Chapter 6: My Father’s Final Warning
My father’s voice filled the room.
And for a moment, everything else disappeared.
Not Daniel.
Not Victoria.
Not the secrets.
Only him.
Six years.
Six years since I had heard that voice outside of my memories.
Six years since I had heard him laugh while burning pancakes in the kitchen.
Six years since he called me “kiddo” even though I was almost thirty.
Six years since I hugged him goodbye.
And now he was speaking to me from a recording he had made before he died.
A recording Daniel had hidden.
A recording everyone had been afraid of.
“Sophie,” my father’s voice continued, “if you are hearing this, then something went wrong.””
My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.
Victoria stood near the doorway, holding the device.
Daniel sat frozen.
Not moving.
Not speaking.
Like a man waiting for a verdict.
My father continued.
“I need you to understand something first. The choices I made were not because I didn’t trust you.””
My eyes burned.
“I know you will wonder why I kept secrets from you. I know you will feel hurt. You deserve the truth.””
A tear escaped before I could stop it.
Not because I forgave him.
Because I missed him.
Because even after everything, hearing him felt like being home.
“I spent my life building things,” he said.
“Companies. Ideas. Relationships. But the most important thing I ever built was your future.””
Daniel looked down.
Victoria watched him carefully.
My father continued.
“Thomas Carter was my partner. Richard Carter was my business associate. But over time, I discovered that the Carter family had different ideas about ownership than I did.””
The room grew colder.
“I found financial transfers. Hidden accounts. Agreements made without my approval.””
I looked at Daniel.
His face was pale.
“But the person who surprised me most was Daniel.””
My breath caught.
Daniel closed his eyes.
My father’s voice remained calm.
“That may be the hardest part for you to hear, Sophie. Because Daniel loves you.””
The words hurt.
Because they were complicated.
Because I didn’t know what to do with them.
“He does,” my father continued.
“I believe that. But love and loyalty are not always the same thing.””
Daniel looked up.
For a brief second, his eyes met mine.
Then he looked away.
“Daniel made choices,” my father said.
“Some because he was pressured. Some because he was afraid. Some because he wanted power.””
My hands shook.
“Before I died, I discovered he had access to documents that should have been protected.””
Victoria glanced at Daniel.
My father continued.
“Documents connected to my ownership agreement with Halston.””
The room became completely still.
“I asked Daniel for the truth.””
A pause.
“And he lied.””
Daniel whispered, “I was trying to fix it.””
Nobody responded.
Not even Victoria.
Because the recording continued.
“I gave Daniel one final opportunity to make things right.””
My father’s voice became quieter.
“I told him that if he protected Sophie, I would forgive him.””
I looked at Daniel.
My husband looked like he was somewhere else.
Back in the past.
Back in the moment when he made whatever decision destroyed everything.
“But if he used Sophie’s trust against her,” my father said, “then I left instructions.””
My heart started pounding.
Instructions.
“Instructions that would activate only if Sophie discovered the truth.””
I looked at Victoria.
She nodded slightly.
Like she had been waiting for this exact moment.
My father continued.
“Sophie, you may not know this, but you are not simply my daughter.””
My breathing stopped.
“You are the legal successor to everything I built.””
The words echoed.
Everything.
“I placed ownership structures in your name because I wanted you protected. Not because I wanted you involved in business.””
I shook my head.
No.
This couldn’t be real.
I had spent my entire adult life believing I was ordinary.
A marketing manager.
A wife.
A mother.
Not someone connected to a corporate empire.
Not someone holding the key to a company everyone fought over.
My father’s voice softened.
“I knew you would never chase power. That was why I trusted you with it.””
I covered my mouth.
Daniel stared at the floor.
“You need to know something else, Sophie.””
The recording crackled slightly.
“The accident that killed me happened the night I was preparing to expose a transfer of ownership.””
My heart stopped.
“The transfer involved Halston.””
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“And it involved Daniel.””
Daniel stood suddenly.
“Turn it off.””
Nobody moved.
“Sophie, turn it off.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
His voice became desperate.
