whispered:
“You weren’t just hiding my assets.””
“No.””
Victoria’s voice was quiet.
“They were trying to remove your control completely.””
The word they bothered me.
Not him.
Not Daniel.
They.
A partnership.
A plan.
“How long?””
Victoria looked at me.
“They started working on it before your father died.””
I felt dizzy.
Before.
Before the accident.
Before I lost him.
Before I married Daniel.
My father had been fighting something while I was completely unaware.
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Victoria looked sad.
“Because he was trying to keep you away from it.””
I laughed bitterly.
“He kept me away so well that I married the person involved.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
The truth was sitting right there.
Ugly.
Heavy.
Impossible to ignore.
I turned to Daniel.
“Did you love me when you married me?””
His face changed.
The question hit harder than anything else.
“Yes.””
The answer came immediately.
And somehow that made it worse.
“Then when did it change?””
“It didn’t.””
“Then why?””
He looked at me.
“Because I was weak.””
The honesty surprised me.
He sat down.
“My father spent my entire life telling me I wasn’t enough.””
I said nothing.
“He built everything around power. Control. Winning.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“When your father trusted me, I thought it was my chance to prove myself.””
“By stealing from him?””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“At first, no.””
I watched him carefully.
Because there it was.
The beginning.
The moment where people crossed lines.
Not all at once.
One step.
Then another.
“What happened?””
Daniel took a breath.
“After your father died, I found out about the trust.””
“The one for me.””
“Yes.””
“And you told your mother.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked ashamed.
“Because I needed advice.””
Victoria gave a quiet laugh.
“Advice.””
Daniel ignored her.
“I thought my mother would help me manage the transition.””
“But she didn’t.””
“No.””
“What did she do?””
Daniel looked at the document.
“She convinced me that if you took control immediately, Halston would collapse.””
I frowned.
“That makes no sense.””
“She said you weren’t prepared.””
My hands curled.
“So you decided for me.””
“I was trying to protect the company.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were trying to protect your position.””
Daniel didn’t deny it.
And that was the answer.
A knock interrupted us.
All three of us looked toward the door.
Nobody moved.
Then the door opened.
And Elizabeth Carter walked inside.
My mother-in-law.
Elegant.
Perfect.
Calm.
Exactly how I had always known her.
She carried a handbag in one hand.
A coat over her arm.
And she looked completely unsurprised to see Victoria.
Or the documents.
Or me.
Her eyes went directly to Noah.
Then to me.
“Sophie.””
Her voice was gentle.
Almost loving.
That almost made me angry.
“Elizabeth.””
She looked around.
“I see the truth finally came out.””
Daniel stood.
“Mom.””
She ignored him.
“Sophie, you should have been told sooner.””
I stared at her.
“You knew?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
Elizabeth sighed.
“I knew there were things Daniel needed to handle.””
Things.
That word.
Everyone used soft words for ugly actions.
“Did you know he forged my signature?””
Her expression shifted.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at her.
“Mom.””
She turned toward him.
“Don’t.””
One word.
And Daniel stopped.
I looked between them.
“You’re the one who taught him how to do this.””
Elizabeth’s eyes hardened.
“No.””
“Then what?””
“I taught him how to survive.””
I stared at her.
“By destroying me?””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“By protecting what your father left behind.””
I almost laughed.
“You mean protecting what you took.””
Elizabeth’s face became colder.
“You don’t understand the world you’re entering.””
“I didn’t enter anything.””
I pointed at Daniel.
“They dragged me into it.””
For the first time, Elizabeth looked angry.
Not guilty.
Angry.
“You think this is about money?””
“Isn’t it?””
“No.””
She looked at Noah.
“It’s about power.””
The honesty shocked me.
“Power?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“Your father made the mistake of believing power could be handed to someone who didn’t want it.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you were never supposed to inherit a company.””
“Then what was I supposed to inherit?””
Elizabeth smiled slightly.
And that smile terrified me.
“Everything.””
Nobody spoke.
Then she reached into her handbag.
She pulled out a folder.
And placed it on the table.
“This is the part Daniel was too afraid to tell you.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Mom, don’t.””
She looked at him.
“You already failed once.””
The words cut through the room.
Then she looked at me.
“Your father didn’t leave you Halston because he wanted you to run a company.””
She opened the folder.
“He left you something much bigger.””
I stared at the pages.
The first document was a list.
Companies.
Properties.
Accounts.
International holdings.
I looked at Elizabeth.
“What is this?””
She leaned closer.
“Your father’s real legacy.””
My eyes moved down the page.
Then stopped.
Because at the bottom was a company name I had never seen before.
A company worth billions.
And beside it was a note.
*Founder: Thomas Carter.*
My father.
I looked up.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me this existed?””
Elizabeth’s expression became unreadable.
“Because your father knew one thing.””
“What?””
She closed the folder.
“He knew that whoever controlled you…”
She looked at Daniel.
“…would eventually control everything.””
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
*Ask Elizabeth why your father’s final meeting was with Daniel.*
I looked at Daniel.
Then Elizabeth.
And for the first time, I realized something worse than betrayal.
Maybe Daniel wasn’t the person who started this.
Maybe he was only the person who inherited the secret.
I looked at my mother-in-law.
“Why did my father meet Daniel the night he died?””
Elizabeth’s face finally changed.
Just for a second.
But it was enough.
Because she knew.
May you like
And whatever happened that night…
Daniel wasn’t the only person who had been lying to me.