“You don’t understand.””
“You’re right.””
I held his gaze.
“I don’t.””
My father’s voice continued.
“I don’t know who will be listening to this. I don’t know if Daniel will still be beside you.””
A pause.
“But if he is…”
The recording stopped briefly.
Then:
“Daniel, if Sophie is hearing this because of you, then you already know what you did.””
Daniel’s face changed.
My father was speaking directly to him.
“I gave you trust.””
The room felt unbearable.
“I gave you responsibility.””
Another pause.
“And you chose yourself.””
Daniel looked like he had been punched.
My father continued.
“I hope I am wrong. I hope you made mistakes and corrected them. But if you did not…”
The recording ended.
Just like that.
No final goodbye.
No explanation.
Only silence.
I stared at the device.
“That’s it?””
Victoria nodded.
“That’s the last recording.””
I turned to Daniel.
“What did you do?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“What did you do?””
His eyes lifted.
“I made a mistake.””
I almost laughed.
“A mistake?””
“Yes.””
“You forged my signature.””
“Yes.””
“You hid my inheritance.””
“Yes.””
“You built a second family.””
His face tightened.
“Sophie—”
“Was that a mistake too?””
He had no answer.
I looked at Victoria.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel immediately turned.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“No?””
“You can’t trust her.””
Victoria gave a bitter smile.
“Interesting.””
Daniel ignored her.
“Sophie, Victoria has her own agenda.””
“Maybe.””
I looked at Victoria.
“But at least she’s telling me there is an agenda.””
Daniel flinched.
Because he knew.
That was the difference.
Victoria wasn’t pretending.
She wasn’t asking me to trust her blindly.
She was showing me evidence.
Daniel had spent years asking me to trust him while hiding everything.
Victoria reached into her bag.
She pulled out a folder.
“I worked for Halston for seven years.””
She placed it on the table.
“I was the director of financial compliance.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You stole company documents.””
“No.””
Victoria looked at him.
“I copied evidence before you could erase it.””
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
She opened the folder.
Inside were printed emails.
Financial transfers.
Internal reports.
My name appeared again and again.
My stomach turned.
“What is this?””
Victoria looked at me.
“Your father created a trust.””
“For me?””
“Yes.””
“And Daniel?””
“He was appointed temporary administrator.””
Temporary.
That word stood out.
“Temporary?””
Victoria nodded.
“Only until you were ready to take control.””
I looked at Daniel.
“How long?””
He didn’t answer.
“How long was he supposed to manage it?””
Victoria did.
“Six months.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Six months?””
She nodded.
“He was supposed to transfer control to you after that.””
I looked at Daniel.
“How long has it been?””
His silence was enough.
Victoria answered.
“Six years.””
The number felt impossible.
Six years.
He had never planned to give it back.
He had turned temporary control into permanent power.
I walked toward Daniel.
“You stole my life.””
His eyes filled slightly.
“Sophie…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t just lie to me.””
I pointed toward the documents.
“You built your entire world on something that belonged to me.””
“I was protecting the company.””
“No.””
My voice became cold.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Daniel looked broken.
But I couldn’t let that change what happened.
Because broken people can still break others.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from an unknown number.
I opened it.
A photograph appeared.
A document.
A signature.
Daniel’s signature.
And beside it:
*Authorization of Transfer of Carter Family Holdings.*
Date:
Three months before Noah was born.
I looked closer.
Then I saw the name of the person who received the transfer.
Not Rachel.
Not Daniel.
Someone else.
Someone I recognized.
My blood turned cold.
Because the recipient wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone who had been standing beside Daniel the entire time.
Someone I trusted.
Someone who knew my father.
Someone who had attended my wedding.
At the bottom of the document was a single line:
*Approved by: Elizabeth Carter.*
Daniel’s mother.
I looked up slowly.
“Your mother?””
Daniel went completely still.
And for the first time that night, he looked more afraid of someone else than he was of me.
May you like
Because whatever Elizabeth Carter had done…
Daniel knew I was about to discover why he had never wanted me looking into my own inheritance.
